Women's Choir and Chorus music CDs recordings

Chants, rounds, liturgical work, secular or sacred, folk from around the world - the one constant is the beauty of their harmony. Women’s choirs today disprove, over and over, the out-of-date myth that only men’s voices can deliver choral music with any true authenticity. Some of the ensembles we carry sing work written for the male voice, some music written for women’s voices – some even sing music originally written as instrumental. Whatever they’re singing, they all do it with passion and a purity of sound that will please even the most discerning of choral music fans.

Elektra Women's Choir : Skylark

Review: British Columbia's much-acclaimed Elektra Women's Choir is known for seeking out challenging music for women, and "Skylark" is certainly no exception. It celebrates a wealth of outstanding choral repertoire for women from four areas of the world, Continental Europe, Canada, Britain and the Baltic Sea. The 13 selections are rich and varied, drawing its inspiration from nature, the church and folk traditions. For example we hear "O Vivens Fons" by Medieval abbess Hildegard von Bingen, Canadian composer Richard Kidd's "Wind Song," Gustav Holst's "Ave Maria" and Veljo Tormis' magical arrangement of the Estonian folk song "Lauliku Lapsepoli." Beautiful liner notes with the words and translations.

Songlist: O Vivens Fons, Laudi Alla Vergine Maria, Total Pulchra Es, Wind Song, Salve Regina, Snowforms, Follow Me to Carlow, Ave Maria, He Hath Entered the Heaven, Jaakobin Pojat, Lauliku Lapsepoli, On Suuri Sun Rantas Autius, Mina Olen Harman Kankaanpaasta

Female Voices of Oxford Camerata : Let Voices Resound

Review: Just the fabulous treble voices of the Oxford Camerata sing the important 16th century collection of Finnish songs known as "The Piae Cantiones". In 1592, exactly three hundred years before the founding of the modern Finnish musical establishment, the headmaster of Turku Cathedral School compiled and edited a collection of 74 songs which he entitled "Piae Cantiones" (Devout Church). As a protestant he was at odds with the catholic publisher and this religious tension is evident throughout. The melodies originated at various times and features songs up to five parts. The song now known as Good King Wenceslasis is most enjoyable and this all a cappella recording is certainly interesting. The beautiful, uniform purity of sound the singers achieve make this recording an essential addition to any collection.

Songlist: Aetas Carmen melodiae, Parce Christus spes reorum, Tempus adest floridum, Resonet in laudibus, Cedit hyems eminus, Personent hodie, Jesu dulcis memoria, In dulci jubilo, Florens juventus virginis, Jermiae prophetae, Ave maris stella, Puer natus in Bethlehem

Grand Rapids Women's Chorus : Celebrating Time Together onsale

Review: The 37-strong, a cappella Grand Rapids (MI) Women's Chorus is led by Artistic Director Lori Tennenhouse and Small Ensemble Director Martha VanderEyk, and "Celebrating Time Together" is a "best of" 15-song collection from the founding of the group in 1996 to 2006. Some favorites are four songs commissioned by the GRWC: Diane Benjamin's lightly accompanied "Miracle," Libby Larsen & Mary Oliver's string quartet accompanied "The Summer Day," Ysaye M. Barnwell & Audrey Lorde's "Memorial 1," and Marjan Helms' piano and percussion-accompanied "Rainsong;" and a pair performed by the 8-voice Small Ensemble, "My Love Walks in Velvet" and "A Red, Red Rose. Other favorites are Antonin Dvorak's lovely "Largo" (from Song of Survival, Vol.1), the powerful, drum-accompanied Akan Playground Song "Sansa Kroma," Alan E. Naplan's "Al Shlosha D'Varim," Zap Mama's rhythmic gem "Guzophela" and Eric Whitacre's "Sleep." The GRWC has a beautiful, sweet sound, strong covers and excellent new material. There's a lot to like on "Celebrating Time Together!"

Grand Rapids Women's Chorus : Where I Live onsale

Review: The pride of Grand Rapids (MI), the 42-strong Grand Rapids Women's Chorus, is directed by Lori Tennenhouse. Since its inception in 1996 the chorus has been dedicated to singing culturally diverse music that promotes appreciation of women composers and arrangements. "Where I Live," is a powerful piece by Diane Benjamin which tells the story of a woman with breast cancer through narrative and song. The CRWC performs the piece with a pianist, two violinists, viola and cello players and percussion. The material is stark, heartrending and enlightening, and includes "Somebody," "That Was the Fruit of My Orchard," "In The Hospital," "Help Me," "Peace," "My Body" and "Teach Me How." "Where I Live" is an important, unforgettable experience that shines a necessary light on a horrendous disease and the feelings and experiences of real women who must courageously stand and fight against it.

