Veni, Redemptor Gencium SATB a cappella |
The New Oxford Book of Carols (1992) was born of the need for a practical collection presenting carols either in their original versions (where such a concept was relevant) or in versions that respected the essential character of the melodies and their texts. The original 700-page book, which contains alternative versions of many carols, also offers an extensive historical introduction and notes to individual carols, from which the information below is summarized. The word "carol" has had a variety of meanings, starting as a dance-song in the Middle Ages. Carols are now almost exclusively associated with Christmas, and their subject-matter is either midwinter cheer, or the conception and birth of Christ. While modern secular practice is to sing them before Christmas, they formerly belonged to the period between Christmas eve and Epiphany. Our own criteria for selecting carols re that the content must be narrative, contemplative or celebratory, the spirit simple, the form normally strophic.

The Cornish folk tune 'The Holy Bears a Berry,' alternates between men and women's voices. Solo sections may be sung by small groups. This arrangement is best for church, community, or school choirs. 'Ding Dong! Merrily on High' is a vigorous 8 part a cappella piece with constant vocal imitation of bells. Elaborate counterpoint and canonic devices. Completely diatonic, harmonically and melodically conservative. Rhythmic ostinatos give non-stop energy leading to dazzling finish. 'Gloria in Excelsis Deo' begins and ends with a rhythmic and exciting statement of the Gloria text. The middle section is tranquil and effectively emotes the feeling of peace that is being presented in the text. The final statement is one of peace. Challenging, but well worth the work. Van's arrangement of 'Once in Royal David's City.' is an introspective and reflective setting of this Christmas standard. The composer includes many of the elements that have become associated with this hymn. This arrangement begins with either a treble solo, or with all sopranos, it then broadens into a rich setting of the following stanzas, and ends with a hushed treatment of the text “And our eyes at last shall see him.” May be used in worship or concerts. 'Angels We have Heard on High' is a beautiful and energetic arrangement that is appropriate for both worship and concert use. The piece is written in a unique way that incorporates vocal accompaniments that are shared between men's and women's voices. Includes soaring descants throughout. Composed in the Australian winter of 2005, 'Ave Maria' was written by Jacobs in response to the death of a close friend’s mother. Her passion for Renaissance music influenced many aspects of the piece, particularly text, and the decision to set it for two a cappella choirs.

What'cha Gonna Bring For Christmas? - arr. Andy Beck |
Develop your choir's a cappella skills with "Alleluia Madrigal", a straightforward original madrigal by Donald Moore. Traditional harmonies, modest ranges, and lots of repetition make it a quick-learn piece. Contrasting dynamics and a lilting three-four meter create a joyful song that is good for Christmas or general use. "What'cha Gonna Bring For Christmas?" - Feature your best solo crooner(s) on this ’50s inspired a cappella chorus that begs Santa for a timeless teen wish: “Won’t you bring me someone to love?” The choir serves equally as the featured act (of the chorus and bridge) and the backup singers (for two dreamy verses). The final falsetto phrases and 7th chord cadence deliver a sweet doo-wop ending. "Christmas Eve Is Here" - A fresh approach to this early French carol. Polyphony resounds as sections of the choir perform unique and overlapping lines in a minor mode. Performance options include any combination of a cappella choir, handbells or tonechimes, piano, hand drum, and tambourine. Impressive. "Come, See The Baby" is a new, original Christmas spiritual by Jay Althouse. This full-sounding work features much three-part singing over a solid, traditional bass part, as well as an echo section between the women and the men. Sudden dynamic changes are powerful and effective (and simple to sing).

Lots of optional notes and is an outstanding learning piece for young and developing choirs. "A Merry Madrigal" - A "fa la la" section in this joyful number makes it appropriate for both Christmas and general use. It's a fine learning piece in the madrigal style, yet the singable melodies make the independent vocal lines easy to learn. Don Moore is a master at creating works that develop choral singing, teach a classic choral style and, most importantly, sound great. Use it in concerts and at festivals and adjudications.

'Christmas Madrigal Roundezvous' is a sparkling, festive, and extremely clever original madrigal, sung in a round, with a contrasting, lilting middle section. The uplifting lyrics of 'A Festive Madrigal' begin that bright, jovial original madrigal, which 'sings in' the holiday season. A marvelous, accessible choice which also works well for smaller ensembles. The refreshing, new, secular Christmas madrigal 'Come, Sing! Come, Dance!' will definitely capture the spirit of the season. Designed for small or large groups, this a cappella gem is easy and accessible, yet sophisticated and challenging. Delightfully creative and absolutely charming!

He Is Born (Arr. Scott, K. Lee) |
'He is Born' is fun to sing, with varied textures and has a great variety of compositional techniques. 'My Dancing Day' is a popular old English text and carol, perfect for High school choir Christmas concerts or church choir. It has a variety of contrasts and vocal colors. 'O Holy Child' is a lovely, original carol with lilting "Alleluia" refrains and contrasting introspective verses. Thought provoking textual imagery. Basically two musical ideas (refrain and verse) repeated several times. It is koyful to learn, rewarding to perform and requires flexibility and sensitivity from the singers. 'This Night Did God Become a Child' is a 3-stanza homophonic setting with syncopated "Alleluias" and antiphonal-echo effects. In 'There Is No rose of Such Virtue,' arching melodic line and warm harmonies join hands in the elegantly simple setting for the Christmas season. Laubengayer's arrangement of 'Silent Night' has the traditional text set to a new tune.

O Sapientia |
Composed for the Reykjavik Cathedral Choir's "Solo Dei Gloria" Festival in 2004, Advent Antiphons is an exquisite concert setting of the Great O Antiphons. Traditionally chanted or sung between 17 and 23 December, the Antiphons comprise seven brief prayers which proceed in sequence, charting events from before Creation through to the birth of Christ. The powerful sentiments conveyed in these texts are brought to the fore in Chilcott's masterful writing for double choir; he embroiders a beautifully textured work in which echoes of plainchant combine with richly expressive harmony. In the third and fifth movements, the composer instructs the individual sopranos and altos in each choir to sing their parts in their own rhythm, to entrancing effect. Without doubt, this is some of Chilcott's finest music to date; subtle yet potent, haunting, and uplifting.

Gabriel's Message |
Gabriel's Message is an 8-part divisi (the beginning splits into 16 parts!) triumphant Christmas Chart. 'Jingle Bells' features a fun vocal accompaniment with great opportunities for soloists. 'I Wonder As I Wander' is a sweet carol with beautiful vocal textures. In this arrangement of 'Go Tell It On The Mountain' the composer focuses on the text, bringing out the meaning of the song, which is often not understood. The 'Twenty Christmas Canons' are easily accessible as they can be performed by all voice types and in any key.
