Male Christmas Choral Recordings

This is how some of these songs were meant to be sung. Male ensembles, large and small, belting out or softly delivering centuries-old or modern holiday pieces… These aren’t just albums, they’re holidays-in-a-CD-case! Gregorian and Sarum chant, Canadian, American, Australian and European carols, Tchaikovsky, Biebl, Lauridsen and works by many others whose names you know, and whose music you love. This is some of the most fun you can have with Christmas music that doesn’t actually involve singing it yourself – sit back with your feet up, a snug afghan on your lap, a cozy fire in the fireplace (yes, even if it’s June), and drink it all in!

Schnittpunktvokal : A Cappella Christmas - Traditional Carols from Austria

Review: The Alpine folk song rests on harmony (Viergesang), and the Christmas carol in particular represents a heritage which has not only to be studied but also to be "lived." The vocal quartet Schnittpunktvokal does both, and the result is a compelling shaping of simple, penetrating, and always moving music. What makes this recording of authentic Austrian folk music so unique is not only the ensemble's very special style but also the warmth and clarity of the four male voices, which blend together without losing their individual character, with everything combined with perfect intonation.

Songlist: Hiatz Kimp a Wundabare Zeit, Is Schon Still, Is Schon Kalt, Immert Amal, Was Sagg Denn Da Wind, Tiaf Eine Is Wintar, Schean Still Fallt Da Schne, Zund an Es Liacht, Liabs Christkindl Tua Wachsn, Es Bluhn Drei Rosen Auf Einem Zweig, Josef Und Maria, Vom Himmel Scheint a Liachter Schtean, Ubar Die Stapflan, Andachtsjodler, Schlaf, Schlaf, Holdseliges Jesulein, Mir Kummts Auf Da Welt Heut So Wundalalt Vur, Krumpa Haxmartin, Wo Seind Denn Heint Die Haltabuam, O Bruada, Schau Hin, Was Muass Heute Nacht Wohl Sein Gschehgn, 4000 Jahr Verflossen Sind, Werst Mei Liacht Ume Sein, Was Wird Uns Denn Bringen Das Neue Jahr

Sistine Chapel Choir : Christ Is Born

Review: "Christ Is Born" and "Christ Is Risen" were two highly-acclaimed films of the late-1950s that captured the Sistine Choir in concert within the Sistine Chapel. This album is a collection of the sacred songs recorded for the soundtracks to the films in 1957. 10 songs, starting with "Die Santificatus (Day Sanctified)," by Palestrina, who also composed "Hodie Christius Natus Est (Today, Christ Is Born)" and "Improperia (Reprove)," "Pastores Dicite (Speak, Shepherds)," by the Spanish master Morales, Vittoria's "Tenebrae (Darkness)," Gregorian chants "Rorate Caeli (Song of Advent)" and "Victimae Paschali (Easter Victim)," Bartolucci's "Ave Maria, Vergine Fiore (Hail Mary, Virgin Flower)," "Vexilla Regis (King's Insignia)," and the traditional hymn "Adeste Fideles (O Come All Ye Faithful)" complete the program. Some organ accompaniment. Beautiful sacred music from the Sistine Choir, celebrating the birth of Christ

Vienna Boys Choir with Placido Domingo / Hermann Prey : Christmas with

Review: This recording is a combination of two earlier releases: "Domingo and the Vienna Boys Choir" and "Hermann Prey and the Vienna Boys Choir," now out of print. Vienna Boys' Choir : Christmas With

Review: The incomparable Vienna Boys' Choir sings two masterpieces with the Stuttgart Philharmonic Orchestra. Led by Peter Marschik, the ensemble performs the "Coronation" Mass in C Major by W.A. Mozart and "Ich hatte viel Bekummernis," by J.S. Bach. The Coronation Mass is traditionally believed to have been written for the crowning of an image of the Virgin Mary in a church near Salzburg. Bach's cantata was written to be sung the third Sunday after Trinity. Both pieces have lovely solo moments, particularly the mournful "Seufzer, Thranen, Kummer, Not," for soprano with oboe obbligato.

