Review: The Stockholm Singing Classes, now known as the Adolf Fredrik Music Classes, were started in Sweden in 1939 by Hugo Hammarstrom to give vocally talented children a chance to develop their talent free of charge. This idea remains the same today, for 1,000 pupils aged 11-16. There are two official choirs, the Boy's Choir and the 46-strong Girl's Choir, which was founded in 1971 by Bo Johansson, and for many years it has been ranked as one of the foremost in the world. Included on 'Cantemus 2' are 14 little-known choral pieces from the Int. Federation for Choral Music, all sung in their original languages, of which there are 10 in this recording. Samuel Barber's 'To Be Sung On The Water,' Michael Head's 'Ave Maria,' Andre Caplet's 'Sanctus,' Ro Ogura's 'Hotaru Koi,' Lajos Bardos' 'Magos A Rutafa,' Egil Hovland's 'O Come, Let Us Sing,' and Javi Busto's 'Salve Regina' are particularly lovely. The sweet, soaring voices of the Choir shine on some excellent little-known music!

The lyrics from Stephen Hatfield's latest commission for the Amabile Young Women's Ensemble, Ripple Effect, state: 'Dip your fingers in the water and the rings will spread to who knows how far away. Beyond what you see, beyond what you hear, beyond what you hope. We are sending out Amabile. Dip your fingers in the water. Send your voices into the air.'

Review: 'A Bella Christmas: Angels are Singing' is an aptly-named, live, gorgeous Christmas collection from the pride of Rochester, Minnesota. Yon's sublime 'Gesu Bambino,' the traditional song 'Cantemos a Maria' (Let Us Sing to Mary); Egil Hovland's 'Stay With Us' and the traditional carol 'Silent Night.' Review: Conductor Elaine Quilichini leads her talented singers in a lightly accompanied, spirited Christmas collection. The selection of 20 songs begins with the 8-parts of Derek Holman's eclectic masterpiece, 'Sir Christemas,' and continues in the same vein with David Willcocks' dissonant 'Psalm 150,' Eric Thiman's dreamy 'Spindrift,' a pair by Bach, 'Wir eilen mit schwachen' and 'Domine Deus,' a moody pair by Imant Raminsh, 'Psalm 23' and 'Vestigia,' and the moving 'Bashana Habah'ah' by Nurit Hirsh. Tuikkikaa, Oi Joulun Tahtoset
Review: There is a distinctly female point of view on this record - and no wonder. Aino Loppela has built a repertoire in which the dimensions of Finnish Christmas become thoroughly illuminated. Mysterious silence at the dusk of Christmas Eve, anticipation, presents and many other things fill up a little girl's mind. The protagonist is, however, Maria Matala Neiti, Pyha Herran Piikanen (Mary the Humble Maiden, sacred Lord's Servant), whose experience about the deepest message of Christmas is performed here. The Campanella Female Choir is among the elite of Finnish choirs of female voices and and winners of numerous awards.
Songlist: Piika Pikkarainen, Jouluna Jumala Syntyi, Maria Matala Neiti, Syntyi Poika Polvillehen, Harka Olkia Levitti, Otabat Piti Iloa, De Radice Processerat, Angelus Emittitur, Psallat Scholarum Concio, Maria, Herran Piikanen, Aa, Aa, Jo Lapsi Nukahtaa, Kun Joulu Valkeneepi, Kautta Tyynen, Vienon Yon, Joulun Odotukesessa, Talvi-Iltana, Pimeaa, Lasten Joulu, Joulu Tullut On, Jouluaattona, Joululumi, Joululaulu, Hiljainen Joululaulu, Joulun Kellot, Tule Takkaus Ihmisrintaan, Tuikkikaa, Oi Joulun Tahtoset, Betlehemin Tahti

Some of our favorites are 'Look to this Day,' 'La Regata,' 'O Won't You Sit Down?,' 'Goin' Up-a-Yonder;' 'Pretty Little Horses,' 'And So It Goes,' 'Miss You Nights' and 'The Rose.' Review: Michael Neaum's arrangements number over 150. His work is lauded by choirs for being singable. He brings out the color and flavor found with in the conventional harmonic idiom and adds unexpected nuances. In addition to arranging, he is the accompanist for Cantamus. On this recording the world renowned girls' chorus sings Neaum's accompanied and a cappella arrangements of folk songs, spirituals, madrigals, Victorian songs and popular ballads from the twentieth century. Neaum's arrangements are wonderfully sung by this exceptional chorus.

