Men's Choral Recordings

Men’s choral music spans the centuries, and well-sung choral music brings a lush joy to the ear, whether it is sacred or secular, plainsong, vocal chamber music, chant, madrigals, folk songs or even the music of U2! Many strong composers have written for the male ensemble over the centuries, and choirs today are singing the work of talents as diverse as Rutter and Henry VIII. Men’s ensembles around the world – and we carry recordings from such diverse nations as Estonia, Finland, Canada and Russia, to name just a few – deliver glorious, powerful work.

Male Ensemble Northwest : Sweet Rivers

Review: 14-strong M.E.N. was formed in Longview, Washington in 1982, by choral musician and educator Howard Meharg. His mission was "to celebrate the art of male choral singing, to inspire men of all ages to musical artistry, and to encourage young men in leadership and example among their colleagues in music." The ensemble has been honored by invitations to sing as state, regional and national conventions of the ACDA. Unique among male choruses, each member of Male Ensemble Northwest is a conductor as well as an outstanding vocal musician. There are 13 richly harmonic tunes here, some of our favorites are some spiritual tunes, "Shout for Joy," "Alleluia," "When I Hear The Trumpet Sound," "City Called Heaven;" and Andrew Crouch's "Soon and Very Soon" (arranged by Randy Crenshaw); a pair of Lennon/McCartney songs, "I Will" and "Eleanor Rigby;" 5 Celtic Folk songs by Vijay Singh, "Timor et Tremor," "Fergus an' Molly," "Lament of a Fisher's Wife" and the delightful "Finnan Haddie;" "Sweet Rivers" and the lovely, traditional "Irish Blessing." There is occasional light piano and guitar accompaniment, but the voices, with their rich, bright harmonies, are the focus here. Powerful, beautiful material from this talented, veteran men's chorus!

Songlist: Timor et Tremor, Shout for Joy, Alleluia!, Sweet Rivers, When I Hear the Trumpet Sound, City Called Heaven, Fergus an' Molly, Lament of a Fisher's Wife, Finnan Haddie, Soon and Very Soon, I Will, Eleanor Rigby, Irish Blessing

Male Voice Choir of Helsinki : Hymns to Finland - Works for Male Voice Choir

Review: Born in Hamburg 200 years ago, Fredrik Pacius studied with Ludwig Spohr in Kassel, before serving as a violinist in the orchestra of the Royal Opera in Stockholm. When he arrived in Helsinki in 1835 it was in order to take up the post of music lecturer at the city's university. By the time of his death, almost six decades in the service of the musical life of his new country had earned him the epithet the father of Finnish music. He composed the first Finnish opera "Kung Karls jakt" and other works for the stage include The Princess of Cyprus and Loreley, both of which are available on BIS. But what he is mainly remembered for today is Vart land ('Our Land'), the national anthem of Finland, which he composed and conducted the first performance of in 1848. The choir at this occasion was Akademiska Sangforeningen (The Academic Male Voice Choir of Helsinki) which Pacius himself had founded in 1838. Some 160 years later the same choir performs the song here, together with other repertoire written or arranged for it by Pacius. The program is made up of songs in Swedish (including some of the emblematic patriotic songs of the evolving nation, as well as works in a lighter vein), Finnish (mainly arrangements of folk-songs) and German settings by Pacius of poems in his native language by writers such as Friedrich Ruckert. Following the choirs traditions some of the songs are here performed by a more intimate ensemble, i.e. quartet or octet.

Songlist: Varsang, Studensang, Sang For Nordiska Ynglingar, Det Var Da, Philomele, Den Sjuttonariga, Forgat Mig Ej, Till Jonas Peron, Fredmans Epistel N:o 14, Fredmans Epistel N:o 25, Fredmans Epistel N:o 13, Kreivin Sylissa Istunut, Folkvisa, Verinen Polka, Fantasi Over Ett Finskt Tema, Fruhlingsglaube, Ich Bin Nun Einmal So, Gesprache Der Irrlichter, Der Jager Auf Der Kirchweih, Wiegenlied, Die Abendgloke Auf Dem Berge, Lied An Die Schone Mullerin, A La Melancolie, Rheinweinlied, Schenkt Ein!, Trinkled, Bjorneborgarnas Marsch, Suomis Sang, Finlands Flagga, Hymn Till Finland, and more

Men Aloud : Live From Wales

Review: Fresh off their Platinum album debut, and on the heels of their stunning victory on BBC's television smash hit show, Last Choir Standing , Britain's favorite choir MEN ALOUD is set to bring their unique music making to North America. The choir, led by Tim Rhys-Evans, features 20 tremendous vocal talents from across Wales. In addition, Men Aloud is also a recent winner of the Classical Brit Album of the Year award for their second album, Band of Brothers. The program was produced in association with the BBC and was filmed in the Wales Millennium Center with featured performances by opera star Bryn Terfel, John Owen Jones (leading man of Broadway and London's West End's Les Miserables, Phantom of the Opera & Showboat) and pop icon, Bonnie Tyler. Men Aloud was formed in 2000 by Tim Rhys-Evans. Tim s primary aim was to encourage young men to get involved with one of Wales oldest and best loved traditions, male voice singing. The group are unafraid to tackle music not normally associated with male voice choirs, and their repertoire ranges from the 17th Century to the present day.