Le Mystere Des Voix Bulgares : Bulgarian Custom Songs

Review: The famous choir named The Mystery of Bulgarian Voices conducted by Dora HRISTOVA again conveys its challenge to Bulgarian folk music lovers, this time with their interpretation of songs from the most widely spread and cherished customs, those at Christmas and at St. Lazar's Day. The songs sung at Christmas and St. Lazar's Day lend specific colour in the repertoire of many ensembles. This programme is a successful attempt to select songs which represent a comparison between the two customs. Christmas is celebrated on the day when the church commemorates Christ's nativity. Yet the deep meaning of the custom is in the ancient pagan beliefs about the birth of the new sun. There are young men-Christmas-carollers and their leader is always an older man, called stanenik. According to the custom, the time for Christmas celebration is specifically set - from midnight till sunrise. The Christmas carollers make their rounds always starting to the west. They sing songs glorifying the host in every house and bless him for health and fertility. In their turn, the hosts present them with Christmas ring-shaped buns decorated with a coin and meat, beans, etc.

Songlist: First Song on the Road, Second Song on the Road, We Sing A Song for You, Cheers, Cheers to You, Master of the House, Beautiful Milka, We Sing A Song for You, A Girl Bragged, A Mighty Boy Is Saddling His Horse, Turbid Waters Were Flowing, Song on Going Out of the House, Oh, Lazar, Lazarski Bouenets, Lazar Is Coming, Lazar Is Roaming, There's A Willow, There's No Willow, Lazarska Song for the Bride, Lazarski, Beautiful Girl, Young Girls Lazaritsi, Well Aren't We Dancing, Strapping Nikola, Mother's Only Son, Lament for Lazar

Le Mystere Des Voix Bulgares : Music of Bulgaria

Review: This is an original 1955 French recording of the Ensemble, a group of women from the mountains and plains of Bulgaria, who performed for nearly a month in Paris along with local dancers and a village orchestra. This group was the predecessor of the famed Bulgarian State Radio and Television Female Vocal Choir. These are 18 traditional Bulgarian folk songs, some accompanied, that translate to such titles as "Mother Has Decided to Marry Me Off," "Theodora Is Dozing," "The Moon Shines," "A Young Girl At Parting," "Niagol Talks to Milka," "The Bird Has Come," "Come to Supper Tonight Rada," "The Drums Roll," and "Iana Has Been Surprised in the Night." The ringing, rhythmic harmonies of this ancient music surprise and delight us, reminding us of the power and expressiveness of the human voice in expressing emotions.

Songlist: Retche Mama Da Me Jeni, Polgnala E Todora, Shopski Tanz, Ogreyala Meettchinka, Trio Gaidi, Otishla Moma Hubava, Nygagul Na Milka Dumashe, Prehfrakna Ptichka, Zaspala E Fida, Bre Petrounko, Vetcheryai Rado, Bulgarska Suita, Buren Burem Zelen Buren, Stoyen Ide Ot Tsarigrad, Tamburi Drankat, Prez Gora Varvyaha, Todora Vetcheryala, Zamraknala E Yana

Les Sirenes Female Chamber Choir : There Is No Rose

Review: There Is No Rose explores a wealth of repertoire drawn from the compositional output for female voices, from a wonderful group of British composers. The first part of the CD celebrates the centenary of one of the most prolific British composers of the 20th century, Benjamin Britten, while the rest of the program includes such gems as an incredibly moving setting by Tarik O Regan of a poignant poem by Anglican priest-poet Mark Pryce, a world-premiere recording of the haunting Coventry Carol set for four-part female choir by Lionel Salter, and Elgar s The Snow, a real showpiece for Les Sirenes and one of the works that secured their place in the Grand Final of Choir of the Year 2012!