Review: Founder Pamela Cook directs Cantamus, based in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, UK, her 40 hand picked singers, girls age 13 to 19, in a generous, finely-crafted Christmas collection of 19 songs. Just a quick listen to John Rutter's 'Tomorrow Shall Be My Dancing Day,' and accompanist Michael Neaum's arrangements of 'The Little Drummer Boy' and 'Do You Hear What I Hear,' and we know what a treat 'Noel' is going to be! Mostly accompanied by piano, flute and other instruments, there are few sounds as joyous and welcoming at Christmas than these soaring, spirited young voices singing favorites like 'Patapan,' 'Stille Nacht,' 'White Christmas,' 'Riu, Riu Chiu' and 'Away in a Manger;' and lesser-known tunes like 'I Sing of a Maiden,' 'Lullay Myn Lyking,' 'Midwinter' and 'Pastorcito Santo.' Review: Hungarian master composer Lajos Bardos (1899-1987) was an outstanding figure of the prominent generation of students of Kodaly and Bartok who, inspired by their ideas, did much for Hungarian musical culture. As with Kodaly and Bartok, after becoming a master, Bardos taught generations coming after him and was an active choral conductor (for the Cecilia Chorus, the Budapest Chorus and others) for decades. His work as a composer is represented on this disc by a selection of choruses for children's and female voices. Denes Szabo directs the Cantemus Children's Choir and Pro Musica in these 27 lively choral works: 'Cantemus!,' 'On Sunny Roads,' 'Awake You, Youth,' 'Blow the Pipe,' 'Three Choruses for Children,' the dramatic 'Recruiting Song of the Hussars,' 'Breeze,' 'Hey, Put It Right!,' the 2-part 'The Bride,' 'To Ferenc Liszt,' 'In Memory of Bartok,' 'Summer-Sunday,' 'Gold-Winged Angel,' and the sacred songs 'Ave Maris Stella,' 'Ave Maria' and 'The Blessed Virgin Mary.' There is piano accompaniment on a few tunes. The high, bright voices of the children go perfectly with this material by a man whose life and work remain a gift to Hungary and to the world.
Songlist: Cantemus!, On Sunny Roads, Awake You, Youth!, Fairy Song, Blow the Pipe, Kutamen - Three Choruses for Children, Recruiting Song of the Hussars, Breeze, Hey, Put It Right!, Rika, Rika, High is the Rue Tree, The Bride, Tavunga, To Ferenc Liszt, In Memory of Bartok, A Tale of Miracle, Summer - Sunday, St. Cecilia, Gold - Winged Angel, Ave Maris Stella, Ave Maria, The Blessed Virgin Mary

Review: In a nation as passionate about choral music as Estonia where excellent choral groups abound it is a real accomplishment for a choir to be considered one of the best but that is the lofty status of the Ellerhein Girls' Choir. This Grammy award winning choir was featured in the highly acclaimed movie 'The Singing Revolution' where the ensemble is filmed in rehearsal along with exrtended interviews with the choir director Tiia Este-Loitme. For fans of girls choirs or directors looking for interesting repertoire this recording is a must have.

Review: Den bla anemone, by the Klarup Girls Choir, features a mix of a cappella and accompanied songs and arrangements by the Danish composer John Hoybye. A lecturer in conducting and composition, Hoybye is a proponent of choral singing for the development of children. The songs on this CD range from popular Danish tunes to newly composed melodies. In common, they all have more modern harmonies. In addition, they have been chosen to reflect the four seasons. These songs are beautifully sung by this celebrated group.