Songlist: O Verona, It Ain't Necessarily So, Don't Rain on My Parade, Macarthur Park, Bridge Over Troubled Water, All by Myself, Bui-Doi, Sit Down You'Re Rocking the Boat, Rhythm of Life, Cwm Rhondda, Gwahoddiad, Mae Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau

Men of Melodious Accord : My Love and I

Review: Boston's Alice Parker, composer, conductor and teacher was first known for her arrangements and collaboration with the late Robert Shaw. She has built an international reputation composing, researching folk music and performing. In 1985 she formed Melodious Accord, a 16-voice professional chorus. "My Love and I" features the men of this group, singing 24 traditional folk songs from America, England and Scotland, France, Czech Republic, Germany, Spain, Ireland and Sea Shanties. Some favorites: "Darling Nellie Gray," "Aura Lee," "When Love is Kind," "A-Roving," "Stodole Pumpa," "Al Olivo," "Has Sorrow Thy Young Days Shaded," "A Ballynure Ballad" and "To Ladies' Eyes." This is well-chosen music from another era, sometimes poignant and heart-tugging, sometimes rousing; always powerful. A generous collection, sung with tremendous feeling by Alice Parker's hand-picked men! All a cappella, nice liner notes with the complete lyrics.

Songlist: America:, Seeing Nellie Home, Stars of the Summer Night, Darling Nellie Gray, England and Scotland:, Passing By, Turn Ye to Me, When Love is Kind, Drink to Me Only with Thine Eyes, Sea Shanties:, Haul Away, Joe, Lowlands, A-Roving, France, Czech Republic, Germany:, L'Amour e Moy, Stodole Pumpa, Treue Liebe, Du, du liegst mir im Herzen, Spain:, La Tarara, Adois, Catedral de Burgos, Al Olivo, Ireland:, Has Sorrow Thy Young Days Shaded, A Ballynure Ballad, Down by the Sally Gardens, To Ladies' Eyes, America:, Aura Lee, My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean, and more

Men Of Shaw : Sea Shanties

Review: Recorded in 1960, under the direction of one of the foremost conductors of the modern age - Shaw's resume includes collaborations with Arturo Toscanini - "Sea Shanties" is not merely a period piece. The 16 shanties, arranged by Robert Shaw and his frequent associate, Alice Parker, are stirring and invigorating, as was indeed their purpose, as many of them supplied the rhythmic accompaniment for hard manual labor. Slower tasks required a commensurate meter: "Shenandoah" and "Lowlands" are typical examples. Finally, in their down time, sailors would sing for entertainment, often recalling exotic ports-of-call, and romanticizing their adventures ("Swansea Town," "Santy Anna"). Four songs have acoustic guitar.

Songlist: Blow the Man Down, Bound for the Rio Grande, Lowlands, Whup! Jamboree, Tom's Gone to Hilo, A-Roving, Good-bye, Fare Ye Well, What Shall We Do with the Drunken Sailor, The Shaver, Stormalong, John, Swansea Town , Haul Away, Joe, Shenandoah, Santy Anna, The Drummer and the Cook, Spanish Ladies

Moravian Teachers Choir : Janacek: Choruses For Male Voices

Review: The Moravian Teachers Choir is once of the best-known Czech ensembles, established by graduates of Kromeriz Teachers College in 1903. Their repertoire includes works by distinguished Czech composers from the turn of the century, focusing in this recording on Choruses for Male Voices by master composer Leos Janacek (1854-1928). Written in the intensely creative last decade of his life, after his opera "Jenufa's" long-overdue success. "Choruses," which is comprised of four groups, primarily based on Moravian folk songs, was written for unaccompanied male chorus, of which the MTC is recognized as one of the finest in the world. These are 21 powerful, romantic songs with wonderful harmonies, all in the Moravian language, but the short translation gives us their flavor: "Ploughing," "Our Birch Tree," "The Quilt," "Warning," "O Love," "Oh, to be a soldier," "Your Wondrous Eyes," "The Gnat's Wedding," "The Evening Ghost," "Seventy Thousand" (about the revolt of the Silesian miners), "The Wandering Madman," "Parting," "The Dove," "The Jealous Man," and "True Love." "Choruses" is a rich time capsule of rarely-heard folk melodies from one of the oldest and best all-male choruses.