Songlist: A Ceremony of Carols, Sweet was the Song, The Song of the Woman, The Oxen , Bring Rest, Sweet Dreaming Child , The Coventry Carol, Jesu, Thou the Virgin-Born, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, A Lullaby for Becky, The Snow, Deck the Halls, Tomorrow Shall be my Dancing Day, A Merry Christmas

The Manitou Singers, comprised of 100 first year women students, have a repertoire that ranges from sacred to secular to popular ballads, and their performances have broad appeal on and off campus. Mediaeval Baebes : Best of

Review: "The Best of the Mediaeval Baebes" is their 7th CD in our catalog, all notable for their surreal photos of 8 to 13 beautiful, stunningly-attired women who sing like angels. The Baebes love 13th century a cappella (or very lightly accompanied) music, and Medieval poetry set to original compositions by group member Katherine Blake and others. This combination of classical music, sexy-looking women and costumes has made the Baebes big sellers in the a cappella and classical genres, because they sing, arrange and compose remarkably. We've listened to these songs before on previous CDs, but they haven't lost any of their power to enthrall and touch us. "Gaudette," "Ah Si Mon Moine," "Salva Nos" (lightly accompanied title tune of their debut album), "La Volta," "Love Me Broughte," "Kinderley," "Swete Sone," "Pearl," "Earthe Upon Erthe" and "How Death Comes" are particularly fine, but there's not a weak track here. Powerful, memorable and lovely.

Songlist: Gaudette, The Coventry Carol, Salve Virgo Virginum, Ah Si Mon Moine, Veni, Veni, Now Springes The Spray, Salva Nos, Foweles In The Frith, Miri It Is, Alba, Love Me Broughte Beatrice, La Volta, Kinderly, Swete Sone, Pearl, When Thou Turuf Is Thy Tour, Erthe Upon Erthe , Ecci Mundi Gaudium, How Death Comes

Mediaeval Baebes : Mirabilis : 00 1 CD : Katharine Blake : : NTW30415B.2

Mediaeval Baebes : Mirabilis

Review: "Mirabilis" is a Latin word with pre-Christian or pagan origins that was used in the Mediaeval period to describe a supernatural force on the fringes of this world. Eight beautiful women with equally beautiful voices and a fetish for stunning costumes (which they model in the exquisite full-color liner notes and which are now approaching the size and complexity of costumes created for SF's "Beach Blanket Babylon") continue to prove that 13th-15th century English music and poetry are totally hot and sexy. The Baebes, now down to 8 members, bring us another exotic collection of 18 songs largely from early English sources, with music and arrangements by Katherine Blake and other group members. Most songs are lightly accompanied by percussion, dulcimer, zither, saxophone, guitar, keyboards, strings and other instruments. Particularly wonderful are "Musa Venit Carmine," "Lhiannan Shee," "Umlahi" (with words and music by Blake), the haunting "Tam Lin," a sweet and lively cover of "Scarborough Fayre," the folk tune made famous by Simon & Garfunkel, the rhythmic "Come My Sweet," "This World Fareth As A Fantasye," and the ethereal "Away" which features Blake on lead vocal. "Mirabilis" is the 6th recording by the Baebes to grace our PAC catalog, and we have noticed 3 things--each album is excellent, each seems better than the last, and the Baebes are having as much fun dressing up and creating this magical music as we are, seeing and listening to them!

Songlist: Star of the Sea, Trovommi Amor, Temptasyon, San'c Fuy Belha Ni Prezada, All For Love of One, The Lament, Musa Venit Carmine, Kilmeny, Lhiannan Shee, Umlahi, Cittern Segue, Return of the Birds, Tam Lin, Scarborough Fayre, Come My Sweet, Mark Hur Var Skugga, The World Fareth As A Fantasye, Away

Mediaeval Baebes : Mistletoe and Wine

Review: Our definition of a Christmas gift would certainly include 8 beautiful women, dressed in mediaeval costume, singing songs adapted from the 11th through the 16th centuries, lightly accompanied such period instruments as Zither, Hurdygurdy, Harmonium, Citern, Glockenspiel and Astrowheel. We don't even know what a number of these instruments look like, but they sound wonderful! "Mistletoe" is classical and even sacred, but the Baebes' vital sound is anything but dry or academic. 15 tunes, some favorites: "The Holly & The Ivy," the traditional French "L'Amour de Moi," the dramatic "Salva Nos," "There Is No Rose of Swych Vertu," "Kimberly," the lovely "In Dulci Jubilo," "I Am Eve," "The Coventry Carol," the spirited "Undrentide" and the plaintive, haunting "Blow, Northern Wind." The beauty of the words and music are rivaled only by the sweet voices and harmonies!