Review: Pike Kor, whose name honors the Norwegian heritage of the college, was established at Luther in 1981. It is comprised of 100 first-year women, selected each fall by audition, who perform a primarily sacred repertoire with a wide range of works composed for women's voices. Directed by Sandra Peter the choir continues the tradition of one of the nation's finest female choirs. This CD, their first, includes several new works by Libby Larsen, including 'Natus est Emmanuel,' commissioned for 'Christmas at Luther College', and 'A Young Nun, Singing' premiered by Pike Kor in 2005. Convent motets by Sulpitia Cesis and pieces by Edie Hill, Gwyneth Walker and Eleanor Daley are also featured. Much of the repertoire Pike Kor has performed in recent years has either been composed by women, set to texts by women, or centers around themes related to women. A highly recommended recording

Review: Over 100 members of the Girlchoir, directed by Rebecca Rottsolk, bring together this concert of songs and simple, elegant texts that celebrate the resiliency of the human spirit against great adversity. The essence of the CD comes from the first song, the words taken from a cellar wall where Jews were hiding from the Nazis in WWII: 'I believe in the sun even when it is not shining and I believe in God even when God is silent.' There are 3 songs from 'I Never Saw Another Butterfly,' a musical memorial to the 15,000 children who passed through the town of Teresienstadt on their way to Auschwitz. 14 songs, all lightly accompanied, that touch the heart from these talented young voices!
Songlist: Inscription of Hope, Nigra Sum, Adonai Ro'i, The Butterfly, On A Sunny Evening, Birdsong, Bashana Haba'Ah, Hava Nagila, Sure on this Shining Night, Precious Lord, Take My Hand, Hymn To Freedom, African Celebration, I'm Going Up Yonder, Light One Candle
Review: Now entering its third decade, ably led by Co-Conductors Roberta Q. Jackson and Debra R. Burgess, the award-winning PSG is taking its place among the finest children's choral ensembles in the country. Over 1,000 young women ages 5 to 18, who love to sing, have come together through the years to create the distinct voice of the Portland Symphonic Girlchoir, and the 100+-strong ensemble joins the 33-strong, '20th Anniversary Alums & Mums Choir' for 17 piano-accompanied, selected live cuts, recorded from 2008 to 2010. Favorites are a pair by Duke Ellington,' 'It Don't Mean A Thing' and 'Mood Indigo,' Charles Collins' 'Mary Had A Little Blues,' Bill Perison's 'Naughty Four O'Clocks,' 'Gershwin for Girls,' Moses Hogan's 'Ride On, King Jesus,' Charles Collins' 'The Star,' Stephen Hatfield's 'Living In a Holy City,' 'Deep Peace, a Gaelic Blessing' and David Brunner's 'A Song to End All Wars.' We love the sweet, spirited sound of the Portland Symphonic Girlchoir, one of the best in the world!