Songlist: Ctyri Lidove muzske sbory (Four Folk male-voice choruses), Ctverice muzskych sboru (Four male-voice choruses), Ctvero muzskych sboru moravskych (Four Moravian male-voice choruses), Kantor halfar (Teacher halfar), Marycka Magdonova, Sedmdesat tisic (Seventy Thousand), Ceska legie (The Czech Legion), Potulny silenec (The Wandering Madman), Tri muzke sbory (Three male-voice choruses), Laska opravdiva (True Love)

Musaic : Peace Be To You

Review: We had the pleasure recently of experiencing a ten-minute set by Bay Area 8-man a cappella ensemble Musaic at the Harmony Sweeps Bay Area Regional in San Francisco and are happy to hear more of their tight, joyous harmonies in this Christmas collection, "Christmas with Musaic." 17 songs, and our favorites include deeply spiritual songs like Handl's "O Magnum Mysterium," Paul Manz' "E'en So Lord Jesus, Quickly Come," Burt Hudson's lovely "Some Children See Him," Rene Clausen's "Set Me A Seal" and the haunting 13th century plainsong "Of the Father's Love Begotten;" as well as carols like "Here Comes Santa Claus," "Jingle Bells," "Christmas Song," "Santa Claus is Coming to Town," "Winter Wonderland," "Go Frosty Go," "O Come, O Come Emmanuel," the traditional English drinking song "Landlord Fill the Flowing Bowl" and "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas." New York Polyphony : I Sing the Birth

Review: New York Polyphony is rapidly gaining a reputation as one of the finest new classical vocal ensembles. Fusing elegant vocalism with expert ensemble singing, its four male voices consistently deliver dynamic performances of music spanning nearly a millennium in a range of styles, combining historically-informed interpretive style with their own unique artistry. From the simplicity of plainchant to the dense chromaticism of contemporary works, the New York Polyphony sound is unified, energized and distinctive. The musical landscape traversed on this disc of music for the Advent and Christmas season is broad, from 12th century conductus to a 21st century carol, though the musical center is firmly polyphonic and rooted in the late Medieval world. The group is joined by a women's trio in several works written for more than four parts. The sound is clean and present, with appropriate resonance for this material. For the listener looking for a collection of contemplative Christmas music that steers clear of the most obvious selections and introduces intriguing new repertoire, as well as for the fan of early music vocal ensembles, this album has much to offer.

Songlist: Veni Redemptor gentium, Hodie Christus natus est, Hodie Christus natus est, Puer natus est nobis, Lully, lulla, thou little tiny child, Beata viscera, Ave Maria Mater Dei, Alma Redemptoris mater, The darkest midnight in December, The Fader of Heven, Vox in Rama, Vox in Rama, Vox in Rama, Away in a manger, Ave Maria, Coventry Carol, Ave Maria, Lullay, lullow, I saw a swete semly syght, Mervele noght, Josep, Nowell: Dieus wous garde, byewsser, Veni Redemptor gentium, O magnum mysterium, Ecce advenit dominator Dominus, Magi veniunt ab oriente, Nunc dimittis, Vox in Rama

New York Polyphony : Tudor City

Review: Classical vocal quartet New York Polyphony struck a chord with their 2007 Avie debut, I Sing The Birth (AV 2141). It was an Editor's Christmas Choice in BBC Music magazine, and Classic FM awarded it five stars. For their second release, the all-male foursome delivers their signature fusion of historically informed performances in a range of styles. Interspersed among sacred masterpieces of Tudor England are four new works by British-Norwegian composer Andrew Smith, adding a modern harmonic richness and complexity to the album. The result is a compelling synthesis of ancient and contemporary vocal music.

Songlist: Ave Verum Corpus, Gaude Virgo Mater Christi, Flos Regalis, Flos Regalis, O Come In One To Praise The Lord, Expend, O Lord, My Plant of Word, Surrexit Christus, Stella Caeli, Speciosa Facta Es, Audivi Vocem, Why Fum'th in Fight, To Mock Your Reign, Man Blest No Doubt, God Grant With Grace, Magnificat A 4, Magnificat A 4, In Pace

Notre Dame Glee Club : Beautiful Rain

Review: The Notre Dame Glee Club is a music tradition that began at the University in 1915. Since 1993, Daniel Stowe has led the Glee Club in world-wide tours with great success. Today, Glee Club repertoire is not just football songs, sea shanties and the alma mater theme. In recent years, the choir has been trimmed in numbers to 55 select singers, and their repertoire now focuses upon a wider range of styles: from German art songs, American spirituals, Russian Orthodox, Baroque and Renaissance sacred music, to Barbershop harmony and folk music from nations of the world. The Glee Club's versatility is showcased in the wide variety of genres on this disc.. The musicianship of the Glee Club is all the more remarkable when considering that the Glee Club is a volunteer ensemble, operating independently from music degree programs. Recorded in spring 2007, in the finely-tuned acoustic of Leighton Concert Hall in the newly-finished DiBartolo Performing Arts Center on the campus of University of Notre Dame.

