Men's Choral Recordings

Men’s choral music spans the centuries, and well-sung choral music brings a lush joy to the ear, whether it is sacred or secular, plainsong, vocal chamber music, chant, madrigals, folk songs or even the music of U2! Many strong composers have written for the male ensemble over the centuries, and choirs today are singing the work of talents as diverse as Rutter and Henry VIII. Men’s ensembles around the world – and we carry recordings from such diverse nations as Estonia, Finland, Canada and Russia, to name just a few – deliver glorious, powerful work.

Saint Thomas Choir of Men and Boys : A Cappella II

Review: This disc, featuring a variety of sacred works by 20th-century composers and arrangers, fully measures up to this revered choir's reputation for first-rate singing and for being what can only be described as America's finest English cathedral choir. Everything from the bright, prominent treble tone to the enunciation and inflection--even the choir's vestments--comes from the long-established Anglican tradition, and under the careful tutelage of director Gerre Hancock these choristers have nothing to apologize for, either in technique or in musicianly command of the repertoire. The repertoire includes several traditional favorites--Stanford's Latin motets, for example--along with works closely associated with Saint Thomas, including choir-member Anthony Piccolo's beautiful anthem Heaven and Heart, T. Tertius Noble's Go to Dark Gethsemane, and Hancock's own arrangement of the Spiritual Deep River. Along the way we encounter the intensely overwrought and way-too-long Magnificat by Alan Gray and the tedious-and-fussy Vox dicentis by Edward Naylor. Stanford's gorgeous but extremely tricky motets provide many moments of listening pleasure but also reveal their challenges as the choir trebles struggle with intonational control in several places, especially in the somewhat cumbersome and awkwardly written eight-part Coelos ascendit hodie (no choir sings this piece well) and in the opening and closing bars of Beati quorum via.

Songlist: Eternal Light - Sowerby, Go To The Gethsemane - Noble, A Setting Of Collect - Parker, Heaven And Heart - Piccolo, Draw Us In The Spirit's Tether - Ossewaarde, Three Motets - Stanford, Magnificat - Gray, Nunc Dimittis - Wood, "Tis The Day Of Resurrection - Wood, Vox Dicentis: Clama - Naylor, Sonate En Ut Mineur - Gui;mant, Deep River , The Good News, Ezeckiel Saw De Wheel

Schnittpunktvokal : A Cappella Christmas - Traditional Carols from Austria

Review: The Alpine folk song rests on harmony (Viergesang), and the Christmas carol in particular represents a heritage which has not only to be studied but also to be "lived." The vocal quartet Schnittpunktvokal does both, and the result is a compelling shaping of simple, penetrating, and always moving music. What makes this recording of authentic Austrian folk music so unique is not only the ensemble's very special style but also the warmth and clarity of the four male voices, which blend together without losing their individual character, with everything combined with perfect intonation.

Songlist: Hiatz Kimp a Wundabare Zeit, Is Schon Still, Is Schon Kalt, Immert Amal, Was Sagg Denn Da Wind, Tiaf Eine Is Wintar, Schean Still Fallt Da Schne, Zund an Es Liacht, Liabs Christkindl Tua Wachsn, Es Bluhn Drei Rosen Auf Einem Zweig, Josef Und Maria, Vom Himmel Scheint a Liachter Schtean, Ubar Die Stapflan, Andachtsjodler, Schlaf, Schlaf, Holdseliges Jesulein, Mir Kummts Auf Da Welt Heut So Wundalalt Vur, Krumpa Haxmartin, Wo Seind Denn Heint Die Haltabuam, O Bruada, Schau Hin, Was Muass Heute Nacht Wohl Sein Gschehgn, 4000 Jahr Verflossen Sind, Werst Mei Liacht Ume Sein, Was Wird Uns Denn Bringen Das Neue Jahr

Singing Statesmen : A Testament

Review: The Singing Statesmen celebrated their 40th Anniversary Season in 2005-6 as one of the premier university male choruses in the US. Founder Morris D. Hayes sought to create an outstanding choral ensemble for male voices and directed the choir from 1966 to 1988, followed by Bruce G. McInnes from 1988 to 1990, and Gary R. Schwartzhoff from 1991 to the present. The Statesmen have performed to appreciate audiences at ACDA Conventions, and on five International Concert Tours, including one to Rio de Janieiro, Brazil in 2005. These 16 songs appropriately begin with "The Star Spangled Banner" and J.A. Parks' "O Home Beloved," Randall Thompson's 4 part "The Testament of Freedom," Franz Biebl's "Pater Noster," Benjamin Britten's "The Ballad of Little Musgrave and Lady Barnard," Z. Randall Stroope's "Dies Irae," Lee Hoiby's a cappella "Private First Class Jesse Givens," "Battle Hymn of the Republic," a pair of African-American Folksongs, "The Morning Trumpet" and "Poor Man Lazrus" and "By the Sword"/"Sons of Dixie" by Frank Wildhorn/Tom Anderson. You will surely enjoy the wonderful, rich harmonies and powerful lyrics from this spirited, renowned veteran Collegiate ensemble! There is some piano accompaniment.

