Women's Choir and Chorus music CDs recordings

Chants, rounds, liturgical work, secular or sacred, folk from around the world - the one constant is the beauty of their harmony. Women’s choirs today disprove, over and over, the out-of-date myth that only men’s voices can deliver choral music with any true authenticity. Some of the ensembles we carry sing work written for the male voice, some music written for women’s voices – some even sing music originally written as instrumental. Whatever they’re singing, they all do it with passion and a purity of sound that will please even the most discerning of choral music fans.

Singing Nuns and Ladies : Seized By Sweet Desire

Review: Until recently the role of women as composers and performers of both sacred and secular music during the Middle Ages has been seriously underestimated. This disc, sung by the all-female group Musica Ficta, reveals how well suited to women's voices are music from Notre-Dame in Paris and the songs of many trouveres (the northern counterparts of the troubadours of Languedoc). The latter songs, for instance, often feature female protagonists and present different perspectives on love and life to those by their male counterparts.

Songlist: Alleluja, Viderunt omnes, A vos veig, chevalier sire, Je sui jonete, Soufres, maris, et si ne vous anuit, S'on me regarde, Cil bruns ne me meine mie, Nus ne mi pourroit, Joliement en douce, Sederunt pricipes, Mors, Non vos relinquam, Homo quo vigeas

Sistrum : Dancing Naked at the Edge of Dawn onsale

Review: Lansing, MI's award-winning, 30-strong women's chorus Sistrum's vision is "to provide a musical haven where women may find their voices and enjoy the camaraderie offered by the Sistrum community." They further endeavor "to create a choral instrument by which our members can use their voices to raise beautiful music and powerful energy." This CD was inspired by Sistrum's first commissioned work, the 3-part "Dancing Naked at the Edge of Dawn," with words by Kris Radish and music by Jenni Brandon. There are 15 songs here, a World tour, if you will, beginning with the piano-accompanied French tune "Ah! Si mon moine voulait danser," a lighthearted piece about a girl trying to get a monk to dance with her by bribing him with material possessions; two chants; with roots in the Celtic pagan culture, "Full Moonlight Dance" and "Everything She Touches;" "Koowu" is directly translated as "strength" and incorporates Middle Eastern scales; Stephen Hatfield's "Camino Caminante" is inspired by the swirling mix of cultures in Miami; and the lightly percussioned, Tamil-based "Odi Odi" urges us to look internally for inspiration and empowerment. Randi Driscoll's powerful "What Matters," the traditional Spiritual "Balm in Gilead," Harold Arlen's "Over the Rainbow," the 3-part, piano-accompanied title tune, and "Still I Rise," an ode to survival regardless of the challenge or obstacle, complete our list of favorites. "Dancing" is a beautiful, inspirational collection from talented Sistrum!

Songlist: Ah! Si mon moine voulait danser, Full Moonlight Dance , Everything She Touches, Koowu , My Love Walks in Velvet, Both Page and Pen, Camino Caminante, Odi Odi , What Matters , Balm in Gilead , Over the Rainbow , The Dark Line , Morning Prayer, Dancing Naked at the Edge of Dawn , Still I Rise

Sofia Women's Chamber Choir : Nightingales

Review: Conductor Vassil Arnaudov, who died in 1991, was a huge influence on the 40-strong women's choir, helping it build a broad repertoire, from European renaissance-baroque polyphony to 20th century music, and turning many Bulgarian choral works into masterpieces. There is light piano accompaniment on a few of these 23 pieces, but the emphasis is on the lilting, soaring soprano voices with their crystal-clear diction, that dance over difficult passages with grace and polished ease. Some of our favorites are the title tune, Schubert's "Die Nachtigall," Thomas Morley's "Good morrow, fair ladies of the May," Beethoven's "Ich liebe dich," Philip Koutev's "Draguna and the nightingale," Verdi's "Laudi alla Vergine Maria" and Mozart's "Ave verum corpus," but each piece is beautifully realized. A special collection of choral music by one of the best choirs in Europe, directed by the brilliant conductor who brought them to that place.