Songlist: The Holly and the Ivy, Gaudete, Amour de Moi, Salva Nos, Glass Window, There Is No Rose of Swych Vertu, Kinderly, In Dulce Jubilo, Love Me Broughte, I Am Eve, Quan Vey La Layeta, The Coventry Carol, Underntide, Ecce Mundi Gaudium, Blow Northern Wind

Mediaeval Baebes : Salva Nos

Review: This is chant with a modern twist! Twelve alluring women, dressed in medieval garb, singing songs adapted from the Middle Ages. Some of the songs, such as the French dance tune "Ah Si Mon Moine," are lightly accompanied by period-appropriate instrumentation such as recorder or dulcimer. The title track, "Salvo Virgo Virginum," "Veni, Veni" and "Verbum Caro" are sung in Latin; several songs are sung in what must be construed to be Middle English. "The Coventry Carol" and "Gaudete" are familiar holiday songs to most; they are given simple treatment, as was typical of the music of the era, which was defined by monophonic textures or unadorned counterpoint. Much of the music performed was either religious in nature, and sung as part of the Catholic Mass, or, if secular, was an accompaniment for dancing. "Salva Nos" may be a classical recording, and as such it is entirely respectable, but the "Mediaeval Babes" have a vitality that is thoroughly contemporary.

Songlist: Salve Virgo Virginum, Now Springes the Spray, Ah Si Mon Moine, Adam Lay Ibounden, Foweles in the Frith, The Coventry Carol, Gaudete, An Adult Lullaby, Veni, Veni, Salva Nos, Verbum Caro, Lo, Here My Heart, Binnorie O Binnorie (Instrumental), This Ay Night, Miri It Is

Mediaeval Baebes : The Rose

Review: Nine lovely young women, clad in incredible Mediaeval costumes, look up at us from the extensive, beautiful, full-color liner notes of "The Rose," and we may say that they sound every bit as fine as they appear! Most songs are lightly accompanied by period instruments. 17 songs, of which we particularly enjoyed: "Glass Window," the a cappella "Slay Me Suddenly," the powerful "The Snake," "The Circle of the Lustful," the joyful "Laude Novella," the rhythmic "Dringo Bell," the title tune, "The Woods and The Rivers Are Silent," and the strange, but compelling "Spiriti" and "The Sour Grove." The Baebes carry us away to another time and reality, as impermanent as the Rose, and as beautiful!

Songlist: I am Eve, Glass Window, Slay Me Suddenly, The Snake, The Circle of the Lustful, Laude Novella, There Is No Rose of Swych Vertu, Lick the Maypole, Razreesh, Byrd one Brere, Dringo Bell, The Rose, L'amour De Moi, The Woods and The Rivers are Silent, Spiriti, The Sour Grove, Blow Northern Wind

Mediaeval Baebes : Undrentide

Review: The Mediaeval Baebes are 12 stunning young women who share with us their love of 11th to 16th century folk and sacred music (and the instruments and costumes of that period) on "Undrentide," their 4th excellent CD. Particularly noteworthy are the full-color, extensive liner notes, which are as beautifully designed and graphically exciting as any we've seen. 19 songs, some of which are mediaeval words put to music by Musical Director Katharine Blake. Some of our favorites: the title tune, "Quon vey la louzeta," the 15th century English "Besse Bunting," "Summerisle" (The Maypole Song), "Secreit Nicht," the raucous "Omnes gentes plaudite" (The Drinking Song), the poignant "Lanquan Li Jorn," "Dance of the Trolls" (instrumental) and the solemn "Palastinalied." Most songs are lightly accompanied. Another Baebes winner!

Songlist: Undrentide, Isabella, Quan vey la lauzeta, Besse Bunting, E volentieri, Cantiga, Summerisle (The Maypole Song), Averil, Secreit Nicht, Now welcom somer, Veni coronaberis, Omnes gentes plaudite (The Drinking Song), Lanquan li jorn, At a Springe-wel, Dance of the Trolls, Maiden in the mor lay, E volentieri (reprise), Palatinalied

