Cappella Nova

Founded in 1982 by Alan and Rebecca Tavener with the aim of bringing professional performances of unaccompanied choral music to Scottish audiences, Cappella Nova quickly established itself as the leading a cappella vocal ensemble specialising in early and contemporary music in the northern half of Great Britain. It is Scotland's only professional a cappella ensemble and best known for performing the rich corpus of early Scottish polyphony and plainchant, as well as for commissioning and premiering new works from living composers. Cappella Nova works closely with Dr. Kenneth Elliott of the University of Glasgow whose pioneering work on early Scottish repertoire, and in particular the music of Robert Carver, has brought to light a significant aspect of Scotland's cultural heritage and resulted in the availability of scholarly performing editions. In recognition of its pioneering work in restoring the renaissance Scottish composer, Robert Carver, to his rightful eminence, Cappella Nova has received one of the Glenfiddich Living Scotland Awards for 1990. Cappella Nova has appeared throughout the UK and is increasingly in demand for tours abroad, having most recently visited Germany and Russia. The group has made numerous contributions to BBC and Independent radio and television, and has made recordings for Bayerische Rundfunk that have been broadcast widely in Europe.

"Cappella Nova is Scotland's premier vocal ensemble. Its focus, commitment and virtuosic a cappella singing would make it premier just about anywhere" - The Boston Globe

The seventh recording from Cappella Nova, this disc of Scottish Medieval plainsong celebrates Glasgow's 6th-century patron saint, Kentigern (or Mungo), in wonderful music and poetry from the 13th-century Sprouston Breviary. This material was clearly centuries old before the monks wrote it down in the 1200s, and it is full of Celtic romance and colour. The most important part is the sequence of nine lectiones which relate to the miracles of St Kentigern. Cappella Nova has used singers, bells and clàrsach (Celtic harp) to weave a magical tapestry of sound for the telling of these, literally, fabulous tales.