Songlist: Wohlauf, ihr Gaste gut, Ce moys de May, Good Morrow, fair ladies of the May, Ich liebe dich, Die Machtigall, In Meeres, Meerfe, Der Wasserman, Angel, Chorus from the Opera "Tsar Kaloyan", Dragana and the nightingale, Lyulyai, Done, Winter, Sumna v sunnite gradini, Tebe poem, Havalite imya Gospodne, Dostoino est, Ave Maria, Ave Maria, Ave verum corpus, Laudi all Vergine Maria, Are verum corpus, Salve Regina

Sofia Women's Chamber Choir : Quiet Songs

Review: The CD includes several, now cherished as a valuable archive, recordings of the great Bulgarian choral conductor Prof. Vassil ARNAUDOV, director of long standing of the Sofia Chamber Women's Choir. These are the enchanting "Winter Reflections" by Todor Popov, a composer closely associated with Arnaudov, just like the other authors in the CD - Lyubomir Pipkov, Konstantin Iliev, Alexander Tekeliev, Alexander Tanev and Ivan Spassov. With the exception of the latter's "Triptych", all the songs were created for and first performed by the choir, on the initiative of Vassil Arnaudov who was an invaluable promoter and friend of Bulgarian vocal music. After his death the choir not only took his name bur also carried on his ideas and trends championed by his pupil Theodora Pavlovitch (who is presently the choir's conductor) and choir-master, pianist and vocal pedagogue Irina Shtiglich. The superb sound and emotional expressiveness make this CD of tenderly nostalgic and intimately lyrical songs a precious collection for music lovers.

Songlist: A drop fell from the sky, You, who are looking for a for, My mouth will not sing and argue forver, To Grandma, I know a dearly cherished place, Bright morning, Triptych , Quiet evening, White, white snow, Dawn came in the sleep gardens, Reverie (lyrics by Elissaveta Bagryana), Meet it is (Dostoino est), We sing Thee (Tebe poem), Our Father (Otche nash), Let the maiden be mine), Autumn was coming (lyrics by Ivan Davidkov), Winter (lyrics by Vatyo Rakovski), Winter Reflections , It's snowing, it's snowing, Snow is falling like a memory, The snow is so cold, Like snow, like snow, indeed

Sofia Women's Chamber Choir : Schumann - Choral Works For Womans' Voice

Review: The release features a selection of songs by Schumann, performed by the well-known Bulgarian female chamber choir VASSIL ARNAUDOV conducted by Irina Stiglich and Theodora Pavlovich. Almost all songs were composed in the forties of the 19th century, a time of elation for Schumann, who had finally found real happiness in life. His lyrical songs are an expression of his innermost feelings of joy, sorrow, delight and inspirations connected with the poetry of his beloved Moerike, Ruekert, Eichendorff, Elisabeth Kulmann and other German poets who have been a source of inspiration for many composers of romantic music. Some of the shorter songs like Rosmarien, Mailied, Fruehlingslied, Spinnelied, as well as the chorus from the oratory "Das Paradies und die Peri" are real musical jewels. Selected with much precision, the lyrical songs reveal Schumann's talent in shaping the small, always exquisitely woven musical form, his musical gift to create images, metaphors, characters, and natural scenery. The interpretation of singers and choir-masters alike is magnificent with its sincere emotion, subtle nuances of sound and colour, keen feeling for ensemble and perfect intonation.

Songlist: Tamburinschlagerin, Waldmadchen, Klosterfraulein, Soldatenbraut, Meerfey, Die Capelle, Rosmarien, Jager Wohlgemuth, Der Wassermann, Das verlassene Magdlein, Der Bleicherin Nachtlied, In Meeres Mitten, Mailied, Fruhlingslied, An die Nachtigall, An den Abendstern, Nanie, Triolett, Spruch , Mailied, Spinnelied, Sommerruh, Chor der houris as "Das Paradies und die Peri", Landliches Lied, Lied

Sound Circle : Sound Circle

Review: Twenty-one women gather to experience the joy of making music together and to share that joy with their audiences, performing songs in a multiplicity of styles (with elements of classical, world and folk, though strictly speaking, Sound Circle is none of these). Featuring composers such as Ysaye Maria Barnwell and Holly Near (but also original works commissioned specifically for the group), the ensemble has fashioned a full-spectrum, transparently textured recording that can be minimalist or celebratory in turn, though always congruent in its musicality. Artistic Director Sue Coffee's staunch credentials ensure Sound Circle's unmistakable grounding in the traditions of Western harmony, while providing the setting for the group's highly personal expression.