Songlist: Rain, Rain, Beautiful Rain, Sweep Clean Mary, Daniel Saw the Stone, Prayer of the Children, Abendstanchen, Trinklied, Der Jager Abschied, Duh Tvoy blagiy, Slava v vishnih Bogu, Crucifixus, Domine, non sum dignus, Lamentations of Jeremaih, Down Among the Dead Men, Kpanlongo, Tancuj, Tancuj, Nicaragua, Nicaraguita, Whup! Notre Dame Glee Club : In Dulci Jubilo

Review: The 71-strong male voices of the NDGC presents this fine collection of Christmas musical landmarks in "the hope of reawakening that mystery and wonder" of the Christmas seasons of their childhood. Review: The Ohio State University Men's Glee Club was organized in 1875 and has created a long tradition of choral excellence. The 2006 incarnation of the group, conducted by Dr. Robert J. Orlando Consort : Medieval Christmas

Review: Although Medieval Christmas celebrations primarily consisted of over-eating, flirtation, hunting and drinking, each day began with a mass. Sacred and secular traditions and customs were often intertwined as part of a season of celebration which culminated with the feast of the Epiphany. On this new CD, the Orlando Consort offers an unusual & wide-ranging collection of secular and liturgical music from England, France and the Low Countries. To read the texts of these pieces is to un-knot the various traditions that are otherwise confused by today's pick-and-mix carol concerts. Orlando Consort : The Call Of The Phoenix

Review: The Orlando Consort sings rare and exquisite church music from 15th Century England, including motets, antiphons and psalm settings by Dunstaple, Frye, Plummer and others. This program spans some seventy years of English sacred music, dating from the reigns of Henry V, Henry VI and Edward IV, and the period of unrest known as the Wars of the Roses. It illustrates the rise of the so-called contenance angloise (English manner)-valued especially for its suave melody, fluid rhythms and prevailing consonance-from its beginnings around 1420 to the repertory of the Eton Choirbook at the end of the 15th century. Sadly only a tiny proportion of the music that must have been written in this period has survived, but the pieces included in this anthology provide vivid testimony to this astonishingly rich and varied repertoire.

Songlist: Stella celi, Quam pulcra es , Tota pulcra es , Gloria , Salve scema , Credo , Total pulcra es , O pulcherrima , Sanctus , O sanctissime presul, Anna mater matris , Audivi vocem , Ave regina celorum , Beata Dei genitrix , Ave regina celorum, Gaude virgo , Nesciens mater, Stella celi

Orlando Consort : The Rose, The Lily & the Whortleberry

Review: In celebration of the floral imagery used by many of Europe's greatest composers over a span of 300 years to depict both earthly and heavenly love, the Orlando Consort sings poetic texts ranging from the sacred to the downright suggestive. Includes essays by Sir Roy Strong, Susan Hitch; and a garden design created by Christopher Bradley-Hole. Also included is a handsomely illustrated book full of beautiful medieval paintings and photographs of surviving gardens. Additional notes are contributed by Sir Roy Strong, President of the Garden History Society of England; Susan Hitch, an expert in medieval literature and a BBC Radio 3 presenter; and Christopher Bradley-Hole, one of the world's top garden designers, who contributes a plan for your very own neo-medieval garden.

Orlando Consort : The Toledo Summit

Review: An encounter between two powerful dynasties. The Orlando Consort revisits a fascinating meeting between two musical cultures. During his 1502 ceremonial visit to Toledo (Spain), Philip the Fair of Burgundy, and his Royal hosts, Ferdinand and Isabella, vied to display the artistic achievements of their respective realms. Music was central to all the festivities: solemn celebrations, worship, courtly banquets, dances and chivalric entertainments. "Immaculate tuning, rhythmic concision and clear articulation of the text." - BBC Music Magazine

Orphei Drangar : Caprices with OD Vol 2

Review: The 1960s saw the beginning of the "Caprice," an annual event that soon gained great popularity. It was a wholly new concert form in Sweden: a mixture of musical styles, everything from serious classical music to jazz and folk music, and as time went on it became more and more of a scenic production with dramatizations, choreography and slapstick humor. An important ingredient was the appearance of one or more mystery guest artists. Over the years, many of Sweden's foremost artists within various genres ahve appeared to suprise the audience, and often have the opportunity to present themselves form a new angle. The development of the Caprice would hardly have been possible without the special conditions that Orphei Drangar has to offer: Eric Ericson's musical versatility and curiosity, not to mention his wide-ranging contacts within Swedish artistic circles; Robert Sund's skill as an arranger, of which this CD provides ample evidence; and his brother Hakan's artistry at the piano, or an equally high calibre in classical music and in jazz.

