Irish Vocal Harmony Music

Folk is a term often used to describe musical styles that are indigenous to an area, a culture or a country. While the Celts settled in much of Western Europe, not just Ireland, the Irish are, more than most, identified with Celtic music. Much of the folk music coming out of Ireland is in the old troubadour style of story-telling. Familiarize yourself with what music sounded like in a world where it served as story-telling entertainment before Hollywood and widespread literacy. It may be sung in English or Gaelic, but you don't have to understand the words to get the feeling; it's the kind of magnetic music that gets your toes and hearts moving.

Anuna : Best of

Review: Founded in 1987, Ireland's acclaimed 13-strong mixed-voice choral sensation Anuna, under the Musical Direction of Dublin composer Michael McGlynn and Directed by John McGlynn, recorded a series of excellent albums and a DVD after their leap into the spotlight touring and recording with Riverdance. The recordings from which "The Best of's" 22 tunes were selected are "Anuna," Invocation," "Omnis," "Deep Dead Blue," "Behind the Closed Eye," "Cynara," "Winter Songs," "Sanctus" and "Invocations of Ireland (DVD). Our (hard to pick) favorites are "August," from a poem by Francis Ledwidge, the chant "Christus Resurgens," a rare early Irish song written in 1150, the 16th century "Gaudette" from the Piae Cantiones, Michael McGlynn's adaption of a poem by St. Columcille, "The Wild Song," commissioned by Rajaton, the traditional "Dulaman," "Nobilis Humilis," an ode to 13th century St. Magnus of the Orkney Islands and to St. Patrick, the Irish romantic ballads "Ceann Dubh Dilis" and "The Lass of Glenshee" and "Wind on Sea," with lovely solos by John and Michael McGlynn. There is considerable accompaniment here, including guitar, low whistle, viola/violin, percussion, vibraphone, flute, Concert and Irish Harp, uileann pipes and tin whistle. Every song on this generous, well-chosen collection is powerful, haunting and beautiful. Don't miss "The Best of " Anuna!

Anuna : Deep Dead Blue

Review: Sublime Dublin composer Michael McGlynn and his talented mixed ensemble Anuna bring us their 6th haunting CD, based on the music of the ancient Celts. 13 songs, beginning with the title tune, written by Bill Frisell and Elvis Costello, McGlynn-arranged Irish and English Medieval masterpieces "Nobilis Humilis," "Dicant Nunc," "Ther Is No Ros" and "Quem Queritis," originals written by Michael, "Blackthorn," "Kyrie," "The Green Laurel," "Island," "The Fisher King" and "The Sea," and traditional songs like "Sliabh Geal Gcua," also McGlynn-arranged. Anuna : Omnis

Review: Recorded twice, once in 1995 and again in 1996 for international release, Omnis is the best of these two recordings, and contains 3 bonus tracks, one of which ("A Stor mo Chroi") has never been released before. Anuna founder Michael McGlynn calls Omnis a defining CD of some of the group's most memorable moments, from the energetic "Dulaman," now a choral standard throughout the world, to the mystical and exotic "O Viridissima." All three of the lovely "Tenebrae" responsories are now included on one recording. 20 songs, remastered and re-edited, a "best-of" which includes "The Flower of Maherally," "Maria Matrem," "Ave Generosa," "Roisin Dubh" and "The Mermaid." This is spirited, haunting, memorable music from Ireland's finest mixed chorus. The full color liner notes has some beautiful pictures of the group and all the lyrics.

Songlist: Salve Rex Gloriae, Ardaigh Cuan, Beati Quorum Via, The Flower of Maherally, Geantrai, Maria Matrem, Codail a Linbh, Gaudete, Agnus Dei, Ave Generosa, O Viridissima, Dulaman, A Stor Mo Chroi, Roisin Dubh, The Mermaid, St. Nicholas, Diwanit Bugale, Tenebrae I, Tenebrae II, Tenebrae III

Anuna : Sanctus

Review: Sanctus features seven tracks, including the famous "Miserere Mei Deus" by Allegri. This sublime piece features stratospheric soprano vocals and runs to just under 13 minutes in length. The album includes four original pieces by Michael McGlynn, including his "Agnus Dei". Four of the tracks have been previously released, however over two thirds of the album features newly recorded material.