Mediaeval Baebes : Worldes Blysse

Review: Who knew that English music from the 13th, 14th and 15th centuries could be totally hot? From their debut CD "Salva Nos," these dozen beautiful, young, costume-loving Baebes have been kicking butt, selling CDs and taking names on the classical charts. Their repertoire on "Worldes," and on the previous 4 very successful, excellent recordings features 13th through 15th century poetry set to original compositions by Katherine Blake and other group members, and some accompaniment (drums, piccolo, recorders, zither, dulcimer etc.). Before we forget, the full-color liner notes have wonderful photos and complement the entrancing music. 16 songs, some favorites are the round "Kimberly," the sweet "All Turns to Yesterday," the spirited, upbeat "Ecci Mundi Gaudium," the hypnotic "Waylaway," the harmonic gem "Alba," the rhythmic "Erthe Upon Erthe," "Pearl," the haunting "Swete Sone" and "C'est La Fin," and the bizarre, surrealistic "How Death Comes." The Baebes are hot, to look at and to listen to-and "Worldes Blysse" is their best recording yet!

Mirinesse : Hope Sings Eternal onsale

Review: Co-Conductors Beth Ann Bonnecroy and Rebecca Rottsolk specialize in healthy singing and development of singers' personal vocal technique, and this contributes to the free, beautiful sound their choirs achieve. Seattle's Mirinesse Women's Choir, founded in 2006, has thrilled audiences in and around northwest Washington with the lovely sound of healthy, classically-trained women's voices, singing a challenging and diverse repertoire of historic and contemporary tunes from around the world. "Hope Sings Eternal" is the fourth excellent CD by Mirinesse, an auditioned group of women, ages 21 to 70, who were honored to perform at ACDA Conventions in Oklahoma City and Seattle, and at the 2012 Elektra Women's Tapestry Festival in 2012. There is a generous collection of 16 cuts here, some favorites are Eleanor Daly's "A Hymn for St. Cecilia," the traditional "Peace Like a River," Jaakko Mantyjarvi's lively "Pseudo-Yoik Lite," Nicola Porpora's "Lauda Jerusalem," "Chant for Great Compassion" by Abbie Betinis, Antonio Sacchini's sweet, violin-accompanied "Te Dum Laudamus, mvt 3," Eric Whitacre's violin-accompanied "She Weeps Over Rahoon," Joan Szymko's "The Peace of Wild Things," David Sasso's flute and piano-accompanied "Night" and a live cut, the clarinet and piano-accompanied Yiddish Folksong "Ale Brider." Most of the songs are lightly accompanied by piano and/or other instruments. "Hope Sings Eternal" is a feel-good, soaring collection of perfectly sung tunes, and like us, we think you'll love Mirinesse!

Review: Since their founding in 2006, Mininess Women's Choir has been thrilling audiences in Seattle and around northwest Washington with the soaring, beautiful sound of classically-trained adult women's voices. They are an auditioned group of women, ages 21-70 who joyfully share their love of music, and strive, under the able direction of conductors Rottsolk and Bonnecroy, to attain the highest level of musicianship, artistry and individual vocal ability. There are 17 tunes here, some favorites are Haydn's "Laudate pueri Dominum," the traditional spiritual "Deep River," Z. Motet Singers : Sing Noel

Review: The Motet Singers are ten female vocalists who began in 1982 as a vocal sight-reading group under the direction of Hannelore Good. They sing a cappella music from classical, folk and popular genres, ranging from medieval to contemporary, and are known for their pure sound, seamless blending of voices and the eclectic variety of their music. There are 20 tracks here, from a fine "Salve Regina" by Javier Busto and several other contemporary and 20th century pieces, to short sacred works by Renaissance composers Morales and Palestrina, to some very nice 19th and 20th century arrangements of Spanish carols from various periods. Some of our favorites: "A la Puerta del Cielo," "Jesus Christ the Apple Tree" and "Ave Maria." There are drums on at least one cut. Everything relates to the Nativity theme, and there is a nice mix of unfamiliar winners with familiar favorites. An exceptional, beautifully sung CD!

Songlist: Sactus, O My Dear Heart, Three Spanish Carols, Ya Viene La Vieja, A La Puerta del Cielo, Riu, riu, chiu, Deck the Hall, White Christmas, Ave Maria, Lullay my liking, Jesus Christ the Apple Tree, O Magnum Mysterium, Maria durch ein' Dornwald ging, Over the Hill Maria Went, A La Nanita Nana, Good King Wenceslas, The Christmas Song, The Holly and the Ivy, The Three Kings, Some Children See Him, Salve Regina

