Seattle Children's Chorus : Seasons of Song

Review: Founded in 1989 by artistic director Kris Mason, the Seattle Children's Chorus brings us the choral sounds of 200 boys and girls, in four levels of choirs, raised in song. "Seasons of Song" is a wonderful holiday collection of 22 songs from the SCC's most beautiful live performances, many of them lightly piano and flute accompanied. The voices of the beginning younger children (Brio) shine on tunes such as "All That Is Good," "Une Poule Blanche" and Colligan's "Now I Walk In Beauty." The intermediate chorus, Intermezzo, shows their stuff on Nalan's "Al Shlosha D'Varim," Chilcott's "Sing You Now" and "Bring a Torch, Jeanette Isabella;" and the advanced groups, Arioso and Camerata, easily handle more difficult, eclectic pieces like Pfautsch's "Consecrate the Place and Day," "Kyrie-Sanctus Benedictus from Mass No. 6" by Orban, the joyous a cappella "Sithi Jabula" by Nyberg, Nordqvist's "Wonderful Peace," Fissinger's "Make We Joy," Whitacre's "Lux Arumque" and Bach's "Prepare to Receive Him." These pieces are intermixed with more standard carols like "Ding Dong! Merrily on High," "Deck The Halls" and "The Little Drummer Boy" like treats in a holiday basket. "Seasons of Song" is a beautiful gift of sweet voices!

St. Marys Children's Choir : Winter Walk

Review: St. Marys Children's Choir & Festival Youth Singers was founded in St. Marys, Ontario in 1981 and since then, over 700 young people have participated in its training programs, winning many first places in Canadian Music Festivals Competitions. "Winter Walk" refers to a lovely evening stroll in "Stonetown," along the Thames River, Trout Creek and Little Falls, leading up to a Christmas display of lights in St. Marys' "The Flats." 23 lightly accompanied Christmas songs. Particularly nice (and new to our ears) to hear are songs written by Canadian composers: "What is this Lovely Fragrance" and "In Bethlehem Tonight" by Norman Nurmi," "Watts' Cradle Song" by Ruth Watson Henderson," "Tyrley, Tyrlow" and "I Heard the Bells" by Mark Sirett, and Eleanor Daley's "Rejoice and Sing this Christmas Morn." We also particularly liked the title tune, "Take a Winter Walk with Me" by Mary Donnelly, but there are many wonderful and rarely-heard tunes in this magical collection--that's a sure bet to put you in a Holiday mood, like an evening winter walk in Stonetown.

Songlist: Winter Sleighride, What Is This Lovely Fragrance , Let Us Dance And Sing , Wintersong , Watts' Cradle Song , Here's A Pretty Little Baby , Jesus Sleeping In The Manger , I'll Go To Bethlehem , Tyrley, Tyrley , I Heard The Bells , Joy Be Yours In The Morning , Come, Ye To Bethlehem , Brightest And Best , Baloo Lammy , Rejoice And Sing This Christmas Morn , I Hear The Bells , Behold That Star , In Bethlehem Tonight , How Far To Bethlehem , Take A Winter Walk With Me , Christmas Is A Feeling , Stars That Twinkle And Shine , We Need A Little Christmas

Tapiola Children's Choir : Dreams

Review: Musicality has paved the way for the expansive project that has made the Tapiola Choir's career a unique one. All the way from the 1960s the choir has worked hand in hand with many of Finland's finest composers. This work has generated a quite new choral repertoire of very high quality and - most important - completely lacking all the stock "music for children" mannerisms.

Songlist: Dreams op 85, Pater Noster, Vintern var hard, Suita Grammaticale op. 28, Agnus Dei , Meditatio super Agnum Dei, Halleluja, A

Review: Four decades ago in Finland, music teacher Erkki Pohjola had a vision of what a children's choir should sound like, and many competition victories, recordings and great performances later, we have this best-of CD by the 35-strong Tapiola Choir as evidence of his brilliance. Three times the tour has taken them literally around the world. Tens of foreign choirs have enjoyed a reciprocal welcome in Tapiola as a consequence. It will come as no surprise then that the choir has developed a substantial repertoire of songs from around the world, sung in the original languages. On this CD alone one can hear over half of the thirty-or-more languages in which the choir has sung. Special attention is always paid to accuracy of pronunciation.

Tapiola Children's Choir : Tapiola Choir Christmas

Review: Over three decades have passed since the founding of the Tapiola Choir, then known as the Tapiola Children's Choir. Shortly after their founding, in 1973 they released "Tapiolan Joulu" ("Christmas With Tapiola"). If you have ever heard that classic album you can't help but be moved by the bell-like chime and purity of the children's voices. On this new Christmas recording the Tapiola Choir, long since recognized as an international treasure, creates a richer, more mature sound with the addition of a couple of dozen young adult voices belonging to the 'seniors.' The choir's founder, Prof. Erkki Pohjola wished to share the experience of creating this recording with former members because this is to be his last as conductor and director of the choir. Additionally, the breadth of the arrangements was enhanced by use of orchestration which never occludes the beauty of the choir and special guest Jorma Hynninen, the celebrated Finnish operatic baritone. The recording begins with an a cappella version of the Australian folk song, "Mary, Handmaiden of the Lord" which was the first three part song ever sung by the original "Choir of the Lower Forms of Tapiola Secondary School." Progressively the song list increases in festivity, youthful fun predominates, and then imperceptibly the feeling returns to the original spirit of Christmas until, finally the choir closes the recording with the a cappella "At Christmas, God Came on Earth." This beautiful recording is not only a testimonial to the young singers of Tapiola but a superb passing of the musical baton to the new conductor, Kari Ala-Pollanen.