Songlist: Fly Me Away, Sun Won't Stop, Golden Apples Of The Sun, Full Woman, Ave Maria, Stone Circles, Would You Harbor Me?, Mother Moon, Wanting Memories, Keep The Fire, Love Comes Again, How Do You Feel?, Shooting Star, Something Inside So Strong, Dona Nobis Pacem, I Sound Circle

Sound Circle : Stick Around

Review: "Stick Around" is Jonestown, CO-based Sound Circle's second CD, their first, the well-received "Sound Circle," was released in 1998. There are 22 women in this women's a cappella ensemble, five each of Sopranos 1 and 2, and six each of Altos 1 and 2. The exquisite liner notes, with a Colorado mountain scene on the cover, contain the words to these 18 beautiful, life-affirming songs: "Eagle Song," "We A...," "Calling All Angels," Alanis Morissette's "You Learn," Billy Joel's "Lullabye (Goodnight, My Angel)," Cindy Lauper's "Time After Time," "Ka-chinka-cha," "Bliss Mantra (Poem)," "Bliss Mantra (song)," "Clangor, Clamor, Clapperclaw," "Sondra Met A Koala," "That's Alright," "what i want," "Mother, It is Night," "Come Into Our Circle" (which could be SC's theme song), "Another Train," "Weathering" and "Stick Around." On the back cover of the CD is a photo of the smiling, glowing faces of the group together under a pine tree, as if inviting us to join them in song. Deep feelings for humanity and the earth, gratitude for life and love of music come through clearly on "Stick Around," a very special CD!

Trio Mediaeval : A Worcester Ladymass

Review: Oslo's Trio Mediaeval presents a reconstruction of a 13th century votive Mass to the Virgin Mary, based on surviving manuscripts from a Benedictine Abbey in the English Midlands. Inserted amid the medieval music are a Credo and Benedicamus Domino specially composed for this programme by Gavin Bryars: the old and the new intermingle in the work of this vocal ensemble. Anna Maria Friman: "The members of Trio Mediaeval feel that performing medieval music today gives us the freedom to let our imagination and ideas flow, as though we are creating contemporary music."

Songlist: Salve sancta parens, Kyrie, Gloria, Munda Maria, Sponsa rectoris omnium, O sponsa Dei electa, O Maria virgo pia, Benedicta / Virgo Dei genitrix, Credo, Felix namque, Salve rosa florum, Grata iuvencula, Inviolata integra mater, De supernis sedibus, Dulciflua tua memoria, Sanctus, Agnus Dei, Beata viscera, Alma Dei genitrix, Benedicamus Domino

Trio Mediaeval : Folk Songs

Review: The Norwegian women's ensemble Trio Mediaeval specializes in early music, but also sings new music, and in this album it branches out to arrangements of folk songs. Folk musician Tone Krohn and group member Linn Andrea Fuglseth made the arrangements, which are magical and lovely. Given the constantly evolving conventions of the folk repertoire, the trio and arrangers are under no constraints to discover and follow an authentic performance practice for the songs, so the arrangements are stylistically and idiomatically varied. They retain the simplicity of a folk song, but the harmonies frequently push the folk style toward a heightened expressivity through the judicious (and highly effective) use of dissonance. One of the most striking characteristics of the arrangements is the textural variety they achieve -- it's frequently hard to believe that only three voices are able to create such a rich contrapuntal web. The group sings with great purity and excellent blend, so the tart harmonies really ring, and their rhythmic incisiveness keeps the music lilting. Birger Mistereggen accompanies them on various percussion instruments, drums, and jew's harp. His contributions are discreet, but add immeasurably to the color and atmospheric variety of the music. ECM's sound is characteristically immaculate, with good resonance. The beautifully performed and produced disc should appeal equally to lovers of folk music, women's voices, and contemporary music for small vocal ensembles. "Singing folk songs of its native Norway, the classical vocal ensemble tenderly melds the raw beauty of tradition with the pristine precision of classical technique. The harmonies are both earthy and ethereal, full of chill Scandinavian darkness and the huddling warmth of a shared song." - Boston Globe

Songlist: Det lisle Banet (The Little Child), So Ro, Godt Barn (Rest Now, Sweet Child), Villemann og Magnhild (Villemann and Magnhild, Tjovane (The Thieves), Nu Solen Gar Ned (The Sun is Setting), I Mine Kate Ungdomsdagar (In My Reckless, Youthful Days), Gjendines Badnlat (Gjendine's Lullaby), Rolandskvadet (The Song of Roland), Solbonn (Sun-Prayer), Nu Vilar Hela Jorden (All the Earth Now Rests in Peace), Eg Aktar Inkje (I Don't Think Much of those Boys), Den Elskte Jerusalem (Beloved Jerusalem), Till, Till Tove, Eg Veit I Himmerik Ei Borg (I Know a Stronghold in Heaven), Lova Line, Dance, Do Not Cry, Den Signede Dag (The Day of Joy), Folkefrelsar, Til Oss Kom (Saviour of the Nations, Come