Musae San Francisco : Alegria y Placer - A Musae Christmas

Review: "Alegria y Placer" is the second finely-crafted album of San Francisco's own 15-voice women's vocal ensemble, Musae. It showcases local composer Conrad Susa's "Carols and Lullabies: Christmas in the Southwest" for women's ensemble, harp, marimba, vibraphone and guitar. "Carols and Lullabies" is all in Spanish, and it features 10 songs of the 20 on the album. Each of the ten (accompanied) songs seems lovelier than the next, songs like "Alegria," "Los Posadas," the magical "Campana Sobre Campana," and the joyous "El Noi De La Mare." The others include standards such as "Silent Night," "Away in a Manger," "All Night, All Day," "I'll Be Home for Christmas" and "Deck the Hall." Other favorites are "This Endris Night," from a 15th Century English text, and a pair of lovely, wise folk songs, the lively "Vus Vet Zayn" and the gentle "Nada Te Turbe." There is quite a lot of accompaniment in the album, but the focus is on the beautiful voices. Musae is a delicious vocal smorgasbord from beginning to end, and all we have to do is treat ourselves. "Alegria y Placer" is one of the most enjoyable Christmas albums of the year!

Songlist: O, Mi Belen! , El Desembre Congelat, Alegria , A la Nanita Nana , Las Posadas, Campana sobre Campana, En Belen Tocan a Fuego, El Noi de la Mare, Chiquirriquitin, El Rorro, Silent Night , Away in a Manger , This Endris Night, O Magnum Mysterium , Gabriels Message, All Night, All Day, I'll Be Home for Christmas , Deck the Hall , Vus Vet Zayn, Nada Te Turbe

Musae San Francisco : Five

Review: In 2008-2009, celebrating its fifth year as one of the San Francisco Bay Area's premier women's vocal ensembles, 12-voice Musae presented its first ever Meet the Composer event, premiered works composed especially for them, hosted a grand party/fundraiser at the City Club, brought its annual December and May concerts to San Francisco, Berkeley and Tiburon, and recorded and released "five!" The ensemble describes its mission and vision as offering "a new experience of women's voices by combining musical artistry with an innovative and generous approach to performance." The 14 well-chosen cuts here begin and end with a soaring 12th Century chant by Hildegard von Bingen, "Karitas Habundat," there's Allister MacGillivray's lovely ballad "Song for the Mira," the heart-tugging Irish anthem "Danny Boy," and some wonderfully light and jazzy (and accompanied) renditions of "Mas Que Nada," "Canto de Ossanha," "Tempo de Amor" and "O Tico-Tico No Fuba." Next we have Graham Mayer's haunting, dissonant "When I Have Fears That I May Cease to Be," Princess Lili'uokalani's lovely "Ahe Lau Makani," Rene Clausen's powerful "Set Me as a Seal," Brian Holmes' soaring affirmation "I Shall Keep Singing" and Ryan James Brandau's beautiful "An Irish Blessing." Musae simply touches and inspires us with their "heartfelt and adventurous music." Enjoy!

Musae San Francisco : From Argentina to Appalachia

Review: Fifteen-strong San Francisco-based women's vocal ensemble Musae takes its name from the classic nine muses of Greek mythology, the original "ladies of song." Since its founding in 2004 Musae has performed its diverse and accessible repertoire at venues throughout the Bay Area, and has gained a reputation for stretching the boundaries of traditional repertoire for women's voices. Performing largely without a conductor, Musae is a musical collective where each singer may sing a range of vocal parts. "From Argentina to Appalachia" is Musae's impressive debut album, which features music from North America, Venezuela, Mexico, Argentina and Brazil. There are 11 songs here, "Selections from Como Tu," the bright, rhythmic, drum-accompanied "Mahk Jhi," "Selections from Como Tu," the soaring "Bright Morning Stars," the poignant traditional gem "Queen Jane," the lively "Las Amarillas," the heartbreaking love song "Te Quiero," the spiritual "There is a Balm in Gilead," the powerful "Salmo 150," the lovely "Duerme Negrito," the gorgeous, piano accompanied "Homeward Bound," the joyous "Hark I Hear the Harps Eternal" and finishing with the short but sweet "Coda." Review: Fifty Six-strong MUSE is a women's choir dedicated to musical excellence and social change. Believing that diversity is strength, they are feminist women of varied ages, races and ethnicities, with a range of life experiences, political interests and musical abilities. Heterosexual, lesbian and bisexual, these are women loving women united in song, seeking out pieces composed by women, songs that enhance women's voices, and a concert experience that entertains, inspires, motivates, heals and creates a spirit of community in their audience. Some of our favorites of these 20 songs were commissioned by MUSE, Holly Near's "Foolish Notion" and "I Ain't Afraid" (with the spot-on refrain about religious fundamentalism, "I ain't afraid of your praying, I'm afraid of what you do in the name of your god"), Therese Edell's "Emma," and Sweet Honey in the Rock's Beatrice Johnson Reagon's "Greed" (from "Anybody Here"). Other favorites are "Step By Step," "Three Walking Songs," Connie Kaldor's "Mother's Prayer," Jennifer Stasack's "Wage Peace," Daniel Galay's "Mayim Maya" and "Emily Remembers" by Shirley Eikhard. Peninsula Women's Chorus : Carols and Lullabies

