Pust

Pust

Group.

PUST means breath in Norwegian. It also means to take a break, to get away, to breathe. You can hold it too, but that's not a very good idea when you're singing.

PUST is six skilled singers based in Oslo. The group's key qualities are versatility, creativity and "voiceplay" in addition to improvisation combined with a high level of musicianship. The singers are highly scholared and music-educated, with long experience from various vocal ensembles.

PUST finds inspiration somewhere between folksong, jazz and ethnic vocal music. Tradition and innovation are a part of the groups musical expression. All compositions and arrangements are written for or by the group.

Their first album Femkant was released September 2007. The album received great response from both Norwegian press and the audience with headlines as "vocal sensation" and "vocal charm and voiceplay from another world". Femkant was nominated by Contemporary A cappella Recording Awards (CARA) for best a cappella Jazz Album 2007. It was also nominated for a Norwegian Grammy Award 2007 (Spellemannprisen).

Their second album Kry was launched September 2009. The album includes songs composed by members of the group, and all the lyrics are in Norwegian. The album has received a lot of great reviews in Norwegian press. Kry is nominated in 4 categories by Comtemporary A Cappella Recording Awards 2010 (CARA). Both albums have received great review with high scores from The Recorded A Cappella Review Board.

In 2009 PUST has performed together with Bobby McFerrin in Oslo Concert Hall. In October the group shared stage with The Manhattan Transfer at Vocal Jazz Summit in Mainz, and in November they shared stage with Club for Five (Finland) at the Voice Mania festival in Vienna.

PUST was the 1st prize winner of the international contest for vocal groups at the Tampere Vocal Music Festival 2005 in Finland. In hard competition with groups from all over Europe, the jury claimed that PUST with their individuality, charm and high musical level constructs something new in their genre. The Real Group invited PUST to perform at The Real A Cappella Festival in September 2008.

Review: "Femkant," Norwegian mixed-voice septet (four women, three men) Pust's debut album, was released in September, 2007, and it immediately attracted a lot of positive attention. The Norwegian press hailed it as a "vocal sensation," and called it "vocal charm and voiceplay from another world." The album was nominated for a 2007 Norwegian Grammy Award, and it was also nominated for a CARA Award for best 2007 a cappella jazz album. These 14 a cappella songs include some excellent covers, a delicate "Time After Time," a whimsical "I Won't Grow Up" from Disney's "Peter Pan," a soaring "Innocent," a playful, jazzy "Dat Dere," a poignant, bluesy "Moon Over Bourbon Street" and a powerful, bluenote "Take a Look in the Mirror." All other songs are in Norwegian, such as the heartbreaking "Vaggviselat," haunting "Turlutte 33," playful "Femkantgeneralen" and teasing, scattish "Helene Harefroken." All arrangements are written by or for the group. A very impressive debut, "Femkant" is a breath of fresh jazzy air from Norway!