Songlist: Mass in C Major K. 317 "Coronation" (Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart):, - Kyrie, - Gloria, Credo, - Sanctus, - Benedictus, Agnus Dei, Cantata "Ich hatte Viel Bekummernis" (Johann Sebastian Bach):, Prima Parte:, - Sinfonia, - Corro, - Aria, - Recitativo, - Aria, - Coro, Seconda Parte:, - Recitativo, - Duetto, - Coro, - Aria, - Coro

Washington Men's Camerata : Masters In This Hall - Christmas Music For Men's Chorus

Review: Thomas Beveridge and the Washington Men's Camerata give glorious and joyful performances on this Christmas recording. The triumphant title piece "Masters in this Hall" begins with the chorus and a soft drum beat that eventually grows to include organ and virtuosic piano. This and most of the other pieces are arranged by Beveridge, who is very accomplished in writing for men's voices. Juxtaposing the male sound are several soprano solos sung by Rosa Lamoreaux including "The First Mercy" by Peter Warlock. Other highlights include Beveridge's arrangement of "The Shepherds' Farewell" from Berlioz's L'Enfance du Christ and Biebl's peaceful "Ave Maria."

Songlist: Carol of the Drum, The First Mercy, O Maria, Diana Stella, The Three Holy Kings, Lo, How a Rose e'er Blooming, The Shepherds' Farewell, Ave Maria, O Tannenbaum/Adeste Fideles, Wassail Song, The Holly and the Ivy, Carol of the Birds, March of the Kings, O Holy Night, Carol of the Bells, Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring, El est ne, Quittez Pasteurs, In Dulci Jubilo/Angels We Have Heard on High

Choir of King's College, Cambridge : A Festival Of Nine Lessons And Carols

Review: The Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols was first held on Christmas Eve 1918. It was planned by Eric Milner-White, who at the age of thirty-four had just been appointed Dean of King's after experience as an army chaplain which had convinced him that the Church of England needed more imaginative worship. (He devised our Advent Carol Service in 1934, and was a liturgical pioneer and authority during his twenty two years as Dean of York.) The choir included sixteen trebles as laid down in King Henry VI's statutes, but until 1927 the men's voices were provided partly by Choral Scholars and partly by older Lay Clerks, and not, as now, by fourteen undergraduates. Almost immediately other churches adapted the service for their own use. A wider frame began to grow when the service was first broadcast in 1928 and, with the exception of 1930, it has been broadcast annually, even during the Second World War. Sometime in the early 1930s the BBC began broadcasting the service on overseas programmes. It is estimated that there are millions of listeners worldwide, including those to Radio Four in the United Kingdom. In recent years it has become the practice to broadcast a digital recording on Christmas Day on Radio Three, and since 1963 a shorter service has been filmed periodically for television.

Songlist: Once In Royal David's City, Bidding Prayer, Up! Good Christen Folk And Listen, The Truth From Above, First Lesson, Adam LAy Ybounden, Second Lesson, Sussex Carol, In The Bleak Mid-Winter, Third Lesson, In Dulci Jubilo, God Rest You Merry Gentlemen, Fourth Lesson, A Tender Shoot, The Lamb, Fifth Lesson, Joy's Seven, Gabriel's Lesson, Sixth Lesson, Dormi Jesu, Riu Riu Chiu, Seventh Lesson, The Fayrfax Carol, While Shepards Watched, Eighth Lesson, I Saw Three Ships, Illuminare Jerusalem, Ninth Lesson, O Come All Ye Faithful, Prayer And Blessing, and more

Choir of King's College, Cambridge : Essential Carols

Review: Another fine collection of Christmas carols from the Anglican tradition. Some albums are tailor-made for Christmas Eve listening, the cozy musical equivalent of a roaring fire, a mug of eggnog, and the bright lights on the tree. The morning of Christmas Day requires something else entirely, and that's when this set of Essential Carols from the Choir of King's College, Cambridge, will fit the bill, with the angelically pure voices of young British choristers blending to the strains of traditional carols both familiar and little-known. This is Christmas music sung the old-fashioned way, its simplicity and spiritual warmth not compromised by big operatic voices or pop personalities. Recorded under the direction of David Willcocks between 1959 and '65, these performances sound truly timeless today, and no matter how knowledgeable you are about Christmas music, you'll find some surprises among these 38 carols.