Review: The 61-strong Peninsula Women's Chorus was established in 1966, and has been under the direction of Dr. Patricia Hennings since 1975, and the Christmas CD "Carols" is their fourth CD. The first 10 songs are a marvelous group called "Carols and Lullabies, Christmas in the Southwest" by Conrad Susa. A friend of Susa's showed him a collection of traditional Spanish carols he had sung as a boy in Arizona, and Susa put them together to form a narrative. combining homey, artful simplicity with Renaissance music, Songs like "Alegria" and the Andalusian song "Chiquirriquitin," with their lilting, dancing marimbas, and the lovely "A La Nanita Nana," are the gems of the CD. The second half of the CD takes us more in the direction of the sacred (Karai's "Hodie Christus natus est" and Missa Brevis' "Kyrie," "Sanctus" and "Agnus Dei"). Throw in "The Carol of the Rose," "Alleluia" and others, and you have a surprising, delightful Christmas CD!

Songlist: Oh, mi Belen!, El Desembre Congelat, Alegria, A la Nanita Nan, Las Posadas, Campana sobre Campana, En Belen Tocan a Fuefgo, El Noi de la Mare, Chiquirriquitin, El Rorro, Hodie Christus natus est, Missa Brevis, -Kyrie, -Sanctus, -Agnus Dei , Two selections from The Place of the Blest, -The Carol of the Rose, -Alleliuia, O Regem coeli, Christmas Intrada

Peninsula Women's Chorus : Earth Tones

Review: The sound of wind and water, the Sierra Nevada mountain range-late PWC artistic director Patricia Farris Hennings had a love for these things, and envisioned producing a CD of 20th century music that would transport the listener and inspire the soul. That CD is Earthtones, a musical journey through both nature and spirituality. Garrett Phillips' dramatic "Odysseus and the Sirens," Lojze Lebic's rhythmic "Urok," the fast-moving "Mouth Music," the traditional South African song "Nginani Na," and the lovely folk song "Shenandoah." 13 songs, some with light accompaniment and percussion. The PWC is one of our favorite women's choruses, and the perfectly recorded "Earthtones" is a wonderful tribute to their beloved director from 1975 to her passing in 2001.

Peninsula Women's Chorus : Nature Pictures onsale

Review: On this recording, the PWC celebrates a close relationship with prominent Estonian composer, Veljo Tormis. Influenced by his deep conviction that ancient song traditions reflect a close connection to nature, the prolific Tormis gives us the four seasons in 36 miniatures of intense choral imagery in his evocative song cycles, Looduspildid (Nature Pictures). We are proud to present the first American recording of this cycle! This eclectic recording continues the theme with Karl Korte's "Spring", Chen Yi's "Looking at the Sea" and Samuel Barber's "To be Sung on the Water." Also included are Edward Elgar's "The Snow" and Kenneth Leslie's lovely "Cape Breton Lullaby," a PWC favorite.

Review: Renowned for its versatility, Philomela has, ever since it was formed in 1984, adopted an innovative approach to choral expression under its conductor Marjukka Riihimaki. Its many awards have included the Grand Prix in the Chorus Review of Tampere Vocal Music Festival, and in recent years it has regularly been invited to sing at international festivals. Recently Philomela decided to explore the potential for adding new songs to the Finnish stock of Christmas carols without violating the traditional Christmas spirit. It therefore commissioned songs on the Christmas theme from composers it had worked with before and were familiar with Philomela's style. They also included some more traditional Finnish Christmas music as well and this resulting recording is a true a cappella pleasure.

