The women may not have been singing barbershop as long as the men, but they've definitely made the art form their own. They push the limits, they ring the chords, they deliver tags that hang in the air so long you'd think they've grown wings. Barbershop may have its roots in American music, but there are terrific Sweet Adelines quartets and choruses all over the world, and we carry many of their albums. If you haven't discovered women's barbershop yet, what are you waiting for?
| Generic Uptempo Barbershop Song Somethin' About Ya Here's That Rainy Day Why Haven't I Heard from You? These Foolish Things That Song Is Driving Me Crazy Something's Gotta Give Red River Valley Can You Feel the Love Tonight Sermonette Row, Row, Rosie Harmony |
Nashville's 2000 Sweet Adelines Convention saw appropriately-named A Cappella Gold named Queens of Harmony, and since then they've released "As Good As Gold," "Pure Gold" and now "Harmony Gone Wild" to prove how right the judges were! Included here are 13 songs, from beautifully-arranged old favorites like "Here's That Rainy Day," "These Foolish Things," "Glow Worm," "Something's Gotta Give," "Red River Valley" and "Row, Row, Rosie," to new songs we haven't heard like "Somethin' About Ya," "Why Haven't I Heard From You" and the funny live cut "Generic Uptempo Barbershop Song." Elton John's "Can You Feel The Love Tonight" is beautifully sung and arranged, as is the surprising jazz tune made famous by Lambert, Hendricks & Ross, "Sermonette." The gals finish strong with a ringing Limelighters tune, "Harmony." Smiling on the cover dressed in Zebra-stripe overkill, ACG is not shy, and can belt, ring chords and harmonize with the best of them and have big fun doing it!

Hail to the Queens! We're not talking frankincense or myrhh here, folks, we are talking As Good As Gold. Acappella Gold, The International Champions of 2000, are Tenor Bette Gorton, Lead Kim Hulbert, Baritone Tomi McEvoy, and Bass Susan Lamb. A wonderful selection of songs and four incredibly solid voices to sing them makes this one great cd, though how could you go wrong with Royalty! As Good As Gold features 13 songs that stimulate all the senses. The ladies will especially love "Renaissance Woman" and "Chocolate Is Love" while the gents won't be able to resist "Make Love To Me" and "One Size Fits All". We feel honored to be adding this gem, or shall we say precious metal, to our catalog. Songlist Listen to "Chocolate is Love" in Real Audio.

| Excerpts form Rhapsody in Blue Love Is Here to Stay When Will I Be Loved Gospel Medley Friends Everything Old Is New Again Keepin' Out of Mischief Now Let's Sing Again Pal Of My Cradle Days Something's Coming The Minute Waltz Canticle of the Sun Ave Maria |
Ambiance's best-known and most requested arrangement, "Rhapsody In Blue," is the CD's opener ("rhapsody" denotes an epic work in one movement). With words by David Wright, also the CD's musical coordinator, the track begins with a siren call, beckoning all to gather round. What follows is a rendition of Gershwin's classic, unlike anything heard before: symphonic in scope, a virtual vocal orchestration of relentless intensity and chutzpah. Barbershop chords and vertical harmony dominate, but the character of what may be Gershwin's greatest instrumental work is maintained. After such an introduction, one might be speechless, but not Ambiance. They follow with another Gershwin composition, finished by George's brother and lyricist Ira after George's death: "Our Love Is Here To Stay." The mood is sweetly somber, sliding gently from voicing to voicing, sometimes in unison, sometimes with solo embellishments. It's subtle, stylistically completely different from the track preceeding it. Changing the mood again, the Everly Bros. "When Will I Be Loved," has a doo-woppy flavor, the bass asserting itself with brisk authority. This diversity and willingness to try anything continues through Chopin's "Minute Waltz," Fats Waller's "Keepin' Out of Mischief Now" and Francis of Assisi's "Canticle of the Sun," concluding with a piano-accompanied "Ave Maria." It's a thrilling ride!