Sistine Chapel Choir : Christ Is Born

Review: "Christ Is Born" and "Christ Is Risen" were two highly-acclaimed films of the late-1950s that captured the Sistine Choir in concert within the Sistine Chapel. This album is a collection of the sacred songs recorded for the soundtracks to the films in 1957. 10 songs, starting with "Die Santificatus (Day Sanctified)," by Palestrina, who also composed "Hodie Christius Natus Est (Today, Christ Is Born)" and "Improperia (Reprove)," "Pastores Dicite (Speak, Shepherds)," by the Spanish master Morales, Vittoria's "Tenebrae (Darkness)," Gregorian chants "Rorate Caeli (Song of Advent)" and "Victimae Paschali (Easter Victim)," Bartolucci's "Ave Maria, Vergine Fiore (Hail Mary, Virgin Flower)," "Vexilla Regis (King's Insignia)," and the traditional hymn "Adeste Fideles (O Come All Ye Faithful)" complete the program. St. Ephraim Male Choir : Listz for Male Choruses

Review: A considerable portion of Liszt's oeuvre is made up of compositions for male choir, which have to date not truly gained their rightful place in the choral repertoire. Of the more than 60 varied male choruses, composed a cappella or accompanied by piano, organ, a few instruments, or orchestra, often extant in various complete, printed versions, a great number have not been recorded even once. The Saint Ephraim Male Choir, led by conductor Tamas Bubno, has set itself the task of programming in concerts, recording and releasing on CD all Liszt's works for male choir and ensembles of male voices, both the sacred and the secular.

St. Ephraim Male Choir : Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom

Review: On the turn of the 20th century Greek Catholic sacred music held sway over much of the music scene of Sub-Carpathia, in the north-eastern part of Hungary. A great many members of the Byzantine-rite Rusyn clergy, as well as Hungarians, were well versed in music, which was put to use in maintaining high artistic standards in the daily liturgy. One significant master of this period was Joann (Janos) Boksay (1874 - 1940), a Greek Catholic celebrant, composer and church choirmaster. His output includes pieces for piano, dramatic incidental music and children's operas, but his most important works are considered to be his ten Divine Liturgies of St John Chrysostom, four of which have survived. The most widely known one is the Mass in C major, composed in 1900, whose simple and pure melodies have earned it folk-hymn status among the Greek Catholics in the Munkacs (Munkacevo, Ukraine), Eperjes (Presov, Slovakia), and Hajdudorog eparchies.

Songlist: Litany Of Peace, 1st Antiphon, Glory Be To The Father, Come Let Us Worship, Trishagion, Gospel, Litany Of Supplication, Cherubimic Hymn, Litany Of The Offertory, The Creed, The Mercy Of Peace, Holy, Holy, Holy, We Praise You, Hymn To The Blessed Virgin, The Lord's Prayer, One Is Holy, Blessed Is He, Thanksgiving Hymn, Dismissal, For Many Years

The Viking Chorus, founded in 1935, is a group of 60 first-year student men who perform motets, cantatas and anthems, as well as contemporary choral pieces, spirituals, and folksongs. The 26 songs of "When Love is Found" are largely classical sacred music such as Hovland's "The Glory of the Father," Pitoni's "Adoramus te" (We Adore Thee), Byrd's "Agnus Dei," Petrich's "First Born of Creation," Biebl's "Ave Maria" (Angelus Domini), and Gretchaninoff's "Only Begotten Son," the title tune and "Our Father." Suspicious Cheese Lords : Maestro di Capella - Music of Elzear Genet (Carpentras) onsale

Review: Elzear Genet (c. 1470-1548) sang in the papal chapel under Pope Julius II, and thereafter in the court of the French king Louis XII. On November 5, 1513, he became the first composer to be named Master of the Papal Chapel. Working for Pope Leo X, who, in the Medici tradition, was a lavish patron of the arts, Genet's musical output became exclusively sacred. Although Genet was the first composer to publish his collected works, his music has unjustly fallen into near-oblivion. By the late 16th century, Genet's works had been replaced with newer settings by Palestrina and other composers. Sadly, there are no documented performances of his music again until the early 19th century.

