Whiffenpoofs : Whiffs in Space!

Review: As one of the nation's oldest and most acclaimed collegiate a cappella groups the Whiffenpoofs have, during their 99 years of existence, sung all over the world. With their 100 year anniversary approaching the group decided that was not quite enough so now "The Whiffs" have taken off to explore the universe where "in space nobody can hear you sing". This recording reflects their long tradition by performing a selection of more traditional male glee club type songs along with a very healthy mix of contemporary a cappella songs. With such a long and proud tradition the Whiffenpoofs have always been one of the creams of the crop and this year's group more than hold their own on this fine recording. An added bonus is the printed insert which turns into a cool poster.

Songlist: Aj Lucka Lucka, Little Pony, New Hymn, On Broadway, Something Like The Blues, Steppin' Out With My Baby, Stay, Waiting in Vain, Sweet Baby James, Time After Time, Bye Bye Blackbird, Down By The Sally Gardens, Who Loves The Sun, Deep River, Midnight Train To Georgia, The Whiffenpoof Song

Wibijazz'n : In The Pocket

Review: Wibijazz'n is a 17-strong, mixed, student-run contemporary a cappella ensemble based in Winters College, York University, Toronto. Since 1988 the members have been solemnly dedicated to the proliferation of the Groove, and to having unreasonable amounts of fun in the process! "In the Pocket" has 16 songs, including the 7-song medley, "WIBI FM (Take 2), which represent the group's favorites from the past 5 years: "Automatic," "Change the World," the marvelous "We Belong," "5 Reasons Why," an ethereal cover of "Come Back to Me," a bouncy, tongue-in-cheek "Sesame Street" and "Pinball Number Count," a dramatic cover of Sting's "Fortress Around Your Heart," great vocal percussion on "Rosanna" and Peter Gabriel's classic "In Your Eyes," and finishing with the brilliant, 9-minute medley, WIBI FM. A sumptuous, delicious CD by one of the best collegiate groups we've heard! Recommended. Our favorite: Sting's "Fortress Around Your Heart"

Songlist: WIBI FM, Automatic, Change The World, We Belong, Reasons Why, Wibijazz'n' Stroke, What A Girl Wants, Come Back To Me, Sesame Street, Pinball Number Count, Fortress Around Your Heart, Tully Jig, Beyond The Limit, Rosanna, In Your Eyes, WIBI FM (take 2)

Yale Red, Hot & Blue : Yeah... You Heard Me

Review: Founded in 1977, Redhot and Blue is Yale's oldest coed a cappella group. The youthful 18-voice group has dazzled audiences from the White House to the embassies of Prague, onboard the QE II and onstage at Carnegie Hall. Fresh twists on jazz classics, Broadway showstoppers, and toe-tapping favorites of all genres fuel their entertaining and passionate performances. Sophisticated jazz standards and Broadway showtunes form the core of Redhot's repertoire, though they also sing a variety of more contemporary hits. Recipients of many CARA awards, "Yeah..." is the group's 5th CD. 19 songs, some favorites: the classic "42nd Street," Gershwin's "A Foggy Day" and "Summertime," "Fever," Mel Brooks' "When You've Got It, Flaunt It," "Scotch and Soda," Laura Nyro's "Sweet Blindness," Cole Porter's "Red, Hot and Blue," and "A Man Come Into Egypt," from the group's 25th Anniversary concert. All arrangements are by Rh&B alumni. Good stuff, spirited and energetic collegiate a cappella!

Songlist: Swingende Koormuziek 42nd Street, A Foggy Day (In London Town), I Can't get Started, Fever, Almost Like Being In Love, Ev'ry Time We Say Goodbye, When You've Got It, Flaunt It, Scotch and Soda, Summertime, I Get A Kick Out of You, Red, Hot and Blue, God Bless the Child, Loverman, Sweet Blindness, All the Things You Are, Second Hand Rose, Night In Tunisia, A Man Come Into Egypt, When You Are Old

Mickey Rapkin : Pitch Perfect - The Quest For Collegiate A Cappella Glory

Review: In Pitch Perfect, GQ editor Mickey Rapkin follows a season in collegiate a cappella through all its twists and turns, covering the displays of vocal talent, the groupies (yes, a cappella singers have groupies), the rockstar partying (and run-ins with the law), and all the bitter rivalries. Along the way are encounters with boldfaced names such as President George W. Bush, Prince, David Letterman, Barack Obama, Barbra Streisand, Hillary Clinton, Marisa Tomei, Amanda Bynes, Nick Lachey, Merv Griffin, Jim Carrey, Microsoftas Paul Allen, John Legend, and Jessica Biel. At the heart of the narrative are three a cappella groups whose interactions are anything but harmonious: the historic Tufts Beelzebubs, founded more than forty years ago with 40,000 albums sold since and struggling to record a new album that lives up to the hype; Divisi of the University of Oregon, a relatively new, all-female group attempting to overcome a loss in the 2005 championship; and the University of Virginia Hullabahoos, the so-called bad boys of collegiate a cappella, who will attempt to compete on a higher level this year while retaining their casual soul. Bringing a lively new twist to Americaas fascination with talent showdowns and peerless performers, Pitch Perfect is sure to strike a chord with readers.

Songlist: Divisi Gets Snubbed, The Belzebubs Face Crisis, Meet The Hullabahoos, Divisi Struggles With More Than Music, The Explosion of Collegiate A Cappella, The Hullabahoos Origin, The Belzebubs And The Hullabahoos Collide, Divisi Gets A Lesson, The Beelzebubs Record, The Hullabahoos Go To LA, Divisi and the ICCA Ladies, "Feuding", The Beelzebubs' Spring Break, The Hullabahoos' Laziness Bites Back, ICCA goes International, Divisi Spring 2007, The Beelzebubs Release Pandaemonium, Hullabahoos Spring 2007, Epilogue, Acknowledgments

Ben Folds : University A Cappella

Review: The talented and creative singer-songwriter Ben Folds became enamored of collegiate a cappella after hearing some of the groups on YouTube. On this release he recorded some of his favorite campus a cappella groups as they each perform one of his songs and the result is a delight. The Spartones open the disc with a stella arrangement of "Not the Same" with the Leading Tones of Ohio University giving a solid rendition of "Brick". Ben Folds himself sings a cappella (with multi tracking) on "Boxing" and the fun "Effington". Mosaic Whispers sings "Still Fighting It" with conviction while the more jazz arrangement of "Selfless, Cold and Composed" helps show why Ben Folds songs are so much fun to arrange and perform unaccompanied. The University of Chicago's Voices in Your Head perform a very interesting arrangement of "Magic" and the Newtones soothing treatment of "Evaporate" surprises. Fifth Element is remarkable performing "Fair" and the closing "The Luckiest" wraps up the recording perfectly. This release certainly shows how talented today's collegiate a cappella groups have become and although a few individual voices may not always be pitch perfect the arrangements are almost all top notch and impressive. Recommended.

Songlist: Not the Same, Jesusland, Brick, You Don't Know Me, Still Fighting It, Boxing, Selfless, Cold and Composed, Magic, Landed, Time, Effington, Evaporated, Fred Jones Part 2, Army, Fair, The Luckiest