Review: Roberta Q. Jackson directs the over 100 strong PSG, accompanied by the Portland Youth Philharmonic. This is a Christmas CD, and there are 21 songs in celebration of Christmas, from sacred (Galuppi's 'Dixit Dominus (Psalm 110) Movements, I, II, II') to pop (Elliot's 'Jingle Bell Swing'). There are actually 2 choirs here, the Premier Choir of over 100 voices, and the Debut Choir of about 90, and when they sing together on something like 'Silver Bells,' it's pretty impressive. An excellent Christmas CD, for yourself to enjoy every Christmas, or to give to a loved one.
Songlist: Shepherd's Pipe Carol, Cantique de Jean Racine, Dixit Dominus, Children Blessed of the Lord, This Little Babe, Chose Something Like a Star, Ding Dong Merrily on High, el Desembre Congelat, Il Est Ne, Angels We Have Heard on High, Hope for Resolution, Donkey Carol, Hine Ma Tov, Sleigh Ride, Jingle Bell Swing, I'll Be HOme For Christmas, Heavenly Aeroplane, Winter Wonderland, The Christmas Song, Silver Bells, O Holy Night
Review: Co-Conductors Roberta Q. Jackson and Debra R. Burgess have led the 168-strong PSG to its current status as one of the finest children's choirs in the US, widely acclaimed by composers, conductors and audiences. Composed of five ensembles, all of whom benefit from Jackson and Burgess' unique collaborative approach to artistry and teaching; the PSG was awarded the prestigious ASCAP/Chorus America Award for Adventurous Programming, and the conductors continue to commission new works for PSG ensembles each season. They also created 'Music in the Making,' an annual Girlchoir event, hosting guest composers, conductors and area school and community choirs. 'Stars' is a wonderful collection of 19 lightly accompanied live performances from 2005-2007 by the 5 ensembles, individually and combined. Some favorites are the soaring, dramatic 'Kayama & Ademus' (from Songs of Sanctuary by Karl Jenkins), the Stephen Hatfield-commissioned a cappella spiritual 'First to Know,' Bob Chilcott's 'Benedictus' (from A Little Jazz Mass), Lee Kesselman's 'Hwayana yaMwari' (Agnus Dei from Shona Mass), Eleanor Dale's 'The Lake Isle of Innisfree,' Mozart's 'Papageno, Papagena Duet' (from the Magic Flute), Irving Berlin's 'I Love a Piano,' the lovely folk song 'Away From the Roll of the Sea,' James Rankin's 'Fare Thee Well, Love' and the final cut, Keith Hampton's 'Praise His Holy Name.' From beginning to end, the aptly named 'Stars that sing...' is a beautiful recording that touches and moves us!
Songlist: Kayama &Adiemus, Song of the Stars, First to Know, Sanctus, Benedictus, Hwayana yaMwari, Einini, Castle of Dromore, The Lake Isle of Innisfree, Who But I?, Papageno, Papagena Duet, Hopi, Hop, Une Poule Blanche, I Love A Piano, Bye Bye Blackbird, Away From the Roll of the Sea, Camino Caminante, Fare Thee Well, Love, Praise His Holy Name
Review: This live 2-CD set features the four Girlchoirs, the Premier Choir, Intermezzo Choir, Debut Choir and Encore Singers in 24 pieces on the first CD, and 14 on the 2nd CD. All pieces are accompanied, by piano, organ, percussion, string quartet and by other instruments. Ably conducted by Roberta Jackson and Debra Burgess, The last 7 selections on the first CD are a 'best of' from the Girlchoir's founding in 1989 to 2004 and include a pair of commissioned songs, 'Deep Peace, A Gaelic Blessing' and 'Spero' (Hope), both written by PSG alumnus Amy C. Burgess. 7 of the pieces on the first CD are sacred Christian pieces, such as Bach's 'Christe Eleison from Mass in B Minor' and Rupert Long's 'Sanctus from Mass For Many Nations.' The Moses-Hogan arranged spiritual 'Ride on King Jesus' and his 'Music Down In My Soul,' Steven Hatfield's 'Over the Hills,' Gwenyth Walker's 'How Can I Keep From Singing' and Lee Kesselman's commission, 'Tsvey Taybelekh' (The Two Doves), are particularly fine. Also fine are four movements from Benjamin Britten's 'The Little Sweep' from 'Lets Make an Opera.' A generous, finely-crafted collection from the talented Portland Symphonic Girlchoir.

Review: The music on this two disc set is some of the greatest sacred and secular repertoire ever written for treble voices, selected to showcase the talents of the young members of the San Francisco Girls Chorus. The first disc, 'Heaven,' contains sacred music both accompanied and a cappella. Two of our favorites are mini-masterworks, Benjamin Britten's lovely 'Missa Brevis in D,' for voices and organ, and Francis Poulenc's mysterious 'Litanies a la vierge noire.' Disc II, 'Earth,' focuses on secular music to capture human qualities such as sorrow, joy, humor and hope. The centerpieces of the disc are three new commissions by Gabriela Lena Frank, Augusta Read Thomas and Dwight Nakamura. Frank's beautiful settings of two Peruvian poems, Thomas' elegant use of E.E. Cummings' poetry and Nakamura's jazzy take on Irving Berlin's 'Blue Skies' are all very special. Conductor Susan McMane directs this renowned chorus in 24 beautiful tunes. A wonderfully packaged set with extensive liner notes would make a memorable, timeless holiday gift to your family and to others on your list!
Songlist: Psalm 150, Ave Verum, Missa Brevis In D, Toccata from Suite Pour L'orgue, Glory to God for This Transient Life, Litanies a la virge noire, Ave Maria, Ave Verum Corpus, Ave Maria, Ave Maria, I Dream a World, I Cannot Dance O Lord, The Water of Tyne, Two Mountain Songs, Two E.E. Cummings Songs, I Got Rhythm, National Weather Forcast, Blue Skies, Over the Rainbow