Songlist: There's no business, White Christmas, Broderna Sund of Music - Variationer over Csardas, Fabodpsalm, Smaka syltan, pastorn, Midzjtnatzskin radznjeff, Rysk visa, Yngve Gamlins sprakkurs, Naturljud i Hagaparken, Vila vid denna kalla, Fjariln vingad syns pa Haga, Gubben ar gammal, Hagakoren, Mood Indigo, Fly me to the moon, The drunken sailor, Hor I O / Nu ar det jul, Det ar en ros utsprungen, O helga natt, Chopin a la suedoise

Orphei Drangar : Caprices with OD Vol 3

Review: Not only is Orphei Drangar one of the oldest and best men's choirs in the world, but it is a true gathering of individualists, almost all of whom have amde of will make their mark in professions other than music. Given this urge to express themselves as individuals, their popular pre-CHristmas concerts, known locally as "caprices," are not just a collective letting down of hair," but a much-appreciated opportunity for displaying all sorts of individual talents not usually required of choristers -- whether this be writing musical sketches, singing in some hitherto undiscovered register, representing half of a theatrical horse and etceteras. Add to this Eric Ericson, the world's greatest choral conductor -- who looked after Orphei Drangar for forty years because he enjoyed them so much -- and the mixture is potent, not to say explosive. Like all the greatest musicians Eric Ericson has that well-developed sense of humor that comes from recognizing that one has been entrusted with a very rare gift. Together, Eric Ericson and Orphei Drangar let their hair down in grand style. Indeed they elevate the very concept of "letting one's hair down" into something like an art form.

Songlist: Hor I Orphei Drangar / Kalinka, Pa faltet stod en liten bjork, Balladen om Eugen Cork, Livet ar ett helvete, Halsa dom dar hemma, Fragancia, Julgranen, Nu har jag fatt den jag vill ha, Bridge Over Troubled Water, Stormy Weather, True Love, Norgehistoria, Engelska flottan, Kivikspolka, Poor Lonesome Cowboy, Feeling Too Good Blues, Hark, Ye Sons if Orpheus, Maybe Its Because I'm a Londoner, Jag ser pa dina ogon / 5000 man, Viljasangen, Lat oss liksom svalorna, Operetten ar dod

Orphei Drangar : Caprices with OD Vol 4

Review: This is the fourth volume of a series of discs documenting the Caprices -- the ever popular pre-Christmas entertainments that Orphei Drangar started in 1962. By 1982, the Caprices had found the form that most people associate with them today: one or more guest artists -- singers, musicians, comedians, actors or actresses -- their names a well-kept secret until the opening night; a theme for the performance providing opportunities for musical and theatrical pranks, and alarming leaps between different moods and styles.

Songlist: Smideskoren ur Trubaduren, Gremlins aria ur Eugen Onegin, Diana, If Love's a Sweet Passion, Tiger Rag, Gregoriansk Ja, jag kommer, En manskenspromenad, Kom i min famn, Humanifestet, Till gladjens varn och ara, symfoni i fyra satser, Kinesisk Hor, I Orphei Drangar, Man jiang hong, Vantat haver jag, Nu ar det gott att leva, Cadillac, Jag hatar man ur Kiss me Kate, She's Leaving Home, Danga, Two Sleepy People , Send In The Clowns, Sophisticated Lady

Orphei Drangar : Christmas Songs

Review: Formed in 1853, the choir Orphei Drangar (OD) has constantly striven to discover and develop new directions for the male-voice choir, while not neglecting its splendid traditions. The first OD disc recorded together with the choir's new artistic director, the celebrated choral conductor Cecilia Rydinger Alin, is no exception. Described by Choir & Organ (UK) as 'a tremendous choir, with superb technique and an immense, expressive range', OD gives proof of its versatility in a highly varied program which still manages to stay within the theme of Christmas: original settings and new arrangements of Swedish folk songs and Christmas classics, English carols and Broadway songs - with Stille Nacht, a Russian hymn in praise of the Holy Virgin, and Eric Whitacre's widely admired Lux aurumque added for good measure. Supplying even more nuances to the palette is the choir's guest artist, the young Swedish soprano Ida Falk Winland, as well as a brass ensemble, supporting choir and soloist in parts of the program.