"Ain't Misbehavin'" was recorded in 1986, just after Ambiance won the Sweet Adelines championship, and features many of arrangements that were part of their repertoire at that time. Vintage material, including several Fats Waller compositions from the era of jump and stride, dominate, recognizing the stylistic contributions of jazz and blues to barbershop. Whether the old-fashioned sentimentality of "No One Loves You Better Than Your M-A-DOUBLE M-Y," "I Never Knew - I Could Love Anyone Like I'm Loving You" and "Handful of Keys" - sung with lightening bolt energy - or the slower ballads, "I've Got A Feeling I'm Falling," and "All By Myself," which are conjugated with laserlike focus, Ambiance combines passion with incredible chops. Their last recording. The Ambiance sound, which must be credited to David Wright, their musical coordinator and arranger, as well as the group themselves, is fully developed. The interpretation of their material is as important a component as the songs themselves, and their expert showmanship is evident, translating effectively even on CD. This a quartet of high-wire walkers, and songs such as "Why Do Fools Fall In Love" and its opposite, "Steal Away," show their versatility and fearlessness. "Love Of My Life," popularized by the rock group Queen, is a modern aria, requiring maximum range and control. Sondheim's "More" and Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata" (with lyrics by David Wright), are accompanied by percussion and piano, respectively. Songlist Listen to "Love Eyes Medley" in Real Audio.

Billing themselves as "800 pounds of harmony," Chillicothe, Illinois'
Big Four became Sweet Adelines Quartette Champs in 1953. Fine singers
and entertainers, they appeared on tv with Jack Paar, Steve Allen, Arthur
Godfrey and Dave Garraway of the "Today Show" to name just a few. This
CD is a remastered album they recorded in 1958, plus several cuts gleaned
from live shows. The Big Four are Bertha Bradley, bass, Sarah LeMaster,
baritone, Inez "Junior" Thompson, lead, and Lucille Miller and Mary Waters
sharing the tenor duties. There are 14 studio recordings and 7 electrifying
live performances here. By the pound or by any other measure, this is

Spirited, fun Sweet Adelines quartet Brava!, formed in 1989 in Vancouver, BC, almost immediately became the highest-ranking Canadian quartet ever, placing in the top 10 at International 6 times, grabbing Silver in Portland, Oregon in 2001, and finally winning the coveted Gold in Phoenix in September of 2003. Since then Sandy, Lynn, Elaine and Shannon have been having big fun in concert and recording this excellent studio album (Made in Canada), "Tickled Pink," also an apt description of their feelings about singing together. This vibrant, talented foursome brings us 12 songs, some belters like "All Aboard For Dixieland," "Fly Me to the Moon/East of the Sun" and "Toot, Toot, Tootsie;" and some romantic heart-tuggers like "I Will Love You 'Til the End of Time," "La Vie en Rose," "Sweet Adeline" and "I've Got You Under My Skin." There's some rampant silliness on two Weird Al Yankovic covers, "You Don't Want Me Anymore" and "One More Minute" (called "One More Contest" here), both songs with very funny parody lyrics about group annoyances and getting dumped. We particularly liked the classics, "Without A Song," arranged by our good friend Kirby Shaw, and Billy Joel's timeless "And So It Goes." Well-chosen, beautifully performed stuff by Canada's, and now Sweet Adelines', finest!

As quite possibly the most highly regarded Sweet Adeline quartet performing today we had high expectations for this new release and are pleased to report that the CD perhaps even surpasses those hopes. This is a very talented quartet of singers who has chosen a most eclectic and interesting repertoire for this recording. They are also singing the arrangements of a veritable who's who of the great barbershop arrangers including Latzko, Wright, Briner, Waeche, Clancy and Rene Craig. Barbershop gurus Joe Connelly and Tony DeRosa also helped with the recording adding further to the feel of barbershop royalty and to the impeccable sound of the CD. This Buzzapalooza has plenty of razzmatazz and is highly recommended to all fans of barbershop singing.

