Vox Aurea Choir : LoRuLaiLee: Works for Children's Choir

Review: The children in the Vox Aurea choir, one of the leading Finnish choral groups, are fortunate to be under the direction of Pekka Kostianinen, one of the finest choral composers, and one who likes to test his ideas on his choir before committing them to paper. Finnish folk tradition has been an inspiration for many of these works, the language providing a rhythmic undercurrent and the sound of the words music in itself. "LoRuLaiLee" is a cross-section of Pekka's main works for children's choir. 12 tunes, some favorites: the title tune, "Kiurun tie," "Satakieli," "Jaakobin pojat," and "Pah' on olla paimenessa I and II." This is ethereal, soaring, stunning material, especially for a children's choir.

Songlist: Pyhan Franciscus Assislaisen rukous, Lorulailee, Kiuren tie, Tikanpolkka, Satakieli, Menninkaisen kuutamotanssit, Hiihtojuustoa syonyt lehma tuli hieman levottomaksi, Jaakobin pojat, Revontulet, Pah' on olla paimenessa I, Pah' on olla paimenessa II

Young People's Chorus of New York City : Dreamer

Review: New York City's YPC, under the acclaimed direction of Francisco J. Nunez, now involving over 1,300 boys and girls ages 7 to 18 in its after school programs, has been generating a lot of buzz in the children's chorus world. They have done this by commissioning new works for children's chorus, performing and winning gold medals internationally and recording acclaimed albums like "Dreamer," which features the Concert Chorus and Young Men's Chorus. Let us also not forget their full-color liner notes filled with beautiful pix of the kids in concert! There are 12 well-arranged, spirited, mostly accompanied tunes here, our favorites are the traditional Ghana song "Tue Tue," Faraualla's "Riki Tiki Tavi," the traditional Zulu song "Tshotsholoza," the powerful, percussion-accompanied Brazilian song "Tres Cantos Nativos dos Indios Krao," Stephen Foster's Folk classic "Beautiful Dreamer," Billy Joel's "Uptown Girl/Boy from New York City" medley, Paul Simon's "Bridge Over Troubled Water," Jim Papoulis and Director Nunez' "We Will Lift You Up" and John Lennon's "Imagine." We rarely hear children's choruses perform and record with such poise, power and chutzpa, but YPC has it. Buy and enjoy "Dreamer," and remember to remind yourself that these are kids!

Songlist: Tue Tue, Riki Tiki Tavi, Tschotsholoza, Tres Cantos Nativos dos Indios Krao, Natsu no omoide, Beautiful Dreamer, Tegami, Yell, Uptown Girl/ Boy from New York City, Bridge Over Troubled Water, We Will Lift You Up, Imagine

Young People's Chorus of New York City : When I Sing

Review: Founded by Artistic Director/Founder Francisco J. Nunez in 1988, the YPC has become among today's most celebrated and influential children's choruses, with performances and gold-medal winning competitions worldwide and acclaimed recordings from across the musical spectrum. Through its Transient Glory commissioning series of concerts, publications and CDs, YPC has expanded the repertoire for children's choruses with dozens of new works from composers that include Pulitzer Prize, Oscar and MacArthur "genius" grant winners. More than 1,200 boys and girls from ages 7 to 18 participate in YPC's core after school program in five divisions. "When I Sing," a spirited album variously accompanied by piano, bass, percussion, guitar, cello, flute, Latin percussion and viola, has 12 tunes, mostly by the Cantare Chorus, conducted by Elizabeth Nunez, with "El Cielo Cant Alegria" performed by the Prelude Chorus, "Shiru" by the Intermezzo Chorus, "Klee Wyck" performed by the Prelude Chorus, and "Stand Tall Children (The Activists)" performed by special guests Trenton Children's Chorus. Other favorites are the traditional Torres Strait Islands song "Sesere Eeye," Johann Strauss' "An der schonen blauen Donau," the Gospel Spiritual "Go Where I Send Thee," the title tune by Bill Henderson, Imant Raminsh's "Song of the Stars," "Criome Mi Madre" from 'Four Spanish Lullabyes' by Director Nunez, Jim Papoulis' "Stand Together" and George Weiss and Bob Thiele's "What a Wonderful World." Don't forget to check out the great color photos of the groups in action, in the liner notes. Dynamic arrangements, tremendous spirit, beautiful voices - "When I Sing" is a big winner on many levels!

Bob Chilcott : The Angry Planet

Review: The three works on this 2CD set further confirm Bob Chilcott's status as one of the world's most popular active choral composers. Five Days That Changed The World creates a strikingly vivid and personal account of each of five protagonist's experiences of a historical event. The Miracle of the Spring celebrates the pursuit, and eventual discovery, of water. The Angry Planet (2012) combines the precision and skill of the BBC Singers and The Bach Choir with the exuberance of a host of young persons and Children's choirs, including The Young Singers, London Youth Choir and Finchley Children's Music Group.