Songlist: Koppangen, Forunderligt at sige, Jul, jul, stralande jul, Hosiannah!, Madonnans vaggvisa, Vittskovlevisan, Staffansvisa fran Orust, Hodie Christus natus est, He Shall Feed His Flock, Lux aurumque, Stille Nacht, Dostoyno yest, Es ist ein Ros entsprungen, Joy to the World, Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, The Christmas Song (Merry Christmas To You), Hark! Orphei Drangar : Diamonds

Review: The popularity of the male-voice choir has dwindled during the past century. More common in the Romantic era, repertoire written specifically for men's choruses is significantly less as well. On the CD Diamonds, Orphei Drangar, led by Robert Sund and Folke Alin, sings 20th century a cappella pieces written specifically for male choir. The pieces chosen are certainly gems in the repertoire. Many are by French composers such as Francis Poulenc, Darius Milhaud and Camille Saint-Saens, who's Saltarelle is quite fun. The group reaches far to the east in Michio Mamiya's "Composition for Chorus No.6" which is based on Japanese folk music. The Anders Hillborg piece, was originally written for a mixed choir, but was commissioned to write a version for Eric Ericcson and the Orphei Dranger. This phenomenal group sparkles on this recording.

Songlist: Quatre Petites De St. Francois d'Assise, Psaume 121, Gryningsvind , Muistse mere laulud , Iltapilvia, Saltarelle , Traumlicht, Tarantella, Composition for Chorus , Slovenska piesen , Zornicka, Bonus Track

Orphei Drangar : Highlights

Review: This disc presents an international selection of music from Orphei Drangar's concert repertoire as well as two opera choruses in collaboration with the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra. Folk songs from Sweden open the recording followed by many twentieth century works for men's voice chorus. From Eastern Europe there are "Four Old Folk Songs" by Bela Bartok and two of "The Songs of Hamlet" by Estonian composer Veijo Tormis. From America, "A Stopwatch" by Samuel Barber captures a scene from the Spanish Civil War in which he and poet Stephen Spender volunteered. Two of the most beloved opera choruses end the program: the chorus of Gypsy's (Anvil Chorus) from Verdi's Il Trovatore and the chorus of Soldiers from Gounod's Faust. This inspired recording of Highlights comes from the choir's work with the incomparable Eric Ericson.

Songlist: Hej dunkom, Uti voar hage, Pa fjallet i sol , Ett bondbrollop: 4 I brollopsgarden, Kung Liljekonvalje , Four Old Hungarian Songs, The Songs of Hamlet , Three Slovakian Folksongs, Wir zogen in das Feld, Traumlicht, An das meer, A Stopwatch , Il brivido, Psaume 121 , Saltarelle , Il trovatore: Coro di zingari -, Faust: Choeur des soldats

Orphei Drangar : Schubert for Male Choruses

Review: Of the hundreds of songs written by Franz Schubert, those for solo voice are best known today. He also wrote over one hundred songs for men's choir. Occasionally, they were performed by quartets in private settings and a few of them were published during Schubert's lifetime. But it was not until nearly forty years after his death that people began to realize that this music was out there. In Vienna in 1866 a volume of his choruses was published by Johann Herbeck, who was a champion of Schubert's unknown music. These songs vary in style from piano or string accompaniment to a cappella. Occasionally, there is a soloist, as in "Standchen," for male choir, alto solo and piano. For this recording Orphei Drangar, conducted by Robert Sund is joined by alto Malena Ernman, tenor Jonas Degerfeldt, pianist Folke Alin and the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra. The always brilliant OD sings these rarely performed works with beauty and grace.

Songlist: Nachtgesang, Die Nacht, Der Gondelfahrer, Sehnsucht, Im Gegenwartigen Vergangenes, Liebe, Standchen, Grab und Mond, Der 23 Psalm, Die einsiedelei, Nachthelle, Trinklied ist der Schritt der Zeit, Geist der Liebe, Gesang der Geister uber

Oxford New College Choir : Agnus Dei - Music Of Inner Harmony

Review: This is a splendid sampling of some of the world's finest choral music, sung by one of the world's outstanding choirs. This "anthology of sacred choral music" spans 400 years and includes such masterpieces as Allegri's Miserere, Bach's "Jesu, joy of man's desiring," and Barber's exquisite Agnus Dei, which is the composer's choral setting of his famous Adagio for Strings. Along the way we also hear Mozart's sublime "Ave verum corpus," Elgar's "Lux aeterna," and the Kyrie from Palestrina's Missa Papae Marcelli. There has been a choir at England's New College, Oxford, since the year 1379, and this impressive line of experience shows in the intelligent, unfaltering, and finely polished performances by today's ensemble of 16 boys and 12 adults.