The Buzz are a Sweet Adeline supergroup! Comprised of Nancy Fuhrman and bass Jeannie Froelich from City Lights along with baritone Karen Breidert of Jubilation and lead Debbie Connelly of Showtime they were crowned again in Indianapolis as the 2004 International Quartet Champions! These four former Queens of Harmony have come together to create a powerhouse of sound. Their debut CD "Have You Heard" includes "You Turned the Tables on Me" and "No, No, Norman," two of the songs that led them to victory; as well as a "Goodbye Medley" arranged by Tom Gentry with "Bye, Bye Blackbird," "So Long Dearie," "Toot, Toot Tootsie," and "Goodnight Ladies." These four talented women began their musical journey in September of 1994. By their 10th anniversary they had earned 4 Regional Championships and competed six times in the Sweet Adelines International Quartet Contest, placing as high as 24th. "Keepin'" is the group's debut album, 14 spirited, personalized takes on chestnuts like "Blue Skies," "Lazy River," "Don't Break the Heart that Loves You," "It's a Good Day," "Two Tickets to Georgia" medley, "Miss Celie's Blues," "Lullabye of Birdland," "You Must Have Been A Beautiful Baby," "Your Make Me Feel So Young" and the final cut, "That's How You Jazz." An impressive debut, and some very nice Sweet Adelines harmonies and ringing chords from Chord Company.

The star-spangled "City Lights," from the Garden State, 1992 Sweet Adelines International Champions, have returned with their third CD. Whether it's a plaintive ballad, such as "Little Girl Blue," originally done by the 1957 champion Cracker Jills, and arranged by the legendary Renee Craig, or Gershwin's "Someone To Watch Over Me," the sassy "Hit That Jive, Jack," with it's horn fills and athletic bass line (arranged by Greg Volk), or even City Lights' version of the Aretha classic, "Respect," each song is approached with the same concentration of musicality, originality and elegance.

Classic fare from the Sweet Adelines' Queens of Harmony, who wear their crown with assurance on this album. "The Way He Makes Me Feel" is a tour de force, a clear shimmering vocal with just the right amount of vibrato, poignantly rendered. "Hit Me With a Hot Note" is a belter, all sizzle. These ladies understand that less is more, and don't clutter their arrangements with unnecessary embellishments; the overall effect is tight and powerful. "Something Hot" is a wise selection for those stalwart Sweet Adelines aficionados and those who are new to the genre. Songlist Listen to Sing Me a Song About Ireland in Real Audio

The Cracker Jills were superstars! There, we've said it.
There have been a few others in the Sweet Adelines of similar stature
but since they won the Sweet Adeline International Championship in 1957
(now the winners are called Queens of Harmony) and went on to sing together
for another twenty years they have been considered the most influential
group in defining the world of women in barbershop singing. Most prominent
in this influence is their arranger and lead singer, Renee Craig whose
name you will see in the arranger's credits on almost every Sweet Adeline
album. She has also been the director of the Ramapo Valley Sweet Adeline
Chorus which won four Championships and now is the director of the Westchester
Chordsmen. But, you ask, how about the music? Here are historic recordings
of 26 of the best tunes you'll ever hear!

To say that Chris DeRosa, Tabby Miller, Milissa Carmack and Susie Bonds are Crystal Clear would be an understatement! These ladies can flat out sing a Sweet Adelines tune and bend, stretch, blend or belt a barbershop note with the best of them. The element often missing in Sweet Adelines groups, powerful bass, is here, and especially evident on "Our God, He Is Alive," performed with Showtime & Legacy. Great arrangements of classic tunes, most by the mysterious "Volk," create a wonderful structure for Crystal Clear to let their voices soar. "Ain't Misbehavin', "Chances Are," "Original Dixieland Love Song," "Just Another Song About Love," "Orange Colored Sky," our personal favorite, "I'm Gonna Live 'Til I Die," "For the Sake of Old Lang Syne," "You're Nobody 'Til Somebody Loves You," the moody "Misty," sung with Riptide-15 songs, all excellent. This is Crystal Clear's, and our, "Lucky Day!" Songlist