Review: Beginning in 2004 with their desire to record 'Anne Frank, A Living Voice,' written for Chorissima's 25th Anniversary, 'Voices' is the result of their search for work by women writers like Frank, who were longing for change in their situations. Joan Szymko's powerful 'Vivos Voco' and 'Nada Te Turbe' (with text by St. Teresa of Avila (1515-82), 'A Hope Carol,' and 'Echo,' which feature wonderful poems by Christina Rossetti (1830-94), and 'I Shall Keep Singing,' with text by Emily Dickinson, are fine examples. Libby Larsen's 'The Womanly Song of God' and 'Sing Me to Heaven,' with text by Jane Griner, lead us into the lovely, haunting 7-part 'Anne Frank, A Living Voice,' which touches and moves us on many levels. 'Hebrew Rounds for Peace' is an apt choice for the final tune. Light accompaniment throughout, and extensive, colorful liner notes. 'Voices' is another beautiful, powerful, well-chosen collection by Susan McMane's talented San Francisco Girls Chorus.
Songlist: Vivios Voco, A Hope Carol, Echo, Nada Te Turbe , I Shall Keep Singing , The Womanly Song Of God, Sing Me To Heaven, Anne Frank: A Living Voice, Hebrew Rounds For Peace

Review: 'Cantate 2000' is the third CD done by the SGC with Jackson Berkey, a talented composer and pianist, who also contributed beautiful digital photography and art direction to the stunning liner notes. There are 11 songs in three groupings, 'Cantate 2000,' 'Prime Voci A Cappella' (the two unaccompanied songs on the CD), and 'Voices From the Earth.' All are impressive on many levels. The two very interesting written pieces in the liner notes by Berkey and Wright add to our appreciation for the music.

Review: Composer Jackson Berkey was in San Antonio in 1993 at the National Convention for the American Choral Directors Association when he was blown away by the sound of the Seattle Girls' Choir. He was inspired to create a treble arrangement for one of his new pieces, 'God Be In My Head,' sent it to director Jerome Wright, and a beautiful relationship began. 'God Be In My Head' is the only a cappella tune on the CD, the other 14 are beautifully accompanied by a variety of instruments, from harp and piano to string orchestra, handbells, synthesizer and whip snap. Included are 2 excellent suites by Berkey, 'South Dakota Shadows Suite,' 4 songs; and 'Thoughts and Remembrances,' also 4 songs. The girls in the chorus (25 are listed in the liner notes, but over 60 on their first CD) are indeed cause for Mr. Berkey's enthusiasm–this is CD is beautiful and impressive. The liner notes are first class and extensive.

Review: Seattle is well-known for the vibrancy of its homegrown music. Seattle Girls' Choir's newest CD, 'Mosaic' adds to the richness of the region's musical heritage. 'Mosaic' blends sacred and secular pieces sung in the soaring treble choral style for which the choir is famous. The CD has been released in honor of the 25th anniversary of the Seattle Girls' Choir. 'Mosaic' is a compilation of the choir's all-time favorite classical vocal music that has been sung on tours and at music festivals spanning the United States to some of the great cathedrals of Europe. Some great sacred pieces included are 'Rise Up, My Love, My Fair One,' 'The Song of Solomon,' and the always stirring double choir 'Ave Maria,' by Gustav Holst. Memorable secular pieces included are 'Vier Gesange' by Brahms and Randall Thompson's moving 'Choose Something Like a Star.' Also, another fine recording included is Jackson Berkey's 'Nunc Dimittis.' Berkey's outstanding treble music served as the inspiration for two previous Seattle Girls' Choir CDs. This is an excellent collection of music, for anyone who appreciates beautiful treble choir music!