Trio Mediaeval : Soir, dit-elle

Review: Founded in Oslo in 1997, trio mediaeval's repertoire is polyphonic medieval music from England and France, contemporary works and Norwegian medieval ballads and songs. Their first CD, "Words of the Angel," was released in 2001 and immediately went to the Billboard Top 10 Bestsellers list. "Soir, dit-elle" was released in 2004 and remained on the top-10 list for weeks. Linn, Torunn and Anna, trio mediaeval, sing music spanning some 500 years, but to them it is part of a timeless present. "Soir" has a sacred work by Leonel Power (1370-1445), "Missa "Alma redemptoris mater;" and 5 contemporary works, all composed for the group: Ivan Moody's "The Troparion of Kassiani," Gavin Bryars' "Laude novella-Ave regina gloriosa" and "Ave donna santissima-Venite a laudare," Andrew Smith's "Ave Maria-Regina caeli," and Oleh Harkavyy's "Kyrie." The perfect voices rise and blend in the atmosphere, carrying us up to another realm, a place of beauty, peace and meditation.

Songlist: Kyrie, Gloria, Laude novella, Ave regina gloriosa, Credo, Ave Maria, Regina caeli, Ave donna santissima, Sanctus, The Troparion of Kassiani, Venite a laudare, A Lion's Sleep, Agnus Dei , Alma redemptoris mater

Vesnivka : Rejoice

Review: Kolyadky (carols) and Shchedrivky (New Year's songs) are one of the oldest genres of Ukrainian folk music, dating back to the pre-Christian era. With the coming of Christianity in 988, pagan songs were replaced with Christian carols and hymns, and these delightful (all accompanied) songs reflect sectarian life and express wishes for good health, wealth and happiness. The all-woman Vesnivka Choir was established in 1965 by conductor/director Halyna Kondracki and has won many awards. The Toronto Ukrainian Male Chamber Choir was founded in 2001 by Kondraki in affiliation with Vesnivka. 15 tunes, from "Christ is Born" and "Heaven and earth rejoice" to "The beautiful guelder-rose" and "The Carol." Wonderful solos on "The stars shone from heaven" and "A son is born." This beautiful music, from another culture and another time, is all new to us, but that only increases our appreciation for and enjoyment of it!

Vox Femina : Still I Rise onsale

Review: Los Angeles' 31-strong women's ensemble Vox Femina blew us away with their 2002 debut album "Simply," and we have waited a long time to be able to hold CD #2 in our hot little hands. "Still I Rise," directed by Dr. Iris S. Levine and accompanied by Lisa Edwards on piano, celebrates Vox Femina's 10th anniversary season, highlighting the best of Vox's live performances. The 15 very different songs share fine arranging, flawless performances, and the exciting fact that they are live recordings. The rhythmic opening cut "Odi Odi," the spiritual "Deep River," Hildegard von Bingen and Roger Bourland's "O viridissima virga/Both Page and Pen;" Debussy's "Salut Printemps;" Ysaye M. Barnwell's lovely "Breaths;" Roy Brown's "Sky Dances;" Stuart Stotts' "Music in My Mother's House," Holly Near's "Imagine my Surprise;" Marvin Hamlisch and Edward Kleban's "At the Ballet" and the title tune by Rosephanye Powell are some favorites. But Vox is very special group of women, a bridge-building group, and each of these songs needs to be listened to, appreciated and savored. Besides piano, you might hear some flute, drums, bass, guitar, oboe and zils. Exquisite!

Vox Musica : Christmas Colours onsale

Review: Vox Musica is a 13-strong, women's choral ensemble from Sacramento, CA, directed by Daniel Paulsen, and "Christmas Colours" was recorded in Sacramento's St. Paul's Episcopal Church. We could tell we were hearing something very special here with the first of 12 Christmas tunes, John Tavener's difficult, soaring and often dissonant "A Nativity" and Cesar Carrillo's "Ave Maria," which the group handled beautifully and easily. A very sweet 17th Century German Carol, "Es Sungen Drei Engel," the lilting, joyous "Gaudete, a 16th Century Finnish Carol, Franz Biebl's lovely "Zundet An Das Licht," Tavener's "The Lord's Prayer," the 16th Century Irish melody "Love Came Down At Christmas," Nancy Telfer's 4-part "Missa Brevis" and "Silent Night," nicely arranged by Paulsen, completed the album. Many of these songs are new to us, and we were surprised and delighted to hear them. Listen to the echoing, soaring song of angels, "Love Came Down At Christmas," and you will see what we mean!