Oxford New College Choir : Copland and His American Contemporaries

Review: This recording of North American music of the last fifty or so years includes music by a Russian, Igor Stravinsky. His origins notwithstanding, he is one of the 'grand old men' of twentieth-century American music, having become an American citizen in the early 1940s, shortly before writing his Mass for choir and double wind quintet. The recording ends with a spiritual, arranged by one of Britain's most eminent twentieth-century composers - a sort of compliment to the American tradition from the other side of the pond. The rest of the music speaks for itself, with an inimitable American accent from beginning to end. "Copland's In the beginning is a stern test for any choir in a live performance...This recording is an amazing tour de force-intonation spot-on, effortless high As from the boys and finally a B flat, all superbly delivered. This CD is well worth having for this refreshingly affirmative evocation of the Creation alone." Gramophone Magazine

Songlist: The Song of Deborah, In the Beginning, I Will Sing and Raise a Psalm, O magnum mysterium, O Deus, ego amo te, Oratio patris condren: O Jesu Vivens in Maria, Thee, God..., Psalm 67, The Dove Descending, Mass, Steal Away (from A Child of Our Time)

Oxford New College Choir : MacMillan and his British Contemporaries

Review: New College Choir brings the ideal combination of vocal freshness and consummate experience to this music, with commendable individual standout solos exemplifying the standard of the ensemble as a whole. The recording has admirable atmosphere and transparency. If you associate Poulenc with frivolity, lightness and superficiality, track 20 on the first CD here is the antidote. Austere, dramatic, deeply serious, the eight-minute Litanies a la Vierge noire is as far removed from the image of Poulenc the playboy boulevardier as possible. The Mass is an excellent performance of Poulenc's a cappella masterpiece, the edgy rhythmic detailing of the Kyrie and Gloria pluckily projected. A special mention is due to Sasha Ockenden, soaring confidently in the fearfully exposed treble solos of the beautiful Agnus Dei.

Songlist: O Sing Unto the Lord, Christus Vincit, Ecce Beatam Lucem, Libera Nos, On the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin, Into Thy Hands, Love Bade Me Welcome, Since I Believe, A Prayer of St. Augustine, Surrexit Christus, Jesu, Dulcis Memoria, Whitsun Carol, Op.115b, Salve Regina

Oxford New College Choir : Nicholas Ludford

Review: The deeply expressive music of Nicholas Ludford (c. 1485-1557) has been re-discovered only relatively recently. Few composers of his stature - comparable to that of John Taverner - have been so comprehensively and so unjustly ignored for nearly fi ve centuries. Recorded in the glorious acoustic of Saint-Martin de Hoff, Sarrebourg - a perfect environment for this extraordinary music - the disc features the Missa benedicta et venerabilis, one of Ludford's most accomplished festal Masses, with its plainsong propers, and two of his extended votive antiphons: Domine Jesu Christe and Ave cuius conceptio. Under the leadership of Edward Higginbottom, the Choir of New College, Oxford, has gained a worldwide reputation and is known particularly for its stylish performances of Renaissance and Baroque music

Songlist: Antienne Ave cuius conceptio, Introit: Salve sancta Parens, Gloria in excelsis Deo, Graduel: Benedicta et venerabilis, Alleluia: Post partum Virgo inviolata Alleluia, Credo in unum Deum, Offertoire: Ave Maria, gratia plena, Sanctus et Benedictus, Communion: Beata viscera, Agnus Dei, Antienne Domine Jesu Christe

Oxford New College Choir : Poulenc and His French Contemporaries

Review: Throughout the disc Higginbottom draws exemplary clarity of texture from his New College choristers; the tantalizing, almost acidic harmonies of all these pieces are laid out like jewels ready for the closest of inspections. Moments of beauty (and they come thick and fast) are deliciously understated . . . for performances which are full of musical and artistic integrity and a real sense of involvement with the music, these from New College, Oxford are in a class of their own.

Phoenix Boys Choir : Missa Criolla

Review: Since 1948, the Phoenix Boys Choir has provided a top-quality music education for boys 7-14 and spirited entertainment for audiences around the world. Concert tours throughout the US, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Mexico and the Orient have won the group a reputation as one of the world's outstanding boy choirs. In 2001 the Choir won a Grammy for Best Choral Performance for its recording of Penderecki's Credo with the Oregon Bach Festival Orchestra and Chorus, conducted by Helmuth Rilling. "Miso" features the powerful "Misa Criolla" and 10 more inspired, sacred and traditional songs from Argentina, Brazil, Mexico and Peru. Some favorites (some accompanied by the band Khenany from Sonora) are the familiar tunes "El Condor Pasa," "Escondido," "Cielito Linda," "Eu e voce" from Brazil, the five parts of the title tune," the a cappella sacred songs "Hosanna, Filii David," "Una Hora," "Judas Mercator" and "Laudi Alla Vergine Maria." "Misa" is a joy, the bright sounds of the boys' voices working equally well with Khenany's salsa-flavored folk tunes as with the soaring sacred music!