Third in 2005, second in 2006 surely this fabulous quartet are the next heirs apparent to the Queens of Harmony crowns. And how worthy they surely are is clearly demonstrated on this fine recording as the ladies are in top form as they sing some classic barbershop songs along with some vintage jazz gems. Made up of members of the Melodeers and the Choral-Aires Sweet Adeline choruses the quartet members Lynda, Joan, Heather and Cori fine individual voices blend in great harmony with a spirit that shows why we love female barbershop singing so much. Officially, 4 Star Collection registered their quartethood with Sweet Adelines International in 1987. In 1988 and again in 1989 they won their regional competitions. Since then they were 10th in the Internationals in 1989, 5th in '90, 8th in '91, 2nd in '92, 5th in '93, 3rd in '94, 2nd in '95 and in l996 swept the field of 47 other quartets to become the 1997 Queens Of Harmony. Their winning performance that magic evening was "(When It's) Darkness On The Delta," "I'd Give The World To Hear Alexander's Band Again," "Here I Am, Broken Hearted" and, just for yucks, Weird Al's parody of "La Bamba" entitled "Lasagna." As their chords rang out into the hall holding 7,000 enthusiasts, the judges awarded the maximum number of discretionary bonus points possible. Now you can enjoy the same winning perfection that swept the judges and audience that evening. Songlist

Longtime Sweet Adelines fans, new fans and fans-to-be, are in for a treat here. 5-time Gold Medal Champs The Gem City Chorus has compiled this wonderful collection of songs from their cds Double Exposure (1975), Reflections (1981), and Gem City Live! (1991), under Master Director Jean Barford. Seeing them perform live must be amazing, because itÕs clear from listening to this cd that these women really let it all hang out musically! Some of our favorites are Blues In The Night, Swing Down Chariot, Get Happy, My Man, If I Were a Rich Man, Second Hand Man, and Try A Little Kindness. ItÕs hard to pick, because the quality and feeling of all the songs is so consistently high. Great stuff from a hard-working, talented group!

Gem City won the Sweet Adelines Internationals in the Chorus Category
an unprecedented five times! How did they do it? Great material, enthusiastically
performed and dynamically arranged! Makes it sound simple, doesn't it?
Directed by Jean Barford, this Dayton Ohio aggregate's sound is as unified
as can be, its articulation crisp, timing right on the money. "As Time
Goes By" is swung a little faster than average, "How's Every Little Thing
In Dixie" exaggerates the phrasing effectively, hurrying through the tune
like the March Hare. Other great songs: "Mississippi Medley," "The Joint
Is Jumpin'," and "It Don't Mean A Thing If It Ain't Got That Swing Medley."

The Growing Girls, 1989 Queens of Harmony, are from Ronninge, Sweden. First competing in International in 1988, where they placed sixth, they bounced into the top spot the following year! This 1999 release (though the songs were recorded in 1991 and 1995), takes a swipe at the pop oldies chart with Abba's "Dancing Queen," and the Beatles "With A Little Help From My Friends." Two arrangements are in their native tongue, with the balance divided between SAI stalwarts such as "Birth Of The Blues" and "That Old Quartet Of Mine," and standards such as an Andrew Sisters medley. Their blend is polished and warm, and their delivery is natural and unfazed. "Undecided" is a particularly engaging arrangement with all the "bells and whistles"! Songlist

The popularity of these four charming Swedish ladies remains unabated, though it's been over a decade since they won the Sweet Adelines crown. "All Grown Up" opens with a snippet from their first rehearsal, in 1979, when the four first began singing together. They were girls then, as the picture on the CD will prove, and that auspicious occasion led to a lifetime engagement! The interpretive skills, range and timbre that characterize their sound are partly learned, but also due in part to lucky happenstance - the kind that occurs when four voices complement each other, resulting in a lusciously full representation of the audio palette! This rainbow is at its most dazzling on "The Man I Love," "Deed I Do" and "Where Is Love," combining talent with arrangements tailor-made to show it at its best. Songlist