Songlist: The earth is beautiful, Hail to Thee, most blessed, The snowy cottages sleep, A prayer for Christmas night, The Christmas bells, Silence, On Christmas Night, God whispers Christmas, Mary, most lowly of maidens, The sauna seeker, Breathe, my good horse, For God was born, Jesus rocked in a cradle, Cast care aside, Silent night, holy night, Song of Mary

Philomela Female Choir : Mieli

Review: Finland is full of folk traditions and epic poems which are great sources for Finnish music. Philomela performs pieces that draw on their rich literary culture. From the folk poetry of the town of Ilomantsi and the epic poem Kanteletar to the modern poetry of Jukka Itkonen, Viljo Kojo and Unto Kupiainen, composers Anna-Mari Kahara, Liisa Matveinen and others have created striking new music which is infused with the flavor of the Baltic region.

Songlist: Sadelaulu, Kantajani, Lemmennosto, Mieli, Etsija, Samsara, Ikava omia maita, Armahan kulku, Laulu perunoiden kiehuessa, En ma tullut niinkuin ennen, Mykka ero, Minne kauneus katosi, Jo meista ero tulevi, Armaan laheisyys

Saint Mary's College Women's Choir : Anima Mea!

Review: Pride of South Bend, Indiana's Saint Mary's College, this talented 35-voice choir commissions performs and publishes new works for women's voices (The Saint Mary's College Choral Series, published by earthsongs). Touring nationally to acclaim, "Anima" is the group's third excellent recording. 17 songs, Randal Stroope's "Magnificat," Imant Raminsh's "In The Beginning," Wm. Hawley's "Salve Regina," Paul Carey's "When I Bring You Colour'd Toys" and two by Gwyneth Walker, "Walk That Valley" and "So Many Angels!" are particularly wonderful. We also enjoyed a beautifully arranged "Over the Rainbow" and the group's trademark "The Bells of Saint Mary's." Some light accompaniment, and a nice liner notes booklet with information about the group and the songs. Lovely!

Santa Fe Women's Ensemble : Music Is Our Joy onsale

Review: Santa Fe Women's Ensemble has been singing together for New Mexico audiences since 1981, and has performed all its Christmas concerts in the acoustically magnificent Loretta Chapel in Santa Fe. The 14-voice group performs seldom-heard and challenging music from all periods, and has commissioned 22 new works. The pieces on this Christmas album are from Christmas and Spring Offering concerts from 2003 to 2005. Dr. Linda Raney has directed the SFWE since 1988 and is director of music and organist at the 1st Presbyterian Church in Santa Fe. There are 24 songs, some lightly accompanied, in this generous, eclectic collection. Jim Leininger's soaring "Deo Gracias," Karl Henning's "Alleluia in D," William Byrd's "Non Nobis, Domaine," Samuel Coleridge-Taylor's "What Can Lambkins Do," Daniel Gawthrop's dissonant "There Is Sweet Music," Pavel Chesnokov's "Otche nash" and Stuart McIntosh's "Baloo Baleerie" are lovely, rarely-heard, unexpected selections for a Christmas album, but they work. Michael Larkin's "Ave Maria," "Carol of the Drum," Palestrina's "Hodie Christus Natus Est," "Four Noels," "Il est ne, le divin Enfant," "Polish Christmas Carols" and Handl's "O magnum mysterium" are more familiar and no less enjoyable. "When the Savior Christ is born," "He is sleeping in a manger," "Sleep Thou, my Jewel," Keith Christopher's "Beyond Winter," Naomi Stephan's "Hodie" and Uzee Brown Jr.'s "Oh, the Savior's Comin, Hallelu" are all relatively new to us, lovely and fine. A beautiful, impressive, eclectic holiday collection from one of New Mexico's finest women's ensembles!

Songlist: Deo Gracias, 'Tis a Gift, Alleluia in D, Non Nobis, Domine, What Can Lambkins Do?, There Is Sweet Music, Kdyby tu Nic Nebylo, Otche nash, Baloo Baleerie, Ave Maria, Carol of the Drum, Hodie Christus Natus Est, Four Noels, Venez divin Messie, Il Es Ne le Divin Enfant, Dans Cette Etable, On ne Craint Plus Dans l'Univers, Polish Christmas Carols, When the Saviour Christ is Born, He is Sleeping in a Manger, Sleep, Thou, My Jewel, Hodie, Beyond Winter, Magnificat, O Magnum Mysterium, Oh, the Savior's Comin, Hallelu