Songlist: Gabriel angelus, Tibi Christe, Virgo prudentissima, Jubilate Deo, Crucem tuam adoramus, Magnificat, Haec est illa dulcis rosa, Missa "Se mieulx ne vient", Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, Agnes Dei, Pange lingua

Suspicious Cheese Lords : Missa L'homme arme - Sacred Music of Ludwig Senfl onsale

Review: Missa L'homme Arme: Sacred Music of Ludwig Senfl is the Cheese Lords' second CD, and a world premeire recording of the music of Ludwig Senfl (1486-1543). Senfl was born in Basel, Switzerland around 1486. At an early age he joined the court chapel of the Holy Roman Emperor Maximilain I, as a choirboy. In Maximilian's chapel, Senfl met and studied with the court composer Henrich Isaac, and after a brief time away from the chapel, returned as an adult singer and Isaac's principle assistant. After Maximilan's death in 1519, his chapel was disbanded and Senfl's history is less clear. Eventually, he joined the chapel of Duke Wilhelm IV of Bavaria, where he remained until his death in 1542 or 1543. Senfl was a prolific composer with an output of over 100 mass settings, 50 vespers settings, and over 100 sacred motets. The vast majority of Senfl's music is unrecorded. The Cheese Lords are proud to present this selection of Senfl's sacred work, featuring a mass based on the popular French tune L'homme arme.

Songlist: Te Deum, Miserere mei Deus, Virgo prudentissima / Fortuna desperata, Quid vitam sine te, L'homme arme, Missa "L'homme arme", Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, Agnus Dei

Svanholm Singers : Veljo Tormis: Works for Men's Voices

Review: Although Veljo Tormis is the second-most-famous modern Estonian composer (the most famous being Arvo Part), his music remains scarcely known in the west. Unlike Part, Tormis' work hasn't undergone a major stylistic shift; he has remained committed to using Estonian folk song as a basis for his music from the beginning of his career. He's not simply an arranger or transcriber, though. The folk influence may be overt, or principles of its structure and distinctive characteristics may be submerged in a thoroughly contemporary soundworld. Even the most clearly modern pieces have a sense of emotional gravity and primal power that set them apart as the work of an individual musical thinker. Choral music has always been Tormis' preferred medium, and he has written over 500 choral works. This small sampling of works for (or arranged for) men's voices demonstrates the power and originality of his imagination. There is a sense in which his work seems a-historical, the product of a real maverick; it's hard to pinpoint any classical tradition or earlier composers from which his sound might have been derived. Composers since have made some of Tormis' qualities sound commonplace, but he has been writing like this throughout his long career. Central to his distinctiveness is his use of texture and rhythm, as elements more prominent than melody or harmony; the melodies may not stay with you, but the power of the driving pulse and eccentric textures is unforgettable. Many of the works include what would technically be considered extended vocal techniques, but in this context sound more primal than modern -- panting, shouting, chanting, whispering, and whistling. Tormis also uses a hugely resonant shamanic drum in several pieces, and it contributes to the ritualistic, primitive atmosphere that some of his work creates. One of the most effective pieces recorded here is also his most famous, Raua needmine (Curse Upon Iron), which has a profound monumentality and a sense that a mysterious rite is being enacted. Svanholm Singers, directed by Sofia Soderberg Eberhard, performs this music as if it had it in its blood. The group shows remarkable assurance in singing not only with obvious discipline, but with the wildness the music requires. The sound is full, present, and immediate. Fans of modern choral music who aren't familiar with Tormis' music owe it to themselves to explore it, and this collection makes a terrific place to start.

Songlist: An Aboriginal Song, I'd Like to Sing a Song, Stars, Crosswind, Our Shadows (Once We Will Reappear), Forging the Sampo, The Bishop and the Pagan, Incantation for a Stormy Sea, Men's Song, Bundling Song, Betrothal Visit Song, Song of the Turkish War, Serf's Song, Dancing Song, Curse Upon Iron

Tempus Fugit : Nebbiu - Sacred Songs of Corsica

Review: This recording groups together religious songs from the Nebbiu area of Corsica. It includes prayers for Holy Week, a sixteenth century Genoese processional song and the "Vultum Tuum Mass." An ancient Roman Mass, this piece has many Byzantine elements and was found in Corsica as early as the seventh century. It was suppressed for nearly a thousand years due to a Roman prohibition in the eleventh century. A very spiritual piece, it is said to possess a miraculous quality. This is a unique recording due to the unusual vocal technique of the singers as well as the innovative repertoire from the Nebbiu region.