When "Ladies First" was founded in 1991, they didn't know that their name would also become a testimony of our success. Since the first German Barbershop Competition in 1992, Ladies First has taken first place every time. They won three provincial choral competitions and were the first German Chorus to qualify and be invited to the Sweet Adelines Internationals in Atlanta in 1999. Their director, experienced German "Barbershopper" Manfred Adams, brings the best out of his "Ladies," whether it be in music, choreography or simply entertainment. "1st" is all sung in English, and is an impressive, finely-crafted tour-de-force of a CD. The powerful harmonies, the innovative arrangements and the sheer, infectious spirit of these four women show why they have won so many awards in the growing European Barbershop movement. 15 cuts, "This is Some Lucky Day," "Original Dixieland One Step," "Stars Fell on Alabama," "It Don't Mean A Thing," an amazing arranged "Drunken Sailor," a "Good Old Acappella" that warms our hearts, a smoky "Hit Me With A Hot Note," a randy "Gimme, Gimme, Gimme," Elvis' "Love Me Tender," and a swinging "Royal Garden Blues" are favorites. Sweet Adelines has taken strong root in Europe, and Ladies First has the kind of sound and pizzazz that we have only seen from groups wearing International medals and posing in front of large trophies-give 'em a listen!

The current Sweet Adelines Chorus Champions, the Melodeers, directed
by Jim Arns, have crafted a proficient recording of Sweet Adelines classics,
standards and even the "Hallelujah Chorus." "The Auctioneer's
Song" is a lively and comic tongue-twister; the understated introduction
of "I Remember You" soon gives way to a brisk swing feel, while
"Orange Colored Sky" practically gallops to the finish line.
"Mamma Goes Where Papa Goes" features dramatic pitch deceleration
in its opening verse-an attention-getting device used effectively here.
The racuous "Blues Bros. Medley" (recorded live, as were several
of the tracks) red-lines it throughout-The Melodeers have energy to spare
and constitutions that thrive on very little oxygen! "Mission Accomplished"
indeed!

Since their formation in 1960, the Melodeers, a 125-member Sweet Adelines Chorus, have won the International Championship twice in succession (1997, 1998). Their energetic and vivacious style must also be credited to their redoubtable director, Jim Arns, who also wrote some of the arrangements. "Do You Hear What I Hear?" offers every imaginable variation (echo, contrast motion, swipes, modulation) of the familiar refrain, and sets up the grand finale with a turnaround, pushing the phrasing to make room for a zestful seventh chord and another key change. "Psalm 98/Shalom" begins on a long open note, gradually converging to the dominant; the subsequent section is a rapid fire allegro, broken by a repetitive adagio two-part interlude. Sound unconventional? It is. "Silent Night," "The Christmas Song" and "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" are among the many traditionals. The Chorus lets loose on "Jingle Bell Rock" and "Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer." Songlist Listen to "The Christmas Song" in Real Audio

The Bad News is, the former Sweet Adelines Queens of Harmony, the four lovely, talented women of Panache, have disbanded and are no longer singing together as a group. The Good News is, they left us this wonderful 2-CD set to remember them by! We won't go into the individual titles, but suffice to say that there's a "whole bunch" of our favorites on these two CDs, including selections from discontinued Panache titles. These are the songs that took them to Sweet Adelines Gold, and that made them one of our best selling Barbershop titles. These four beloved entertainers are leaving exactly the way they came into our lives-with Panache. Enjoy! Songlist

