Born in Pamiers, Ariege, Midi-Pyrenees, he studied at the Niedermeyer school of religious music in Paris with several of the greats including Camille Saint-Saens. He eventually became organist at Eglise de la Madeleine.
He became a prolific composer, and among the most noteworthy of his works are his Requiem, an opera; Penelope, an orchestral suite Masques et Bergamasques (based on music for a dramatic entertainment, or divertissement comique), and music for Pelleas et Melisande. He also wrote chamber music and his two piano quartets are particularly well known. Other chamber music includes two piano quintets, two cello sonatas, two violin sonatas, and a number of piano pieces. He is also known for his songs, such as Clair de lune, Apres un reve, Les roses d'Ispahan, En priere, and several song cycles, including La Bonne Chanson with settings of poems by Verlaine.

Review: The vocal score for this classic work, with Latin and English text, edited and arranged for SSA and piano by Desmond Ratcliffe.
Songlist: Agnus Dei (Barber), SANCTUS, LIBERA ME, PIE JESU, IN PARADISUM, INTROIT - KYRIE, OFFERTORIUM
Review: Cantique de Jean Racine was written in 1865 during Faur'e's final year at the École Niedermeyer, winning him the first prize for composition, and this elegant work now holds a cherished place in the choral repertory for both sacred and secular occasions. Presented with an English singing translation in addition to the original French, John Rutter's edition includes an accompaniment for organ or piano, and the work may also be performed with the transcription for harp and strings (available separately), compatible with the instrumentation for the OUP edition of the Faur'e Requiem in its 1893 version.

Review: This title is taken from the compilation French Songs and Choruses for Mixed-Voice Choir. While not as overtly demanding as Apres un reve, perhaps the most difficult of Faure's songs, this composition requires not only a sense of line and of delicacy, but rarely supplies the exact pitch to the singer before he or she embarks on the highly exposed vocal lines. The accompaniment often does supply the pitch right after the singer, which makes it easy for the singer to correct anymisteps--and for the audience to notice problems. The accompaniment is typical Faure, with almost constant use of arpeggios and almost no heavy chords, giving the feeling of transparency that characterizes so many of his songs. The vocal lines are equally graceful and typically Faure, in flowing descending phrases.
Review: Expertly arranged Vocal Collection by Gabriel Fauré from the Kalmus Edition series. This is from the Impressionistic and Romantic eras.

Review: For female or boys' voices. Vocal score (in English and Latin) contains all voice parts and piano accompaniment, edited by Desmond Ratcliffe. Contents: Ave Maria - Ave Verum Corpus - Cantique de Jean Racine - Maria, Mater Gratiae - Messe Basse - Tantum Ergo.
Songlist: AVE MARIA, AVE VERUM CORPUS, CANTIQUE DE JEAN RACINE, MARIA, MATER GRATIAE, MESSE BASSE, TANTUM ERGO
Review: Faure was not drawn to compose a Requiem because of the death of a loved one, even though his mother had died during the early stages of composition and his father had passed away two years before. Faure's composition does not set his Requiem to the standard liturgical text, instead adding a lyrical Pie Jesu and transcendent Paradisum, and omitting the Dies Irae and Tuba Mirum - which, for most composers, are opportunities to demonstrate the dramatic possibilities available with the choral and orchestral forces. As a result the mood of the Requiem is relatively calm and peaceful and often referred to as a lullaby of death. Faure's unconventional composition has become a firm favourite in the repertoire and available here is the vocal score, for soloists and SATB choir with piano accompaniment, as edited by Desmond Ratcliffe.
Review: This edition presents Fauré's masterpiece in a form which accords with his original intention that it should be a liturgical Requiem with accompaniment of organ and chamber ensemble. The 1893 version is an expansion of Fauré's original, prepared by the composer for a performance at the Church of the Madeleine in Paris and containing two additional movements, the Offertoire and the Libera me. In contrast to the fully orchestrated version that was published in 1900, this edition preserves the original chamber instrumentation, and it also contains a full English translation by John Rutter.
Songlist: Introit et Kyrie, Offertoire, Sanctus, Pie Jesu, Agnus Dei, Libera me, In paradisum

Review: Tis is a re-release at mid-price of John Rutter's Gramophone Award-winning 1984 recording of Faure's Requiem. The first-ever performance on disc of the work in its intimate original version - famously re-discovered by Rutter in the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris after a century of neglect - it remains one of the timeless jewels in the crown of the Collegium catologue. Hailed on release as 'the Faure Requiem of the future' (Music Week), Rutter's performance with the Cambridge Singers and members of the City of London Sinfonia has transformed the way in which we view one of the great works of European sacred music, and remains definitive.
Songlist: Requiem: Introit et Kyrie, Offertoire, Sanctus, Pie Jesu, Agnus Dei, Libera me, In paradisum, Ave verum Corpus, Tantum ergo, Ave Maria, Maria, Mater gratiae, Cantique de Jean Racine, Messe Basse: Kyrie eleison, Messe Basse: Sanctus, Messe Basse: Benedictus, Messe Basse: Agnus Dei
Review: The Faure Requiem was begun in 1886 and finished in the first weeks of 1888. Unlike other requiems, this piece has no sense of doom or angst. It expresses no fear of death, but rather depicts the reaching for eternal happiness. Warm and comforting, this work is a rare gem in the French repertoire. Durufle's greatest known work was his Requiem written in 1947. At the time it was commissioned, Durufle was composing a suite for organ solo based on the Gregorian chants of the Mass for the Dead. It was this suite that was expanded and transformed to become the requiem. The insightful interpretation and superb performance of these requiems by Robert Shaw and the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra & Chorus is unmatched. This release received a Grammy Award for Best Engineered Classical Recording.
Songlist: Faure Requiem (7 Movements), - Introit & Kyrie, - Offertory, - Sanctus, - Pie Jesu, - Agnus Dei, - Libera me, - In Paradisum, Durufle Requiem (9 Movements), - Introit, - Kyrie, - Domine Jesu Christe, - Sanctus, - Pie Jesu, - Agnus Dei, - Lux Aeterna, - Libera me, - In Paradisum

Review: with CDs of diction lessons and piano accompaniments; includes historical notes, translations and International Phonetic Alphabet This is a collection of the most famous songs of Fauré. Diction lessons were recorded by coach, conductor and diction specialist Pierre Vallet. The diction for each song is recorded twice: first recited as an actor would speak it, showing flow of the language and mood, followed by a slow, deliberate lesson, allowing time for the student to repeat each line. This experienced language coach adapts the R in French in the slow versions as recommended for classical singers. He is also very senstive to liaisons between word sounds in musical settings. Contents: Après un rêve- Au bord de l'eau - Aurore - Automne - Chanson d'amour - Clair de lune - Ici-bas - Le Secret - Les berceaux - Les roses d'Ispahan - Lydia - Mandoline - Nell - Notre amour - Rencontre. 00001145 High Voice, Book/CDs $17.95 00001146 Low Voice, Book/CDs $17.95