Songlist: Veni sancte spiritus, L'orme sanguine, Suda sangue, Perdono, Stabat Mater, Miserere, Velum Templi, Vexilla Regis, Christus vincit, Alleluia no nobis, Messe Vultum tuum - Introitu, Messe Vultum tuum - Kyrie, Messe Vultum tuum - Agnus Dei, Miserere

Tredegar Orpheus Male Choir : the Voice Of Wales

Review: The rich blend of Tenors, Baritones and Basses in the male voice choir has an appealing homogeneity and power, one that has flourished in Wales hymn-singing festivals for centuries. 15 memorable tunes: "God Bless the Prince of Wales," written in 1862 gets the CD off to a rousing start, and the two best-loved Welsh hymns "Cvm Rhondda" (Guide me, O Thou Great Jehovah"), and "The Lord Is My Shepherd," now known as the tune "Crimond" are well done here. "Fantasia on Famous Welsh Airs," the dramatic "The Lost Chord," "See, The Conquering Hero Comes," "The Ash Grove," the exciting "Hunting the Hare," and two spirituals, "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot" and "Nobody Knows The Trouble I See Lord," are particularly wonderful. Some organ, harp and piano accompaniment. The Tredegar Orpheus Male Voice Choir, directed by Ieuan Davies, and the Rhos Orpheus Male Voice Choir are as good as they come, with a visceral, ancient wall of sound that hits us where we live. "Voice of Wales" is powerful and wonderful!

Songlist: God Bless The Prince Of Wales, David Of The White Rock, The Rising Of The lark, All Through The Night, Hunting The Hare, Fantasia On Famous Welsh Airs, The Lost Chord, See The Conquering hero Comes, The ash Grove, Swing Low Sweet Chariot, Guide Me O Thou Great Jehovah, Crimond, Praise Ye The Lord, Nobody Knows The Trouble I See Lord, And The Glory Of The Lord Shall Be Revealed

Review: Table songs are the musical expression of the Georgian cult of wine, and the Tsinandali Choir are famous for their stirring and powerful renditions of this music. Different occasions and events bring Georgians together around their large wooden tables to drink, eat and sing - a birth, a death, a marriage or a holiday. Singing is as natural a part of everyday life as breathing! The Tsinandali Choir is carrying on this ancient tradition in the deep, sonorous polyphonic style of Georgian music.

Various Artists : Mbube Roots Zulu Choral Music from South Africa 1930's - 1960s

Review: This recording is a historical wonder, particularly valuable for putting the music of Ladysmith Black Mambazo in context. One of the obvious distinctions of mbube groups were who sang soprano parts in the absence of women. The earliest of the recordings is from 1932 and the history extends to 1967, ending with the song, "Umama Lo" by Ladysmith Mambazo which is a transcription of their first radio appearance. They didn't record their first album until six years later. The other most notable recording is the 1939 recording of "Mbube" by Solomon Linda's Original Evening Birds. This was the song which became "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" when western artists tried to phonetically recreate what they heard from the record. Oh well. Other notable groups are the King Star Brothers, Crocodiles and the Shooting Stars.

Songlist: Jim Takata kanfani, hewul kwaqaqamba anathambo, ina ma wala, kuyekeleni kukule, mbube, ngazula emagumeni, anoku gonda, yek' emerabini, izindaba ezinkulu zika "Kawa", hamba stutubaker, ngi-e kaya, nsigoduke, akasangibhaleli, cothoza mfana, mus' ukuqubuda, umama lo

Various Artists : Welsh Choirs Sing Folk

Review: Two great Welsh tradition have been brought together on this recording: the Male Choir tradition on the one hand, and the wealth of traditional folk songs on the other. Two traditions of the Welsh people, - two "folk" tradition in the true sense of that over-used word. It is very difficult to say precisely how old these songs are, though it is evident tat some are considerable older than others. They mainly reflect the rural way of life, though there are more recent and urban connections to songs such as "Ffarwel i ddociau Lerpwl" ("Farewell to Liverpool docks") and "Sosban Fach", known the world over as Llanelli's rugby anthem. Two recurring themes are romance and the battle for Welsh independence, and there are also a lullaby and children's songs such as "Hen fenyw fach Cydweli" ("The old woman of Kidwelly"). 24 traditional songs in all, - arranged for Male Choirs in four-part harmony.