The Pride of Baltimore Chorus was organized in February of 1993. Winning numerous regional awards since 1995, the chorus won 6th place in 1999 at the 2000 Sweet Adelines International Competition in Atlanta, Georgia. In October 2001, the chorus proudly placed 3rd at the 2002 International Competition in Portland, Oregon. And recently they were named 2004 2nd Place International Finalists! Under the talented leadership of Master Director Janet Ashford, the chorus has grown to about 80 voices. 14 spirited songs, from "Chordbuster's March," "My Honey's Lovin' Arms" and "(Here Am I) Brokenhearted," to Phil Collins' "Trashin' The Camp (with Chorus-supplied percussion)," "Big Bad Bill (Is Sweet William Now)," "Opus One," Lennon and McCartney's "In My Life" and "It's A Good Day" --The energy level, and breathtaking chords, stay high throughout. The RVC, directed by Renee Craig, is actually located 45 minutes from Broadway, and no wonder they're so influenced by its music! The heart of their repertoire comes from shows that have graced Broadway stages over the years. One of the top choruses in Sweet Adelines International competitions, RMC delivers. 14 beautifully arranged favorites, songs like: "45 Minutes From Broadway," "Broadway Rhythm/42nd Street," "There's Gotta Be Something Better Than This," "Our Love is Here to Stay," 5 selections from "The Lion King," and "Barbershopping," all joyfully and dynamically sung by a top-notch chorus--who could ask for more? New York City's Sweet Adelines favorite Ramapo Valley Spotlight Chorus, who tell us they're based only 45 minutes from Broadway, bring that Broadway magic and panache to an ambitious, energetic Christmas CD. First we have "Happy Holidays/Winter Wonderland," "Deck the Halls/Hark the Herald Angels Sing," "Toyland," "God Rest Ye, Merry Gentlemen," "Jingle Bell Rock," "I Wonder As I Wander," "Angels We Have Heard On High," "Christmas Was Meant For Children" and "Hanukkah." Then comes "A Child Is Born" and a dramatic and touching Christmas narrative/medley, narrated by Renee Craig, "A Gift of Love." Included are "Gloria," "A Child Is Born in Bethlehem," "Rise Up Shepherd and Follow," "A Baby In A Cradle" and five others. There is some light flute, guitar and piano accompaniment on some songs. This CD might have been titled "Christmas on Broadway" ... we like the spirit of RVSC, and we enjoyed "A Gift of Love!" Songlist Listen to "I'll Be Home For Christmas" in Real Audio

A product of Sweet Adelines' reaching out to young women singers, Sacramento, CA-based Razzcals first began singing together in 1995, in their teens and early 20s. In Sweet Adelines international competition they immediately began making their mark, placing 21st, 15th, 7th, 4th (four times in a row), 2nd and 4th. "Now Appearing," the group's second, is a polished, entertaining collection of 12 songs: "When the Midnight Choo-Choo Leaves for Alabam'," "Keepin' Out of Mischief Now," "You're Nobody Till Somebody Loves You," "Come Rain or Come Shine," "Shangri La," "Love Medley," "Jenny Rebecca," "There Goes My Heart," "The Boy From Ipanema" and the saucy "Hey, Good Lookin'" are particular favorites. Although they have yet to win the #1 ranking, Razzcals are focused and determined, and we fully expect to wake up the morning after the Finals to the four Razzcalls wearing that beautiful Sweet Adelines International Quartet Gold around their necks!

From the land of harmony singing here is another top-notch vocal quartet from Sweden. Remix is one of the world's top Sweet Adeline quartets who have placed in the top 5 in the International contest for the past several years. With 2 winners in recent years Sweden has become a leading practitioner of Sweet Adeline singing of which ReMix is most certainly a fine example. Each of the singers have great voices which harmonize very well and they perform some interesting arrangements including many by Stefan Paulson. This is a fine recording that will please the most discerning of Sweet Adeline fans.

Quite possible the best women's barbershop chorus ever and winner of four Gold medals this is another fine recording from this wonderful group. Some of the great American standards such as "Sweet Georgia Brown" and "God Bless the USA" get the Dale Syverson treatment as well as the fabulous "The Rose" and the touching "I'm Alone Because I Love You" A must have for fans of the ladies barbershop sound.

Featuring arrangements of some of the great barbershop arrangers including Brian Beck, Ed Waesche and David Wright this is a wonderful recording by the multiple-award winning Sweet Adeline chorus. Texas sure knows how to produce great barbershop choruses with both the Rich-Tones and the incredible Vocal Majority hailing from Dallas and this recording is sure to please fans of barbershop chorus harmony.

The CD opens by announcing, "it's Saturday night in New
York City, at the world famous Rainbow Room." It's actually recorded in
Texas, but the mood is set for this program of songs, featuring the award-winning
women's chorus from Dallas, the Rich-Tones, as well as the saxophone quartet
Opus Four, and a 3 piece combo fronted by Brian Beck on bass guitar. That
said, this CD is a smorgasbord of styles, from Dixieland ("That's A Plenty,"
and "Back Home Again In Indiana," Opus IV) to Tracy Chapman's "Give Me
One Good Reason," featuring a solo vocal, guitar, plus the trio. The common
element is entertainment with elegance. Soloist Pam Lauffer expresses
it best on "Corner of Heaven," a languid pour of retro come yonder. Practically
all accompanied and a lot of fun.