New Orleans Children's Chorus : Looking Back and Looking Up

Review: "Looking Back and Looking Up" is a sumptuous, 2-CD collection by the three talented branches of the New Orleans Children's Chorus, the Youth Chorale, Chamber Ensemble and Concert Chorus, all directed by Cheryl Dupont, with piano accompaniment by Kevin Caparotta. The Chorus is delighted to celebrate their 25th season, in spite of a 4-month hiatus due to Hurricane Katrina. There are 52 selections here on the two discs, impressive not only for the number, but for the difficulty and maturity of the pieces and the quality of the performances by this veteran Chorus. Attempting to choose favorites is not easy, for instance, disk one begins with David Elliot's joyous "When I Sing," Mozart's wonderful "Laudate Dominum," and Leslie/Calvert's heartstring-tugging "Song for the Mira;" each of these is a stone winner. We absolutely enjoyed Andre Thomas' "Rockin' Jerusalem," Bela Bartok's "Don't Leave Me," Imant Raminsh's "Song of the Stars," John Rutter's "Gaelic Blessing," Jule Styne's "Never, Never Land" and Z. Randall Stroope's "Inscription of Hope." On disk 2, we find S. Hatfield's "Nkose Sikeleli/Freedom is Coming," Rupert Lang's "Spirit of the Child," Ella Fitzgerald's "A-Tisket, A-Tasket," Randall Thompson's "A Girl's Garden," Schubert's "Lebenslust," Valerie Shields' "Eliyahu Hanavi," Daniel Gawthrop's "Sing Me to Heaven" and pianist Caparotta's "May the Road Rise to Meet You." A beautiful, sublime collection from this outstanding American children's chorus!

Songlist: When I Sing, Laudate Dominum, Song for the Mira, Kyrie from Missa Brevis, Pie Jesu from Requiem, Rockin' Jerusalem, Lift Thine Eyes, Don't Leave Me, O Aula Nobilis, Cantate Domino, Good Ale, Hiney Ma Tov, Song of the Stars, Old McDoodle, Tantum Ergo, Winter Under Snow is Weary, My Heart's Friend, Noel Des Enfants, The Gift to be Simple, Gaelic Blessing, Winter Changes, Never, Never Land, Cape Breton Lullaby, When I Set Out for Lyoness, Inscription of Hope, Do I Not Love Thee, Neighbor's Chorus, The Lord Bless You and Keep You, Nkose Sikeleli/Freedom is Coming, Spirit of the Child, and more

Cantemus Children's Choir : Bartok Choral Works

Review: Bartok's two- and three-part choruses for children's and female voices, his best-known choral cycle worldwide, appears at first sight to be distinct from the rest of his oeuvre. It is a textually inspired composition, whose arrival might seem unexpected in the period when he composed large instrumental works in the consolidated classical style, such as the String Quartet No. 5 (1934), the Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta (1936), and the Sonata for Two Pianos and Percussion (1937). Yet it sits easily in relation to his oeuvre as a whole.

Songlist: Tavasz, Ne Hagyj Itt, Joszag-igezo, Level az Otthoniakhoz, Jatek, Leanynezo, Hejja, Hejja, Karahejja, Ne Menj El, Van Egy Gyurum, Karica, Senkim a Vilagon, Ciposutes, Huszarnota, Resteknek Notaja, Bolyongas, Lanycsufolo, Legenycsufolo, Mihalynapi Koszonto, Leanykero, Keserves, Madardal, Csujogato, Banat, Ne Lattalak Volna!, Elment a Madarka, Parnas Tancdal, Kanon, Isten Veled!

Vox Aurea Choir : Tuhat Kertaa Tutat Vuotta

Review: Pekka Kostiainen (b.1944) is perhaps not known as well as other Finnish composers outside his native land. Although he wrote mainly instrumental music early in his career, he now concentrates on choral music. Pekka Kostiainen is the present conductor and composes extensively for them. Vox Aurea have excelled in performing his demanding but inspiring music, and taking it on their world tours. Tuhat kertaa tuhat vuotta (A thousand times a thousand years) is the most substantial a capella work on this 6th disc of Alba's "Kostiainen Conducts Kostiainen" series. It is a setting of a poem by Lauri Viita, one of the central characters of post-World War II literature in Finland, and narrates the origin of the world from an empty Cosmos, the building of mountains, ocean formation and the development of life. Softly vibrating tone-clusters suggest the void, magically expanding into the warm church acoustic, and a variety of eerie vocalisations including clicks, hisses and open-mouth tapping give way to firmer melodic lines. The altos, with more robust tone than the sweet sopranos, intone the verses in a modal runic chant style which derives from the Kalevala, the Finnish National epic, very close to the narrative style used by Sibelius in Kullervo and his epic tone poems. The choir are divided into four groups, two of sopranos and two altos, and the music moves antiphonally across the sound stage, suggesting the dynamic events at hand. This really is a tour-de-force of choral pictorialism, a miniature epic in its own right.

Songlist: 1000 x 1000 years (1991), To Finland's mothers (1998), There was a young lady, whose nose, There was an old man with a flute, There was an old lady of France, There was an old man of Cape Horn, There was a young lady, whose chin, There was an old person of Cromer, There was an old maid of Stroud, There was an old man in a tree, The roach, An eel is no adder, The perch, The salmon, The flounder waltz, The freshest fish, Glory be to God, Teach us to create, There they all sit in total silence, Why should I not sing?, If I should sing, I still have a song to sing, Dulce est, Nihil est perpetuum, Ut ameris, Ut fl atus venti, Acta est fabula, The country cat's secret fishy wish (2003), Lullaby, Vainamoinen's legacy (2006)
