Created during an inspirational collaboration between the Fairfax Choral Society Poetry of Music, the Fairfax Public Schools and the composer, young people were encouraged to write poetry. The metaphor embraced by the young poets is that of a flame in all of us that, which when encouraged, keeps dancing and giving others hope. The music embraces this reverence and when joined by the text, a truly special message is shared.
Composer: Jim Papoulis
According to the composer, 'The Song of the Ocean was written to celebrate the ocean and bridges science and art in the context of negotiations regarding future governance of the ocean.' The song was first performed at the University of Aberdeen in 2020. The global online premiere was on World Ocean Day, 8th June 2021, performed by a choir of singers from around the world with the Philharmonia Orchestra, as a project with DOSI (Deep-Ocean Stewardship Initiative). Officially endorsed as UN Ocean Decade Activity as part of the 2021-2030 United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development.