Songlist: Crucifixus, Nobilis Humilis, Agnus Dei, Mariam Matrem Virginem, Victimae, Miserere Mei Deus, O Maria

Anuna : Sensation

Review: Vocal group Anuna's first release of new material in six years is a major leap forward from their last few offerings, throwing into high relief the progress that founder and group leader Michael McGlynn has made as a composer. The opening track '0 Ignis Spiritus' brings a text by medieval mystic Hildegarde von Bingen to glorious life, with Ken Edge's saxophone matching the reedy timbre of soloist Miriam Blennerhassett's wonderfully rich voice. The dreamy title track (McGlynn's setting of the Rimbaud poem of that name) is another highlight, with the gravel-voiced Gilles Servat speaking the verses over the ensemble's multi-layered harmonies. Bringing the CD to an electrifying close is the shimmering, densely textured '0 Maria', which deserves to become part of the standard repertoire for choral groups everywhere.

Songlist: O Ignis Spiritus, Brezairola, Sensation, Silver River, Shining Water, Lux Aeterna, The Road Of Passage, Whispers Of Paradise, Maid In The Moor, O Maria, Tenebrae IV

Darach O' Cathain : Traditional Irish Unaccompanied Singing

Review: Darach S Cathain said once, "When you've music in you, you're hearing music always." This recording enables us to have and hear the power and love of a singer who is known as a giant figure in Irish traditional singing. His unaccompanied vocals, sung in Irish, are revered as examples of the finest and purest examples ever documented. Most of the songs in this recording he learned as a boy from his mother who only sang at home or with friends. He was a poet born of poets and had been writing songs since he was twelve. A romantic, he fell in love at 19, raised his family by working as a farmer for twelve years before emigrating to Leeds where these recordings were made. Here is the real tradition!

Songlist: Tomas Ban Mac Aogain, Caoirigh Na Japs, Baile Ui Lai, Maire Ni Ghriofa, An Gabha Ceartan, An Beinnsin Luachra, An Sceilpin Draighneach, Caislean Ui Neill, Donnchadh Ban, Sail îg Rua, Ta Na Paipeir ç Saighneail, An Caisideach Ban, îro, Se Do Bheatha 'Bhaile!

Joe Heaney : Say A Song

Review: Most people who heard him believe that Joe Heaney was the greatest Conamara singer in memory. He came from An Aird Thoir, near Carna, which is a famous center of the traditions of story telling and traditional singing. As his singing became the focus of his life he, naturally learned the stories of the songs and would pass on his deep love for the Irish Heritage to any interested. As a result he became a master singer and story teller. His reputation grew to international stature in no small part by winning the Gold Medal for seannss singing at the national Oireachtas festival in 1955. Like many talented Irish people of that time he had to emigrate, first to Britain and then to the United States where he finally received an appointment as lecturer and artist-in-residence at Washington State University in Seattle. This is a compilation of his best recordings.

Songlist: A Stor Mo Chroi, Eileanoir a Ruin, The Galway Shawl, The Wife of the Bold Tenant Farmer, Roisin Dubh, A Raibh Tu Ar an Gcarraig?, Red Is the Rose, Oiche Nollag, Coochenanty, Will You Come Over the Mountain?, The Rocks of Bawn, An Tiarna Randal, My Love She's in America/Off to California, Oro oro Do Bheatha 'Bhaile!, Bean Dubh an Ghleanna, I Wish I Had Someone to Love Me, An Buinnea Bui, The Claddagh Ring, Caoineadh Na Dtri Muire

Maura O'Connell : Naked with Friends

Review: Maura has always been singing, growing up in Ireland, where she tapped into the vast treasury of soulful folk songs, which she absorbed by osmosis. When interviewed as her fame slowly grew, they would ask "Why don't you play an instrument, why don't you write?" Her stock answer was, "Yeah, I'm just a singer." She says that "Naked with Friends" has been following her around for a very long time, and her friends include Aine Derrane, Sarah Dugas, Liam Bradley, Paul Brady, Alison Krauss, Tim O'Brien, Dolly Parton, Kate Rusby and Darrell Scott. Some favorites among these 13 haunting cuts are Jimmy McCarthy's "The Bright Blue Rose," Cheryl Wheeler's "Arrow," Rhonda Jo Fleming & Janis Ian's "Some People's Lives," "Ae Fond Kiss," traditional tunes "The Blacksmith," "Anach Cuain" and "I Know My Love," Joan Armatrading's poignant "Weakness in Me," Darrell Scott's "This Beggar's Heart" and Holly Near's "Hay Una Mujer Desapercida." There's no vocal percussion here, just singing and sweet harmonies that move you and touch your heart. A powerful, impressive collection of friends, and songs, from Maura O'Connell!