King's Singers : J.S. Bach Christmas Oratorio

Review: A stunning new jazz arrangement by Bill Dobbins of J.S. Bach's Christmas Oratorio, performed by Grammy-award-winning ensembles The King's Singers and the WDR (West German Radio, Cologne) Big Band. Recorded live in concert last year, this performance captures the timeless and versatile nature of Bach's work, retaining the integrity of the original within a wholly new musical setting. Dobbins's aims in creating the arrangement were four-fold: to convey the Christmas story of the original; to illustrate the musical diversityand imagination of the entire work through selected representative numbers from the original six cantatas;to translate the musical content and dramatic character of the original into jazz and latin idioms while retaining the spirit of Bach's music; and to showcase the talents of the ensembles.

Gents : Follow That Star

Review: After their first CD for Channel Classics: The Gentlemen of the Chapel Royal, with English Polyphony of the Renaissance, now present themselves in a completely different guise: on this Christmas CD they give you a glimpse of their taste for the lighter styles. You will hear a wide selection of the personal favourites of their singers, such as Follow that star, A Wonderful Christmastime, and Jingle Bell Rock. In addition to other popular Christmas Ballads from the American Songbook, such as Have yourself a Merry Little Christmas and White Christmas, they have put a new spin on a couple of traditional carols, like Silent Night and Es ist ein Ros entsprungen. Most of the arrangements were written especially for The Gents.

Songlist: Follow That Star, Gaudete Christus Est Natus, Es Ist Ein Ros Entsprungen, Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, White Christmas, Walking in the Air, Wonderful Christmastime, Hijo de la Luna, Santa Claus Is Coming to Town, Just Another Star, Jingle Bell Rock, Let It Snow, The Christmas Song, Sleighride, Winter Wonderland, Silent Night

New York Polyphony : Sing Thee Nowell

Review: The holiday season generally abounds with similar-sounding releases, but the year 2014 brought an unusually fresh crop including this release from the vocal quartet New York Polyphony, excellently recorded by BIS at a boychoir chapel in Princeton, New Jersey. The group follows the common procedure of including music from the Middle Ages to the present day, but they push the boundaries at each step with a distinctive sound that flirts with, but does not adopt, the textures made famous by the Swingle Singers. This has a revelatory effect in Philippe Verdelot's Gabriel Archangelus, a work that does not sound like much when dutifully sung by a cathedral choir. Many pieces are grouped by Christmas subtheme -- Annunciation, Epiphany, Advent, and Nativity -- and the program is cannily put together to show ideas refracted through the music of various periods. For many, though, the chief attraction will be the impeccably close harmonies of New York Polyphony, and that kind of sheer skill rarely coexists with such programming sophistication. An ideal gift for someone who likes a cappella, small group polyphony.

Songlist: Veni Emmanuel, Adam lay ybounden, Gabriel archangelus, Gabriel archangelus, There is no rose of swych vertu, There is no rose (based on the tune Hereford), There is no rose, Nesciens mater, O pia virgo, Nowell: Out of your sleep, Nowell: Arise and wake, 5 Carols, Sleep Now, O Magnum Mysterium, Quem pastores laudavere, Quid petis, O Fili?, Un flambeau, Jeanette, Isabelle, Bethlehem Down, Magi veniunt, O Little Town of Bethlehem

Review: These delightful carols are the result of a tradition begun by the Reverend Bates G. Burt, his composer son, Alfred and friend-of-the-family Whila Hutson; for many years these three collaborated on the creation of original carols, which were then sent to friends as Christmas cards. The fifteen carols as published are arranged in three sets. The carols within each set were selected to provide a variety of sound and facility of transition from one carol to the next so that each set may be performed as a program group

Songlist: Caroling, Caroling Long Ago, O Hearken Ye, Nigh Bethlehem, All On A Christmas Morning, We'll Dress The House, Ah, Bleak And Chill Wintry Wind, Christmas Cometh Caroling, Some Children See Him, Jesu Parvule, Bright, Bright, The Holly Berries, The Star Carol, Carol Of The Mother, What Are The Signs, Christ In The Stranger's Guise, Come, Dear Children

Chor Leoni : Choral Christmas Collection

Review: A perennial favourite with Vancouver audiences, Corlynn's sweet and gentle 'Christmas Angel' has elements of traditional and popular music. it is sure to be a hit with your audiences too. A smooth and jazzy version of 'Silent Night,' this piece is straightforward and suitable for any Christmas concert. Written in a traditional chant-like style with unison lines alternating with lush harmonic passages, Chor Leoni discovered Willan's previously unpublished version of 'Magnificat' and instantly fell in love with it. One of Chor Leoni's favourite modern Christmas carols, 'Yuletide Fires' is