Songlist: Maria, Herran piikanen, , God Rest You Merry Gentlemen, O Holy Night / Oi, jouluyo, The Joy of Giving, Kulkuset fantasia / Fantasy on Jingle Bells, Tonttujen joulukuusi / Elves around the Christmas Tree, Nigra sum / I Am Black, Noel des enfants qui n'ont plus de maisons, Kuului laulu enkelten, Go, Tell It on the Mountain, Foudu, satakiel, Katso, ihme taivainen, En etsi valtaa, Ioistoa, Maa on niin kaunis, Jouluna Jumala syntyi, Joulukranssi kuudella kielella, - Joulun kellot / Softly, Softly, - Nu tandas tusen juleljus / A Thousand Candles Burning Bright, - Tiliseb tiliseb aisakell / Jingling, Jingling Sleigh Bells Ring, - Leise rieselt der Schnee / Silent Sleeps the Singing Snow, - Mele kalikimaka, - Entre le boeuf.../There in the Hay of the Ox's Stall, - Arkihuolesi kaikki heita / Cast off Thy Everyday Cares

Trapp Family Singers : Christmas with the Trapp Family Singers

Review: Who doesn't know the dramatic and true story of the Von Trapp Family, who escaped from their Austrian homeland under the Nazi occupation? This singing family relocated to America, where they performed and recorded for many years. No novelty act, the ensemble, under the direction of conductor Dr. F. Wasner, sings first-rate a cappella arrangements (with the exception of "Ihr Kinderlein Kommet") of European carols, such as the Italian "La Canzone Di Natale," the Tyrolean "Es Hat Sich Heut Eroffnet" and the Polish "Shepherds Come A-Running." Some of these melodies will be familiar to American audiences, but some will not, which is part of their charm. This 1950's era mono recording is clean, present, and immediate; the vocal blend of the group is so natural and perfectly pitched, it requires nothing to complete it.

Songlist: Deck the Halls, Es Ist Ein Ros Entsprungen, Hirten, Wachet Auf!, Zu Bethlehem Geboren, A La Nanita Nana, El Est Ne, Le Divin Enfant, La Canzone Di Natale, Es Hat Sich Heut Eroffnet, Jesus, Jesus, Rest Your Head, Shepherds Come A-Running, Lobt Gott Ihr Christen All Gleich, Es Wird Scho Glei Dumpa, Nu Ar Det Jul Igen, Ihr Kinderlein Kommet, Der Scheibendudler, Carol of the Drum, Deine Wangelen, Weihnachtslied (Silent Night)

Trapp Family Singers : Original Trapp Family Singers

Review: Everyone has heard the story of the Trapp Family, as dramatized in the beloved musical, "The Sound of Music." After their discovery by German opera singer Lotte Lehmann in 1936, they became a sensation in their native Austria. Hitler's invasion in 1938 caused them to accept the offer of an American tour, and they became exiles from their native land. The recordings preserved on this CD were made upon their arrival in New York, continuing into 1941. The Trapp family repetoire consisted of folk songs, madrigals, motets and classical chorales. Later, they began a tradition of annual Christmas concerts, and several of those carols are included in this collection. The recorder is a featured instrument on "Intrade, Sarabande and Gigue," a series of lively dances from the baroque era, and "Two Old Netherland Dances." The remaining twenty selections are a cappella and show that the Trapp Family was no novelty act. With the aid of their conductor and arranger Dr. Franz Wasner, their technique became consummately professional, their intonation and blend first-rate, and their performances confident and assured. Incomparable.

Songlist: Innsburck, Ich Muss Dich Lassen, Wohlauf ihr Lieben Gaste, Landsknechtstandchen, Feinslieb, Du Hast Mich gefangen/ tanzen und springen, Away In A Manger, Main Einigs A , Der Spate Abend, Two Old Netherland Dances, Il Bianco e Dolce Cigno, Zu Bethlehem Geboren, Die Martinsgans/ Ein Hennlein Weiss, God Rest Ye Merry, Gentelmen, Wach Auf, Wach Auf, Intrade, Sarabande & Gigue, Waldensnacht, Du Wunderkuhle, Eriskay Love Lilt, Come, Heavy Sleep, Lavanthal, Lavanthal/ Die Auglein Voll Wasser, In Einem Kuhlen Grunde, Vom Himmel Hoch, O Haupt Voll Blut und Wunden, Chorale, Guten Abend, Gut' Nacht, op. 41

Treble Chorus of New England : Angels Are Everywhere!

Review: Angels are Everywhere! is a recording of great music written for children's voices and features the Trebel Chorus of New England. The title piece was commissioned by the Glen Ellyn Children's Chorus, the Phoenix Boys' Choir and the American Boy Choir in 1993 with words and music by Daniel Pinkham. The CD also includes the cycle "Friday Afternoons" which Benjamin Britten wrote to assist music lessons.