Songlist: Deryn Y Bwn O'r Banna , Bugeilio'r Gwenith Gwyn , Tair Alaw Werin Gymreig-Rew-Di-Ranno/Mae 'Nghariad I'n Fenws/Hela'r Sgyfarnog , Y Pren Ar Y Bryn , Tros Y Garreg , Fantasia On Famous Welsh Airs , Si Hei Lwli 'Mabi , Ffarwel I Ddociau Lerwpl , Dacw 'Nghariad , Gwn Dafydd Ifan , Lisa Lan , Hen Ferchetan , Ar Lan Y Mor , Cadwyn O Alawon-Ar Hyd Y Nos/Dafydd Y Garreg Wen/Sosban Fach , Titrwm, Tatrwm , Hen Fenyw Fach Cydweli ,

Washington Men's Camerata : Brothers Sing On!

Review: The ancient art of men's choral singing began early in the history of western music. From its roots in Jewish liturgical chant and the monastic chants of the early Christian church, through groups of troubadours in Medieval France and the male singing societies of nineteenth-century England and Germany, the male chorus has a rich and varied history, influenced by many of the world's most important cultures and religions. In modern times, male chorus traditions are carried on by collegiate and community choruses in dozens of countries around the world. With this program, the Washington Men's Camerata begins a series of recordings of some of the timeless gems of our repertoire, with the hope that this lasting testament to the power of men's voices raised in song will serve to inspire future generations of singers.

Songlist: Brothers, Sing On , Drink To Me Only With Thine Eyes , The Pasture , De Animals A-Comin , Waitin' For The Dawn Of Peace , Down By The Sally Gardens, Ave Maria, If Ye Love Me , Spaseniye Sodelal , Song Of Peace , Ride The Chariot , The Long Day Closes, Vive L'Amour, Down In The Valley , What Shall We Do With The Drunken Sailor , Shenandoah , Battle Hymn Of The Republic

Washington Men's Camerata : Masters In This Hall - Christmas Music For Men's Chorus

Review: Thomas Beveridge and the Washington Men's Camerata give glorious and joyful performances on this Christmas recording. The triumphant title piece "Masters in this Hall" begins with the chorus and a soft drum beat that eventually grows to include organ and virtuosic piano. This and most of the other pieces are arranged by Beveridge, who is very accomplished in writing for men's voices. Juxtaposing the male sound are several soprano solos sung by Rosa Lamoreaux including "The First Mercy" by Peter Warlock. Other highlights include Beveridge's arrangement of "The Shepherds' Farewell" from Berlioz's L'Enfance du Christ and Biebl's peaceful "Ave Maria."

Songlist: Carol of the Drum, The First Mercy, O Maria, Diana Stella, The Three Holy Kings, Lo, How a Rose e'er Blooming, The Shepherds' Farewell, Ave Maria, O Tannenbaum/Adeste Fideles, Wassail Song, The Holly and the Ivy, Carol of the Birds, March of the Kings, O Holy Night, Carol of the Bells, Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring, El est ne, Quittez Pasteurs, In Dulci Jubilo/Angels We Have Heard on High

YL Male Choir : Sibelius

Review: YL Male Voice Choir was founded in 1883 under the auspices of the Helsinki University. Two years later Jean Sibelius became a student at the conservatory in Helsinki, and soon what would become a long and fruitful collaboration began. When the composer made his breakthrough with Kullervo in 1892, singers from YL formed the backbone of the choir, and when he started to write for male choir a cappella the following year his first work was Venematka (The Boat Journey), composed for the choir's tenth anniversary. After that, a majority of Sibelius's most famous works for male choir were commissioned and premiered by YL, which has never ceased to be regarded as the foremost exponent of Sibelius's music for male choir - the voice of Sibelius! The present program includes both a cappella works and works for male choir and orchestra, in which YL is supported by Lahti Symphony Orchestra conducted by Osmo Vanska. It takes us through a variety of moods and themes: from the brief and very moving Sydameni laulu - a lullaby for a dead child - to Tulen synty (The Origin of Fire), a re-telling of the ancient Kalevala legend of how fire came into the world, as well as the patriotic sentiments of Vapautettu kuningatar (The Captive Queen) and, of course, the hymn from Finlandia, probably Sibelius's most famous composition, here in a choral version.