The four talented women of Rumors had been singing together for five years when they were named 1999 International Sweet Adelines Quartet Champions. Since then Charla, Judy, Dale and Peggy have honed and perfected their audience-pleasing a cappella style, and sublime arrangements by premier arranger Anna-Maria Nystrom have added a new dimension to their recordings and live performances. "Something," the group's 4th excellent CD has 12 songs, some favorites are: the Motown classic "Ain't No Sunshine," "Aubrey" (featuring soloist Steve DeCrow), "When She Loved Me" from Toy Story 2, "God Only Knows," Carole King's "I Feel The Earth Move," Sting's marvelous hit "Fields of Gold," the title tune and Harold Arlen and CY Harburg's "Over the Rainbow." Rumors burst onto the scene in 1997, stealing the show at the Sweet Adelines International Competition. Many in the audience thought they had won, until it was discovered they had gone over their time limit by 18 seconds-just enough to bump them from first place. The next year, conspicuously wearing watches, Rumors was crowned the Best Quartet in the World, 1999 International Champions. The phenomenon that is Rumors has given us two excellent CDs before "Caught," 1997's "Confirmed" and 1999's "Rumors are Flying!" all performed with their trademark class, style and humor. Twelve songs: "It's Sandman" recalls the Andrews Sisters in their prime, a smooth and sweet "When I Fall In Love," "This Masquerade," a toe-tapping "All Bound Round," the lovely "Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again," the hilarious "Pretty Little Dolly" (who can do much more than just talk), "Back In The Old Routine," "Ability To Swing," "I Know Him So Well (from "Chess"), You'll Never Know, John Fogerty's "Proud Mary" and a helping of consummate comedienne Dale Syverson's humor, "Cats." The audience is alternately in applause, awe and stitches as the Best Quartet in the World blows them, and us, away. Marvelous! Songlist

The true details about Rumors are highly classified information,
but is is rumored that...They have performed together since the beginning
of Sweet Adelines. They have competed among the best in the world. They
live in different states but fly to practice together every other night.
Their appearances include: America's Funniest Home Videos, David Letterman,
Oprah, Phil Donahue and Rikki Lake. And then, just what is their current
association with The Rich-Tones? Not a rumor, however, is the Championship
singing that you will hear on this recording. After a doff of their crowns
to tradition on "Original Dixieland One Step" we are treated
to as beautiful version of "I Can Dream, Can't I" as can be
imagined. The rocking arrangement of "Jimmy, Jimmy, Jimmy!"
we've never heard before. The new and traditional alternate with beauty
and perfection. What an achievement.

This year's Sweet Adelines Champs, Rumors - Dale, Judy, Peggy and Charla - steadfastly refuse to take themselves seriously. From this refreshing and modern approach, as exemplified by the cover photo of the four on a motorcycle, (even if just barely), we hear women's barbershop for the year 2000. The first cut, "We Are Family," which is as catchy a dance single as was ever written, is definitely not a contest arrangement, but it's good fun ("Don't You Worry About A Thing" has a similar vibe). The remainder of the material consists of deft and confident versions of songs such as "I Didn't Want To Fall," "My Buddy" and "Jeepers Creepers." "The Lady Down The Hall" features a poignant solo lead by Charla Clare. Rumor's sound is exceptionally full, thanks in large part to the resonant and poweful bass of Peggy Barnes, which can be heard to good effect in "Come Take Your Place In My Heart." Nothing is finer than a Sweet Adeline chorus in full song and this new release from this champion chorus is a delight from beginning to end. One would expect something great from this chorus as they are directed by one of the biggest names in women's barbershop and this CD most certainly delivers the goods. Kim Hulbert has won the international quartet championship an unprecedented three times with A Cappella Gold, High Society and Savvy and her talents and years of experience have shaped this chorus to be a force to be reckoned with. Refreshingly many of the songs are arranged by women such as Nancy Bergman and Ann Minihane which somewhat surprisingly is rather unusual as many of the standard chorus arrangers are men. So Fine indeed!

