In a genre that has been split along gender lines for most of a century, who'd have expected mixed barbershop to be successful? Well, whoever didn't, should have. The great thing about mixed barbershop quartets is that they combine the best of the single-gender groups, and build on them. Mixed barbershop is on its way - you'll definitely want to get on the train now!

Dance With A Dolly I've Got A Crush on You I'll Be Home for Christmas It's Only A Paper Moon Mood Indigo Embraceable You After You've Gone Auld Lang Syne Let's Call the Whole Thing Off Anchors Away / Don't Sit Under the Apple Tree |
Easy Lis'nin' is dressed to the nines, 1944 style, on the cover of this, the Denver-based mixed (2 married couples, the Jamisons and the Coffins) barbershop-type quartet's first CD. There are 10 40s jukebox-style hits here: "Dance With A Dolly," "I've Got A Crush On You," "I'll Be Home For Christmas," "It's Only A Paper Moon," "Mood Indigo," "Embraceable You," "After You've Gone," "Auld Lang Syne," "Let's Call The Whole Thing Off" and "Anchors Aweigh/Don't Sit Under The Apple Tree" medley. All arrangements are by baritone Steve Jamison. We like the full, rich, professional sound--the liner notes are sparse and don't tell us much about the singers, but they are clearly pros. It's like a SPEBSQSA/Sweet Adelines get together to sing some classic 40s music.

| This Is the Day My Blue Heaven Glorify Thy Name It's A Pity To Say Goodnight Chances Are Have You Got Any Castles, Baby? Where Is Love? No More Sorrow The Glory of Love As We Sail to Heaven's Shore I Don't Know Why (I Just Do) Nobody Knows What A Redhead Mama Can Do Love Letters Straight From Your Heart Send Your Love Amazing Grace Goodbye World |
When two couples have gotten to know each other through church, barbershop singing, parenting children of similar ages, and being partners in business it is not a huge stretch of the imagination to find them creating a group which uses those musical elements of their common lives. These 'Kindred Spirits' share their life long love of singing with both religious and secular offerings. The arrangements take elements from hymns, a lot of swing and jazz standards and embellish them with the tight harmonies and chording learned with much barbershop experience to craft a joyous recording. Part of the delight of this original mix strikes one when you realize that, for just one example, "My Blue Heaven" isn't a religious tune and yet, well... it could be! You'll become a small 'k' kindred spirit too!

| I'm Beginning to See the Light Two Sleepy People Dream A Little Dream Of Me I'll Never Find Another You So Wrong 59th Street Bridge Song (Feelin' Groovy) Here's That Rainy Day Silly Songs Medley I Fall In Love With You Every Day Somebody Loves Me More Than You Know A World Of Our Own If I knew Then (What I Know Now) The Red Corvette Looking Through Your Eyes Gospel Medley |
It was a fortuitous meeting that brought these two men and two women singers together, who have very diverse interests and careers, but share a common joy in singing a cappella music. All four are accomplished barbershop singers, and as Rendezvous they have developed a style that is truly their own--a fresh, vibrant, energetic sound. This is their first CD, 16 songs ranging from jazz, pop, swing, and folk to gospel: "I'm Beginning to See the Light," "Two Sleepy People," Simon & Garfunkle's "59th Street Bridge Song," "So Wrong," "Somebody Loves Me," "A World of Our Own," the very funny "The Red Corvette" and finishing with the beautiful "Gospel Medley." There's a particularly fun "Silly Songs Medley" from the Swing era, and "Somebody Loves Me" is done as the original Gershwin song from 1924, then as the Four Freshmen's jazz version. Beautiful harmonies, good humor, strong arrangementsÑit adds up to an excellent first CD for Rendezvous!

| Sound Celebration Basin Street Blues Home on the Range Anytime I Can Dream, Can't I Lullabye in Ragtime You Needed Me The Glory of Love I Wish You Love In the Still of the Night Summertime What a Wonderful World Gospel Medley |
The two men and two women of Binghamton, NY-based Sound Celebration are members of the Mixed Harmony Barbershop Quartet Association and have been ringing chords for three and a half years. Besides barbershop, their repertoire includes country, blues, folk, spiritual, modern harmonies and doo-wop. A highlight of 2002 was a second-place finish in the Buckeye Invitational Mixed Quartet Contest in Columbus, Ohio, and in 2003 they won it all! In this, SC's first CD we hear 13 great barbershop tunes: the title tune, "Basin Street Blues, "Home on the Range," "Anytime," "I Can Dream, Can't I?," "Lullabye in Ragtime," "You Needed Me," "The Glory of Love," "I Wish You Love," "In The Still of the Night," the Gershwins' classic "Summertime," "What A Wonderful World" and "Gospel Medley." We like the whole idea of mixed barbershop groups and competitions, and SC is one of the great ones, singing with spirit and joy in the music; bending and ringing a barbershop chord with the best of them!

These two CD's are the fruit of seven married couples, all of whom are members of SPEBSQSA and Sweet Adelines International. The ensemble includes Pat Rygg and Connie Miller of 4 Star Collection. However, though some vestiges of barbershop arrangement remain, most of the selections are show, Broadway or inspirational songs. Not exclusively a cappella, three of the tracks on "Ladies and Gentlemen," and four on "Because We're Friends," are accompanied in the easy listening style. Backing tracks notwithstanding, these fourteen voices have many years of part-singing experience between them, and their tuning, blend and expression are manifestly eloquent. Mixed groups have no officially sanctioned competitions at International as of yet, but can be seen competing at other barbershop events, such as Buckeye. Could be the start of something big!