Songlist: Sortunut Aani, Terve Kuu, Venematka, Saarella Palaa, Metsamiehen Laulu, Sydameni Laulu, Rakastava, Koskenlaskijan Morsiamet, Tulen Synty, Vapautettu Kuningatar, Hymn, Kuutamolla, Isanmaalle, Veljeni Vierailla Mailla, Har Du Mod, Laulu Lemminkaiselle, Jaakarien Marssi, Till Havs, Humoreski, Ne Pitkan Matkan Kulkijat, Finlandia-Hymni

Choir of King's College, Cambridge : A Festival Of Nine Lessons And Carols

Review: The Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols was first held on Christmas Eve 1918. It was planned by Eric Milner-White, who at the age of thirty-four had just been appointed Dean of King's after experience as an army chaplain which had convinced him that the Church of England needed more imaginative worship. (He devised our Advent Carol Service in 1934, and was a liturgical pioneer and authority during his twenty two years as Dean of York.) The choir included sixteen trebles as laid down in King Henry VI's statutes, but until 1927 the men's voices were provided partly by Choral Scholars and partly by older Lay Clerks, and not, as now, by fourteen undergraduates. Almost immediately other churches adapted the service for their own use. A wider frame began to grow when the service was first broadcast in 1928 and, with the exception of 1930, it has been broadcast annually, even during the Second World War. Sometime in the early 1930s the BBC began broadcasting the service on overseas programmes. It is estimated that there are millions of listeners worldwide, including those to Radio Four in the United Kingdom. In recent years it has become the practice to broadcast a digital recording on Christmas Day on Radio Three, and since 1963 a shorter service has been filmed periodically for television.

Songlist: Once In Royal David's City, Bidding Prayer, Up! Good Christen Folk And Listen, The Truth From Above, First Lesson, Adam LAy Ybounden, Second Lesson, Sussex Carol, In The Bleak Mid-Winter, Third Lesson, In Dulci Jubilo, God Rest You Merry Gentlemen, Fourth Lesson, A Tender Shoot, The Lamb, Fifth Lesson, Joy's Seven, Gabriel's Lesson, Sixth Lesson, Dormi Jesu, Riu Riu Chiu, Seventh Lesson, The Fayrfax Carol, While Shepards Watched, Eighth Lesson, I Saw Three Ships, Illuminare Jerusalem, Ninth Lesson, O Come All Ye Faithful, Prayer And Blessing, and more

This excellent sounding 2 Disc set is a compilation of some of the best Christmas carols the choir has performed over the years. Each carol is performed to perfection but there are still some exceptionally memorable moments. As always, the opening boy soprano solo in "Once in royal David's City" will give you chills, the arrangement of "In The Bleak Midwinter" will melt your heart, and the gorgeous harmonies of "Gabriel's Message" will remind you of the true meaning of Christmas. Choir of King's College, Cambridge : Essential Carols

Review: Another fine collection of Christmas carols from the Anglican tradition. Some albums are tailor-made for Christmas Eve listening, the cozy musical equivalent of a roaring fire, a mug of eggnog, and the bright lights on the tree. The morning of Christmas Day requires something else entirely, and that's when this set of Essential Carols from the Choir of King's College, Cambridge, will fit the bill, with the angelically pure voices of young British choristers blending to the strains of traditional carols both familiar and little-known. This is Christmas music sung the old-fashioned way, its simplicity and spiritual warmth not compromised by big operatic voices or pop personalities. Recorded under the direction of David Willcocks between 1959 and '65, these performances sound truly timeless today, and no matter how knowledgeable you are about Christmas music, you'll find some surprises among these 38 carols.

Choir of King's College, Cambridge : Great Choral Classics

Review: Directed by Sir David Willcocks, The Choir of King's College, Cambridge was founded in 1441 by Henry VI, who wanted the daily services in his chapel to be provided with music, and stipulated that the college should be responsible for the education of the choristers. Byrd's "Ave Verum Corpus" and the 12 movements of Vivaldi's "Gloria in D Major, RV 589." CD 2 has Orlando Gibbons' "This is the record of John," the 11 movements of Bach's "Jesu, priceless treasure," and 12 Coronation Anthems by Handel, "Zadok the Priest," "My heart is inditing," "Let thy hand be strengthened" and "The King shall rejoice." The new carols sung by the Choir each Christmas Eve are always eagerly awaited by audiences.