Founded in 1951, The 160-strong San Diego Chorus is one of the largest and most dynamic chapters of Sweet Adelines International, winning International Gold in Portland in 2001 and in Seattle in 1975, with 3 Silver medals and a Bronze sandwiched in between. Dynamically directed by the creative and talented Kim Hurlbert, herself a multiple winner of S.A. quartet gold, the SDC has a record of excellence and a sound to match. Included in "Sound" are 13 wonderful, rich selections, including several medleys, some of our favorites: "Parade Medley," "You're a Grand Old Flag," "Quiet Please, There's a Lady on Stage," "Amazing Grace," "Salute to the Armed Forces," "Cohen-Broadway Medley," "My Fair Lady Medley," "Andrew Lloyd Webber Medley" and "This is the Moment." Soaring solos, rich, spirited harmonies - SDC is the best, and they aren't afraid to flaunt it!

The 148-strong (if our math is right) San Diego Chorus cooks up some classic Sweet Adelines music here, ably accompanied by 2001 International Quartet Champions a cappella Gold (on "If You Love Me, Really Love Me"), and Quartet medalists Fanatix (on "I've Got the World On A String"). These women know how to belt them out, and our emotions are wonderfully tugged in many directions. We have the rousing and foot-stomping: ("South Rampart Street Parade," "It's A Great Day for the Irish," "Alexander's Ragtime Band," and "Rockabye Your Baby With A Dixie Melody." And there's the sweet and sentimental: "I've Got the World on a String," "If You Love Me, Really Love Me, and "How Do You Keep The Music Playing." Finally we have the Gospel/Christian: "Go Tell It On The Mountain," "Sweet Hour of Prayer," and the closing Gospel Medley-"How Great Thou Art." Inspiring, uplifting, tug-on-your-heartstrings stuff, beautifully performed! Songlist

TheWhen you do something for the love of it, sometimes it just takes off on a life of its own. Four women began singing together for the love of it in 1995. They have been medalists five times in the North Atlantic Region #1of Sweet Adelines International and 1st runner up in the 1998, 1999 & 2000 Boston area Harmony Sweepstakes Competition. This year they won and advanced to the National Finals! It's a wonderful time to for them to release a recording of great quartet arrangements featuring such tunes as an "Ain't Misbehavin' Medley," "I've Got a Crush on You," "Beginning to See the Light," "Moonglow," and "Dream" among old favorites, well done quartetish style and served up with a touch of jazz. Sounds Familiar is exactly that: a selection of familiar
favorites of decades past. These four ladies with soothing voices from
all the way across the Atlantic have poured their hearts into these arrangements,
stylizing with hooks and smooth changes, dynamic crescendo movement and
impeccable rhythm. "Rock-a-Bye Your Baby With A Dixie Melody" and "The
Lady Is A Tramp" are two songs that are never tiresome! Track 7, "Little
Bit More" is a fantastic song and incredibly well sung! "Orange Colored
Sky", is very clever, but don't let it startle you! Make sure you listen
to this CD all the way through!

Under the direction of the highly regarded Sandi Wright this new release from the vibrant Sweet Adeline Chorus is a tribute to some of the great Hollywood songs. This fine women's chorus sings with exuberance and joy on this live recording of standards and lesser-known songs. Featuring many arrangements of barbershop guru David Wright including the wonderful Elvis song "Love Me Tender" and "How's Every Little Thing in Dixie" this recording clearly shows how much fun this chorus has singing to a live audience and is sure to brighten anybody's day.

As their name implies, this is super Sweet Adelines barbershop with bounce. Winners of the 1991 Internationals, this foursome is obviously well-grounded in the fundamentals of jazz - listen to "Let's Get Away From All," or "Little Jazz Bird" to hear them scat and trill; if there was any doubt, the "Ella Medley" brings it home. However, these embellishments are the icing; the chord voicings are solidly barbershop, and each part works vertically as well as horizontally on its own merits. It's the relationship of each part to the whole that elevates an arrangement from the pedestrian to the exceptional. These ladies also have a way with a coda: "Swanee" and the afore-mentioned "Little Jazz Bird" are thrilling. Songlist