Jay Althouse : Christmas Spirituals for Men's Voices

Review: A selection of superb well-crafted orginal a cappella Christmas sprituals. "Good News" opens with an energetic melody sung by the low voice with the upper three voices singing in counterpoint above. Rhythmic energy develops the piece and it ends with an electrifyimg eight measure coda that's the pinnacle of excitement. No solos, no tempo changes make for quick learning. In the classic spiritual tradition, yet fresh and contemporary." Whisper! Whisper!" has strong dynamic contrasts (from "Whisper, whisper, tiny baby in a manger lay" to "Shout it out from the hills and valleys; baby born today") make this a winner for your choir. A lush middle section contrasts with the rhythmic excitement of the opening theme. Brief, easy solos for male singer. Who's That Baby?" opens with the basses asking, in a hushed, rhythmic melody, "Who's that baby in a manger bed?" The text is classic spiritual style, but the music is anything but... it's fresh, new, and alive! "Have You Heard?" features contrasting dynamics (excellent for teaching phrasing), male solos, and a tender middle section which contrasts with the hushed excitement of the opening and closing melody. Includes a descant on the final chorus.

Songlist: Good News!, Who's That Baby?, Whisper! Whisper! ( Baby Born Today ), Have You Heard?, Look Up, Children

Various Arrangers : Christmas Spirituals for Men's Voices Vol 2

Review: Very cool! A rhythmic and refreshing twist on a holiday favorite! "God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen" features dynamic syncopation and vocal interplay between parts. The traditional melody is presented in a slightly less than traditional way amidst the dramatic vocal ostinatos and countermelodies of the other parts, then finishes with fabulous glee club choral sound. "Go Tell It on the Mountain" has always been one of our livelier Christmas traditions and Carolyn Jennings's arrangement and additional text is spectacular. This exuberant arrangement for men's voices is bubbling over with joy and good tidings. Great for glee club or men's chorus, or to give the male voices in your mixed choir a moment in the spotlight. This is a real showstopper. "We've Got Good News to Tell!" -With more than eighteen million copies of his works have been sold Don Besig is the recipient of several ASCAP Special Awards. "Jesus, What a Wonderful Child" - Rollo Dilworth's exciting arrangement of this gospel favorite is an exuberant celebration of the birth of Jesus, our Savior and King. This driving, energetic anthem is full of spirit and joy! It will stand on its own with piano only, or add some sparkle with the optional trumpets and rhythm section. A tried and true winner!

Songlist: Go, Tell it on the Mountain, We've Got Good News to Tell!, God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, Jesus, What a Wonderful Child

Various Arrangers : Christmas Spirituals for Men's Voices Vol 3

Review: William Powell has adapted Rosephanye Powell's original setting of "Glory Hallelujah To Duh Newbo'n King" for TTBB singers. The results are marvelous. This great, energetic Christmas Spiritual soars with the male voice. Church and school choirs will find this piece an excellent addition to their program. Rehearsal Trax available separately. "The Glory Manger" - Well-written straightforward arrangement of one of the more unusual spirituals, suitable for a holiday concert or worship service. Familiar harmonies make it an easily learned, readily programmed piece. The original Christmas spiritual "Mary Sat A-Rockin'" will delight the congregation. Beginning with a bass ostinato line, the tenors join, and then the women enter in a rhythmic and energetic pattern. Including some divisi for the women, and an interesting key change, "Mary Sat A-Rockin'" explores the full range of dynamics and will be a memorable selection for Christmas.

Ralph Vaughan Williams : Nine Carols For Male Voices

Review: Vaughan Williams arranged these carols during World War 1 for the "choir" he developed among the men in his Field Ambulance unit. In 1917 they were stationed in Greece, near Katerini, on a hillside with Mount Olympus towering above. Ursula Vaughan Williams writes "Another experince, which no one who was there forgot, was carol singing on Christmas Eve: snow-capped Olympus, the clear night, the stars, and Ralph's choir singing carols of Hereford and Sussex with passionate nostaglia. The choir made that Christmas so far from home one that had a special quality, a special beauty, long remembered."

Songlist: God Rest Ye Merry, And Joseph Was A-Walking (Cherry Tree Carol), The First Nowell, The Lord At First, Coventry Carol, I Saw Three Ships, A Virgin Most Pure, Dives And Lazarus