Ragazzi Boys Chorus : Canciones de Alabanza

Review: The 50 boy singers of San Mateo, CA's Ragazzi are conducted by Joyce Keil in this wonderful and diverse collection of songs of praise. From the solemn 14th-century pilgrim song ("Stella Splendens") and the wonderful Renaissance motet ("Salve Regina") to the folk rhythms of the "Misa Criolla" and the wild instrumental colors of the modern "Estampie Natalis," these songs all celebrate the birth of Jesus, and his mother. Taking on the hard work of learning these difficult pieces, the young singers skipped and danced out of the studio after perfecting a song. Other favorites are the 5 movements of Giacomo Perti's "Magnificat A 4," and Thomas Luis de Victoria's "O Sacrum Convivium." There is some accompaniment by organ, piccolo, strings, recorder, bass and percussion. A joyful, touching effort by talented Ragazzi.

Red Star Red Army Chorus : Kalinka! Russian Folk Music

Review: The Red Star Red Army Chorus and Dance Ensemble was created in 1978 in Moscow, mostly to raise the cultural level and maintain the battle-readiness of the strategic rocket forces and other elements of the Red Army. A Russian proverb says "A fairy tale is a lie, but a song tells the truth." Fairy tales have become rare in present-day Russia, but folk tunes still form an integral part of daily life. Accompanied by the balalaika and the bayan (a large button-key accordion), these songs tell of love and loss, of sadness and solace, of brave deeds and everyday problems. Humor and dance can be found here, as well as melancholic longing and heroic pathos. Some favorites of the 18 songs: "Regimental Polka," "Kalinka," "Volga Boat Song," "The Swallow," "The Brave Don Cossacks," "Wait For Your Soldier," "Ochi Chornye-Dark Eyes," "In The Sunny Meadow," "The Cliff," and "On The March." All accompanied. "Kalinka" beautifully captures the brash power and deep emotions of the Red Star Red Army Chorus.

Songlist: Regimental Polka, Meadowland, Kalinka, Volga Boat Song, The Sun Set Behind a Mountain, The swallow, The Pine Trees Are Rustling, Kamarinskaya, The Brave Don Cossacks, Wait For Your Soldier, Ochi Chornye - Dark Eyes, Someone's Horse Is Standing There, In the Sunny Meadow, Flight of the Bumblebee, The Cliff, Dark Eyebrows, Dubinushka, On the March

Rhos Orpheus Male Choir : Carols at Christmas

Review: The Village of RHOSLLANNERCHRUGOG ("Rhos") is situated some 4 miles south west of Wrexham in North Wales, which itself is 12 miles south of the historic Roman city of Chester. lt is a former mining village, but the last remaining pit closed in 1987. Once known as the largest village in Wales, it has a long history of producing talented performers in all areas of the arts. Over the years, it has been home to two male voice choirs, a ladies' choir, a girls' choir, a mixed choir and a championship quality Silver Band. Rhos has been the birthplace of many top class musicians, actors and singers who have made significant contributions to Welsh culture not only as performers, but also as writers and composers. Here the male choir sings some holiday favorites.

Robert Shaw Chamber Singers : Schubert, Songs For Male Chorus

Review: In addition to his many solo songs, Franz Schubert wrote about one hundred male quartets and choruses. These part songs, like their solo counterparts, use texts by the great poets, like Goethe and Schiller, and have equally beautiful melodies. The popularity of these pieces was due to the development of music making by the middle class. Small public concerts, given in taverns or peoples homes, were places that the songs would be performed. Schubert was often requested to compose these part-songs for the occasions. Among the all male songs is the gem "Standchen" which is scored for alto and male chorus with piano accompaniment. The men of the Robert Shaw Chamber Singers perform these rarely heard pieces with great beauty and lyricism. The songs on this CD are a cappella, with a few having guitar or piano accompaniment.

Songlist: Die Nacht, Die Nachtigall, Wehmuth, Der Gondelfahrer, Mondenschein, Nachthelle, Das Dorfchen, Die Einsiedelei, Sehnsucht, Grab Und Mond, Fruhlingsgesang, Liebe, Widerspruch, An Den Fruhling, La Pastorella, Standchen, Der Entfernten