Songlist: A Nativity, Ave Maria, Es Sungen Drei Engel, Gaudete, Zundet An Das Licht, The Lord's Prayer, Love Came Down At Christmas, Missa Brevis - Kyrie, Missa Brevis - Gloria, Missa Brevis - Sanctus, Missa Brevis - Agnus Dei, Silent Night

Review: The 120-voices strong TWCD, directed by Dr. Timothy Selig, closes its 10th season with this recording of its first major commissioned work, "Only Human." Composer Robert Seeley of the San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus, and librettist Philip Littell spent many hours listening to the women of the chorus, and from that came over 30 pieces of poetry, of which 13 were set to music. All songs are performed with full orchestra. This is TWCD's sixth CD in addition to four collaborative CDs with the Turtle Creek Chorale, it has made its Carnegie Hall debut, and has received two GLAMA nominations. "Only Human" is a touching, monumental, deeply personal achievement.

Songlist: Sit By Me, The Prayer Tree, After the Long Afternoon, The Moon is Out, A Light, Mirror, Got A Match?, A Long Straight Stretch of Road , I Make My Way in the World, I Have the Prettiest Garden in East Texas, My Language, Only Human, In My Grandmother's Garden

Women's Chorus of Dallas : Our Turn onsale

Review: The 90 singers of the WCD, ably directed since 1994 by Dr. Selig, present a subscription concert series in addition to touring nationally. "Our Turn" is a sampling from their 5th Anniversary concert in June of 1994 called "We're Five!" There are 16 songs, with some light accompaniment by piano and other instruments. "Echo Song," "Sound the Trumpet," Mozart's "Alleluia," Brahms' "Ave Maria" Arron Copland's joyous "Ching-A-Ring Chaw," John Rutter's "For the Beauty of the Earth," Rossini's "Duetto Buffo di due Gatti," "Women's Medley," featuring the title tune, Helen Reddy's "I Am Woman" and David Shire's "I Want It All;" Suzanne Buhrer's hilarious "God Loves A Woman," Walter Hawkins' spiritual "I'm Goin' Up A Yonder," "Les Miserables" and Henley and Silbar's "Wind Beneath My Wings" are favorites. WomenSing : Songs of Innocence and Experience onsale

Review: Listen to rousing gospel songs, an eloquent arrangement of the hymn Amazing Grace by Ron Jeffers, Vivaldi's spirited Beatus Vir accompanied by the Jubilate Orchestra strings, contemporary works by composers such as Andrew Carter, Otmar Macha, and WomenSing's commissioned work by Libby Larsen. As its title suggests, the emotions portrayed will run the gamut as well: from the mystery of Annunciation to the menacing meandering of The Wendigo; from the full range experience of love fulfilled in the sensual Nigra Sum by Catalunyan composer Pau Casals, to the dreamy lilting of the Canadian folk tune Away From the Roll of the Sea.

Songlist: Nigra Sum, Beatus Vir, Kyrie, Sanctus Benedictus, Ave Maria, Annunciation, Ho-ja-ja , The Tyger, La Estrella, Of Being is a Bird, The Wendigo, Away from the Roll of the Sea, Amazing Grace , Thou My Everlasting Portion

Yerevan Women's Choir of Armenia : Yerevan Women's Choir

Review: The Yerevan Women's Choir of Armenia, a 30 member musical chamber group, has a distinctive fresh, exuberant sound and a repertoire that ranges from 5th Century Armenian sacred music to works of the Western choral tradition, to contemporary Scandinavian and Russian music. The Choir, which has performed more than 300 concerts throughout Armenia, the former Soviet republics and Western Europe, has won 8 international awards at European competitions. Their repertoire is drawn from the a cappella tradition of Armenian vocal art--folk melodies, sacred music and patriotic songs. This excellent CD features works by 10 Armenian composers/arrangers. Some of our favorites are "Kutanerg" by Komitas, "Abaran" by Robert Petrossian, "Amen Hair Surb" by Shnorhali, "Madrigal" by Gabrieli, and the dramatic "Metamorphoses" by Sidelnikov. The YWCA enriches the Armenian vocal tradition while at the same time exposing in to a wide new audience.

Anonymous 4 : Marie et Marion

Review: On their 1994 album Love's Illusion the extraordinary female vocal quartet ANONYMOUS 4 brought 13th-century motets of courtly love to the top of the classical charts, spending 29 weeks on Billboard's Top 200. Twenty years later they return to the source, this time exploring the juxtaposition of love and desire for the earthly lady Marion and the ardor for the heavenly Marie. On Marie et Marion Anonymous 4 continue to bring their signature exquisite vocal blend to these captivating and ethereal ancient songs. In a recent concert review, The New York Times described "Marie et Marion" as "a rich compilation of French motets...lovingly and radiantly sung."