Songlist: The Bright Blue Rose, Mo Sheamuseen, Arrow, Some People's Lives, The Blacksmith, Ae Fond Kiss, Shipbuilding, Anach Cuain, I Know My Love, Weakness In Me, The Beggar's Heart, Maidin Im'bearra, Hay Una Mujer Desapercida

Various Artists : Irish Voices - The Best In Traditional Singing

Review: Irish traditional singing has made an important contribution to the popular repertoire as well as to folk tradition. Irish Voices brings together 17 brilliant vocal performances, some recent and some classics from the archive. Included are earlier singing styles such as "Sean-Nos," the still ornamented (but more accesible) styles of singers like Paddy Tunney, the group harmony singing of The McPeake Family of Belfast and such current musical hotshot groups as Patrick Street and Four Men And A Dog.

Voice Squad : Holly Wood

Review: The Voice Squad's album Holly Wood was largely recorded in the 1000-year-old St. Kevin's church in Hollywood in Co. Wicklow, whose acoustics give an extra special aura to the recording. The Voice Squad are an a cappella vocal group who sing songs in a very old, very traditional manner; unaccompanied. They are Phil Callery, Fran McPhail and Gerry Cullen and together their voices mix in the most beautiful way. Holly Wood includes songs such as 'I am Stretched on Your Grave', 'Jimmy Murphy', and 'The Brown and Yellow Ale', once a favourite of James Joyce. This album is for those who like traditional music in a different vein. Holly Wood is a perfect gift for Christmas for loved ones, or just for yourself.

Songlist: Coventry Carol, The Cocks are Crowing, The Sheepstealers, A Stor Mo Chroi, Jimmy Murphy, I am Stretched on your Grave, Good People All (Wexford Carol), The Brown and The Yellow Ale, Sarah Jane, Down in Yon Forest, A Fond Kiss, Annan Waters, The Parting Glass

Voice Squad : Many's The Foolish Youth

Review: When "Many's The Foolish Youth" was first released on vinyl in 1987, Fran Mc Phail, Gerry Cullen and Phil Callery were three well known traditional Irish singers but they had not yet named themselves The Voice Squad. They were singing songs which had long, if not ancient, histories. For example "The Bonny Irish Maid" was spread by ballad-sheet sellers all over Ireland and Britain in the last century. The "Kilmore Carol" was originally published in 1684. "The Holly She Bears A Berry" is an Easter carol which combines elements of paganism and older beliefs with Christianity. "When A Man's In Love" is a night-visiting song found all over Ireland and in the New World. These folk songs are sung by one of the most beautiful and memorable trio of voices you will ever hear.

Songlist: When a Man's in Love, The Bonny Irish Maid, Willie Taylor, The Banks of the Bann, The Holly She Bears a Berry, The Parting Glass, Kilmore Carol, Annan Water, Shepherds Arise, Ode to Autumn, Oh Good Ale

Alexander L'Estrange : Danny Boy and Other Classic Irish Melodies

Review: The Irish have long been famed for their powerful traditional melodies, and three in this volume are surely amongst the finest. 'Danny Boy' (the melody of which is also known as 'Londonderry Air') was first published, without a title, in 1855. The words most commonly associated with it were written by an Englishman who apparently never set foot in Ireland! 'The lark in the clear air' is an exquisite song celebrating the beauty of nature. The poignant words of 'The last rose of summer' match the song's mournful, drooping melody.

Carsten Gerlitz : The Celtic Choirbook

Review: Celtic music is enjoying a well-deserved revival. This revival may have been inspired by historical Hollywood epics, by popular dance acts such as "Riverdance", by Michael Flatley or purely by the emotional power of Celtic melodies. The songs all tell stories that have been passed down through successive generations, with more facets than any other kind of traditional music: some are melancholy dirges, some playful and lively dance tunes. This book brings together 20 of these traditional melodies in contemporary, modern arrangements for mixed chorus. In them you will find homophonic movements, sweeping melodic lines, vocal imitations of Celtic instruments and rousing rhythms. The irresistible charm of this music will leave no choral singer unmoved and is bound to find favour with audiences.

Songlist: Londonderry Air, Auld Lang Syne, Amazing Grace, Early One Morning, Lullaby, Dacw "Nghariad I Lawr Yn Y Berllan, Carrickfergus, Down By The Sally Gardens, Will Ye Go, Lassie, Go?, Whiskey In The Jar, An Irish Blessing, Riverdance, All Through The Night, Gin A Body, Believe Me, Scarbourough Fair, Greensleeves, The First Noel, Botany Bay, The Wild Rover
